Real quick: Before I respond to comments a lot of you are disappointed that I didn’t react to the other videos surrounding black swan before this one and have mentioned that this is about “if” they lose their passion for music rather than “did”. 1. I didn’t know there was a video before this one..and to be honest there’s lots of videos that go with each song so please just bare with me. If I react out of order and I have no idea then I will react to the other ones and connect them to my best ability. 2. Yeah I guess i missed the ball on the Music thing. I tried lol I’m not like this perfect person that can understand everything at once and I had no idea about the first dance quote so that’s probably why it didn’t make sense to me. I appreciate the passion to make sure there is corrections and stuff. I’m just here to enjoy their music honestly and sometimes you guys come at me hard haha all is good though! 💜 I think from now I’m gonna do some research before reacting. I like reacting raw but I don’t want to have to keep pining my comment to explain my reaction. (Just keep in mind that I have a video going live everyday this week so I’ll start doing that after those) Thank you!

Honestly, I was really impressed with what you gathered from a first viewing. I think you got all the really important points about that fear of losing a love for music. And I wouldn’t worry about knowing the quote about “first death” beforehand. ARMY is usually good about providing any missing clues! We love to share information and knowledge, and I know I certainly wouldn’t expect you to know all those little pieces beforehand. I’m still fairly new to the fandom, so I’ve relied a lot on other ARMYs filling in all the details for me. I love your raw, first experience reactions. 💜 please don’t feel pressured to get every little detail right or to watch things in a certain order. There’s no “right” way to get into BTS or to react to them. Just do what you want. It’s worth it!

I second Shauna Stock. Keep reacting fresh. No need to research first! ARMY loves sharing their knowledge, I don’t think anyone means to come off as harsh criticism. Ok. There may be one or two, but you should ignore them. Keep in mind that ARMY is International, and for a lot of viewers/commenters English may not be their first language, and it may come of a little more abrasive then intended. Most importantly, when you come in with fresh eyes, instead of others preconceived ideas, you may notice something that someone else has missed. Once again, you’re doing fine. Keep going your way.

Don't worry too much. Do your thing. I honestly don't think you need to do any research at all before watching a mv. There's no need. Just focus on the mv and that's it. I can only speak for myself but if I see you are missing something I like to explain where it's coming from or what u missed, or if there's references. But I don't expect you to know everything beforehand. It's okay, just enjoy bts journey

"Black swan" is inspired by a quote: "a dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful". "Black swan" is about their fear that some day they'll lose their passion for music and that would be their first death. It has connection with their other song - "Interlude: Shadow" (Suga's solo). Recommend you to check it out.

Another little tidbit. Interlude: Shadow is one of three. Once again, I recommend all three. Intro: Persona (RM) Interlude: Shadow (Suga) Outro: Ego (J-Hope) I believe this is from Carl Jung’s theories (psychology). Someone who likes to delve deeper into this area, correct me if I’m wrong.

Jin is the one they spotted on the street. What's ironic is that even though he basically learned from scratch when it comes to singing and dancing, he proved himself well. Jin's voice was critically praised by the Grammy's with the song Fake Love labeled as "silver voice", his solo song Moon was hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as number 5 in Top 75 Greatest Boyband Songs, he was also praised for his triple high note in the song Crystal Snow. Also Jin's song Epiphany and the latest song Abyss tackles self love and mental health. Enjoy BTS. Welcome to Bangtan world.

The constant phrasing of "first death" is derived from Martha Graham, a choreographer's quote: "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing, this first death is the more painful." It's pretty grim-sounding but it's basically an artist losing their passion for their craft seen as a first mortal death.

They're not saying that they have lost their passion for music, it's them asking themselves what IF they lost that connection? It's about their fear of losing that passion. The song was inspired by the actual film "Black Swan" (hence the contemporary dance) and by Martha Graham's quote "a dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful". You'll find this quote in their Black swan art film video (it's another version/interpretation of the song) ...ALSO, this song is lyrically connected to "Interlude: Shadow". It's quite complex, but since the album Map of the Soul: 7 was about the different parts of the psyque (according Carl Jung's principle of individuation in the book Map of the soul: the persona, the shadow and the ego), "interlude:shadow" and "black swan" both were about the shadow. In fact the abum is divided in 3: Intro: persona-----Interlude:Shadow---- Outro: Ego

