Really enjoyed that. New to welding and it's cool to see someone thinking out of the box, using components that are just lying around, etc. While you could simply weld on a clamp as others have said, this was much more interesting and will surely spark more ideas.

People who write "waste of time" and "why not buy a full product or weld a clamp" miss the point of the vid completely. The guy made this mainly because it's great practice for both logic and craftsmanship. This project improved his skill and he probably had a lot of fun doing it. Besides, he showed the people multiple PRINCIPLES of how to think when making something. The video is educational.

So true...... I believe they people that complain or whatever have no idea what the point is. I build a lot if my tools now and it's the satisfaction you get from doing it yourself and yes you get better and better each time. True people who see and appreciate it are at times amazed because we make it better,stronger, etc... great job.

Actually I would argue that the video encourages some very dangerous practices like grinding on the side of a wheel. Very dangerous and recommended never. Sharpening a bit using the side of a dremel cutoff wheel??? This guy gets thrown out of my shop.

I made a tool like this 30 yrs. ago when I was working for La Victoria Foods. We use to do a lot of cutting metals and pipes on top of the roof so I made this as a portable vise to hold the material while using a hacksaw.

Another approach: replace the adjustment screw in the vise-grip with a longer one (same-same, but more thread); along the exposed threads, install two nuts, with provision for small, finger-tightenable set-screw(s); build out the clamp halves from those nuts … It probably won't matter which way the C-clamp is oriented (it's reversible, anyway); this arrangement makes a C-clamp that is _itself_ adjustable.
@michaelthibault7930
@michaelthibault7930 5 жыл бұрын
It occurs to me that set-screws in the nuts may not be necessary. If the lash of the nuts on the thread of the longer adjustment screw thread, measured as angular free movement of the nut perpendicular to the nut's axis, approaches 0° (zero), then the tightening of the business end of the C-clamp will cause the two nuts to go off-axis, in opposite directions, causing the internal and external threads to bind -- possibly dramatically -- , obviating the need for the set-screws. IOW, the orientation and position of the vise-grip _may_ be set (locked) by the act of tightening the C-clamp to the anchor point. This would introduce a degree of freedom to the vise-grip -- up to 180° -- in a very simple manner. However, the friction at the tip of the adjustment screw, inside the vise-grip, becomes relevant in this arrangement. I doubt that it would be easy to turn the screw once the tool is adjusted for a reasonable grip. Put another way, once the vise-grip jaws are locked onto an object, the adjustment screw can't be turned. The locking mechanism of the vise-grip removes all axial lash on the threads, raising the friction to the point where it can't easily be overcome. Depending, conflating one of the add-on nuts with the internal thread on the vise-grip ( i.e. adding only one nut to the longer thread of the adjustment screw, and building the C-clamp out from that _and_ from the vise-grip's body) would, I think, guarantee that the C-clamp adjustment would secure the whole tool to the anchor point. However, doing so forces the vise-grip to always have the same orientation to the anchor point. In order to simultaneously provide anchorage _and_ the ability to re-orient the vise-grip arbitrarily relative to the anchor point, you'd need to go with two nuts on the threads of the suggested longer adjustment screw.

Slip a tube sleeve or angle iron over threads that are near the arc. It keeps off the splatter. Avoid using the side of a stone grinding wheel, especially on items that hammer against the spinning wheel. Stone wheels can fly apart.

Some comments were to simply use a C-clamp but a C-clamp could never hold rounded objects such as the drill or Dremel. Great idea. Remember to be sure your grinding wheel is designed to allow grinding on the face. Most are not and it could explode as some mentioned earlier. Be safe.

This idea is worthy of having a patent issued. You could make it a finished product. I'd buy one. there's plenty of small vises on the market but none to hold round objects this securely. i guess I'll be grinding down a c clamp to mate to a vise grip and welding them together. great idea thanks for sharing.

Uses caliper for scribe, grinds on side of wheel.Not hard to spot untrained shade tree. Drill (bit) needs to be in a steady rest in order to get same degree on both flutes. Sharpening drills this way is ok for thin sheet metal but for thicker steel will cause hole to be out of round .

A bench grinder wheel isn't made to take side forces. If you make a habit of putting impact loads from the side, like rounding off squares and hexes, you might crack a wheel once a decade. It's WAY to exciting to do it that often.