There's a saying that "a dancer dies twice, the first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful" that means that people not only dancer can only dies twice but people who has passion in something. It feels like dying when you lose something you love/your passion. And BTS talks about it in Blackswan, BTS says that they're scared to lose their passion to their art and it will feel like the first death and it's much more painful. Actually I've watch this korean drama called 'Angel's last mission : love' and the female lead character was a ballerina (black swan/swan lake is also a famous ballet) and she become blind because of the accident while performing ballet after that incident she can't perform and she also said those lines that "a dancer dies twice, the first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful". When i see that line i suddenly remember this song and how painful it is to lose what you love and what your passionate about. And BTS also use contemporary dance in this song and it incorporates dnace like jazz, modern dance and also ballet so it's really amazing how BTS connect things in artistic way. They really love what they're doing and it shows. They're openly telling ARMYS and people that losing their love for their passion is like dying and it's more painful. I really love that they're openly telling this by sharing it in MUSIC (their passion). Thank you very much for this, I think you kinda get it but here is the explanation. Anyways thank you and borahae. 💜

Like with most creatives, when one experiences burn out or forgets why they're doing what they're doing, they may lose their passion and go into a dark place. But I like how from j-hope's verse onwards in the song, they accept that even when they go into those dark places in their minds, they'll keep hold of their passion for music and come out of it.

To add, not sure someone had mentioned... They almost disband in early 2018, they talked abut the pressure and all that, if the passion for music was still there etc. They talked about it in one of their shows. So the first death is actually when you loose for your passion (what ever that may be) and the second death is when you actually die.

Jimin is visually representing a black swan in this video dying the "first death" that they're talking about (no longer having a passion for music)-that's what the black wings are for. :) It matches perfectly too since he studied contemporary dance. I'm not sure if they wanted to incorporate this too, but there's also a philosophical concept of a black swan: a "black swan" is an unexpected occurrence or event, so that's another layer of complexity to an already-complex song. lol.

It's an immense pleasure to watch you reacting and figuring out what the song is about. BTS wrote Black Swan as an outlet of their fears as an artist. 2020 is their seventh year in the music industry after their debut in 2013, and they've openly declared in the song that they are terrified that the passion they had for music in the beginning will slowly dwindle because of huge pressures (fame and success) and the lack of inspiration. I see the other comments have already addressed the puzzle of the first death, thus I would only add some links to the videos related to BTS "Black Swan" you might like to react to: - (Choreography) BTS "Black Swan" Dance Practice: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLqDZM1yzb20kqs.html - BTS "Black Swan" MV Shooting Sketch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrd4ZK-ipr2ZdoU.html - (angel) Jimin's Black Swan Solo Behind The Scenes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrOWo5WbyLGZYoE.html - Who's That Shadow?: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdF9frKWstKnh2g.html - BTS "Black Swan" MV Reaction by BTS: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grd7atd3ltysYqs.html - BTS "Black Swan" Art Film Reaction by BTS: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLhppJiaupPLeok.html - Musical Actors BTS: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orl7Z7CnxtaZmWQ.html Greetings from Canada:-)

Great reaction again ^^ Are you sure your mom wouldn't like BTS though? :) My daughter introduces me to their music and I'm so happy she did, so just saying ... ;) Song is inspired by a quote by a famous dancer, saying that "the day a dancer stops dancing is his/her first death, and the most painful one". Black Swan is indeed about the feeling of losing passion for music, the fear that this can happen to them one day, and they will feel like dying. In fact the whole " map of the soul - seven" album is inspired by Carl Jung' theories about different "parts" from our psyche , the Persona, the Shadow, the Ego. Black Swan is related to the Shadow part, that is constituted of our repressed fears, the traits of characters that we don't admit, and so on...

3:37 the way they are talking about first death is because there’s a saying that an artist dies twice; once when they fall out of love with their craft and another when they actually die. and seeing as this song is about losing love for something you’re passionate about you can see how it’s fitting. hope this helped ! :)

According to the description of “Black Swan” on Melon, Martha Graham’s quote - “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” - was the inspiration for the song. “Black Swan” tells the story of a dancer, an artist, who fears the death of their career: the moment when they can no longer perform on stage. The moment when music no longer touches BTS’s hearts or stirs their passion is the moment when the specter of that “first death” appears. At the end of the video, the specter recedes, signifying that BTS has not experienced that yet. Beautiful performance. I love this one.

From my point of view, I think that black swan is not just about music but more about the things that we are passionate about but in some point we lost the path of it due to different circumstances in our lives, that will be the "first death" because you can feel lost or empty. However, we have to overcome those issues because "nothing can devour me". Well, I don't really know, I just love this song with all of my heart.

The quote about first death everyone is mentioning is one from legendary dancer Martha Graham. The album Black Swan is from is Map of the Soul: 7, and it contains a lot of inner exploration of their lives as people, artists, a group, and as friends. There are some really great live performances of this out there if you ever get a chance to check them out.

Just wanted to say I’m really enjoying your reactions! Don’t worry if you don’t get all of the meaning when you first watch! Sometimes it takes a few watches along with reading lyric translations and maybe looking up what the guys said themselves about the song. I seriously got into BTS 8 months ago and I am still learning so much (even about Black Swan, which is the first song I really got into!). Also art can be interpreted many ways, so don’t ever feel like you are “wrong”! We can learn the artist intention and still get our own personal meaning from a song. That’s what makes it special. Keep up the good work and most of all I hope you enjoy yourself!!

The lyrics of this song is based on Martha Graham's Quote "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." This also applies to BTS as musicians, If someday music "can no longer resonate ", "no longer make my heart vibrate".. and..."the heart no longer races ..when hearing the music play" , then... "that would be my first death".

I really enjoy your reactions, and I can tell that they are super genuine, which I love. I would just encourage you, though I know it's really hard, to not worry about the people who get all upset when you get things "wrong" or don't watch things in the "right" order. I just worry that if you continue to spend energy on those people that you will start to not enjoy doing these reactions. Just do you! Watch the videos in whatever order you gosh darn well please and enjoy making all sorts of theories about the videos, even if they turn out to be wrong. Trust me, every single Army has gotten a theory wrong at some point, because they are so complex to figure out. I know some Armys can come at people pretty hard, and I feel like that is unfair and wrong. Don't worry about those people. Just let 'em be mad "until it all becomes ashes" (lyrics from BTS' "Ugh"). I think a true, raw reaction is much better than an educated one, because it's the most genuine reaction to how you feel watching it for the first time, with no preconceived notions. The education side of things can come later. Just let those comments roll right off your shoulders!

the one thing i don't see anyone mentioning in the comments is they had a bad period between late 2017 and early 2018 where they were burnt out and dealing with the immense pressure of getting so famous globally that they had to have a serious discussion about whether they'd let their contract run out and quit or resign and continue. i think that's be relevant to this song lol also here's the behind the scenes for jimin's solo shoot for the video (there are subs!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrOWo5WbyLGZYoE.html

so this song is about loseing passion for something, it can be something diffrent for every individual, for them it means loseing passion for music but for me it's about loseing passion about handball (sport). in their other MV for the song it started with the quote “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” - Martha Graham, so the "first death" would be loseing passion about what you love. it don't need a spesific reason to this action.

They used a quote from Martha Graham, who was one of the people made the constitution of modern dance, there is even a technic named after her. She said that when a dancer experiences death twice, the first when they stops dancing, it is like their first death, and the most painful one. I think bts here wants to say when they will stop making music it will be like their first death. I know this feeling exactly, I danced for 16 years in a high level(ballet, modern and contemporary dance), and I stopped when I went to university. It feels like something is missing till nowadays, if I see a dancer performance I am always near to crying. It really feels like dying a little bit.

I think that their fear of loosing their connection with music stems from the fear that what they do is becoming too much like work and not something they do out of passion. They’ve mentioned a couple time that they try and keep things moving and try to change things up to keep their “job” from becoming monotonous and unpleasant.

There is a term used in business and the sciences, "black swan event." Because black swans are rare, it means something rare. Something that happens once in an eon. It could be an extraordinarily high-performing stock in the financial markets, it could be a company that does something unusual and successful that had not been conceived of before, it could be an invention that makes a lot of money in ways that had been thought to be impossible, it could be the discovery of a new galaxy or black hole where it was assumed that galaxy or black hole could not exist prior, things like that. There are a number of interpretations of the lyrics for this song. One thing I have not seen proposed, but which I believe is apt, is that BTS themselves are a black swan event. They are a once-in-a-lifetime group, who use music, dance, and performance to send messages of emotional and spiritual health packaged up in hip-hop and pop music. Who. Became. Crazy. Successful. RM would know that term. If he was using it as a metaphor in this song, for BTS's professional success, then here is my interpretation of the other things we see. The lyrics that talk about disconnection from music and first death have been explained by others. It is said that when this song was written, BTS members were exhausted and feeling pressured, and wanted to disconnect from everything. Personal experience has put me through stuff similar to that, and what happened to me was I became emotionally disassociated from things, as if my brain was saying, "take a rest, I'll still be here when you come back and get active again." But then, to come back, you have to go on a personal journey of reconnection. With yourself and your own creative capabilities. And you have to regain your confidence, and your rootedness in your own soul. About black wings, If you are a black bird, your black wings are expected and natural and wholesome. When Jimin gets his black wings, that is both his freedom and his burden. It is BTS's freedom and BTS's burden, too. Jimin is serving as an inflection point in the whole seven-member creative dynamic. He is being a temporary model for the creative process for the whole group. Wings let you fly. But also, You have to learn the skills to use them. So that becomes a burden. Also, they have a natural weight. That also becomes a burden. And their presence in your life means that you lose certain types of flexibility, in order to support the wings. And that too becomes the burden. As the song continues, Jimin and all the other members dance without wings. Sometimes their shadows are present, and sometimes they are not. I believe these passages are about the work that a person has to do to reconnect with their own creativity, and start to get their skills back after a hiatus. As a person works through that process, there are struggles and doubt, but there is also exercise of the muscles that control and support their wings, meaning their creativity. Because this is a serious narrative, and Life Goes On, the struggle and work is never completely finished. So there is no happy ending to the song, where everything turns to light and smiles. The end of the song shows that there is still some doubt, still some tiredness. But by the end of the song, the process is far enough along that it can be said that the artist, that BTS, have stepped back into creative life, and no longer feel disconnected from music, dance, and the spoken word art that they make. Just my two cents. I wrote the above after your remark about black wings. So now I've watched the rest of your reaction, and yes, your interpretation is right. (The first death comes from a quote that somebody did, where they said losing their connection with their art is the first death, that comes before the second death at the end of our lives.) 💜🌿💜

LOVED your response!!! Thanks for reacting to one of my absolute favourite BTS songs/MV. The message of the song about dealing with fears of losing your love and passion for what drives you is so profound. The lyrics/sentiment are based on what the the legendary dancer, Martha Graham, once said, "a dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." The one at the very beginning, dancing is my bias JIMIN aka your Angel AND he also did the shadow dances for SUGA & JK so amazing! OMG Jimin gets BLACK WINGS because he IS THE BLACK SWAN!!! This MV is SO outstanding for me because of how JIMIN/Angel shines so bright. Jimin is not only a uniquely talented singer he is a PHENOMENAL dancer. Caitlin, Jimin was never a professional dancer but studied dancing! FYI, when this MV first came out and BTS were doing TV shows to promote it J-Hope/Hobi when asked immediately said it was all "JIMIN, JIMIN, JIMIN"! Many dancers/dance experts say Jimin is in a class of his own above the rest because he is able to reconcile his modern/ contemporary dance training with his BTS/Hip-Hop training which are antithetical, and extremely difficult to do! Great reaction - keep up the great job! AGAIN if you are interested in the incredible dance work for that video by Jimin/Angel then do check out "Jimin's Black Swan Solo Behind the Scenes - BTS" that BigHit put out under their [BANGTAN BOMB] series. The part where your weren’t sure if it was Suga or J-Hope, but settled with J-Hope is actually Suga ☺️ He actually does come in twice in this song. The beginning verse and the part right after J-Hope. I love this song. Even if someone didn’t read the lyrics, it’s still has a good beat and has that R&B/hip-hop feel. People probably already said this, but Jimin with the black wings is like him being the black swan. This song’s theme in terms of dance is up Jimin’s alley since his contemporary/modern dance background. The shadow dropping in the last scene is actually Jimin’s shadow, which is pretty haunting because it looks like you don’t know where it is coming from. I like how all the guys really hit their lines hard and with passion. Love their live performance of it on the Late Late Show with James Corden, which is actually the first time BTS revealed the song around the beginning of this year (before they released the music video later on). Then the most recent performance of it on the 2020 MMA (major Asian music awards) is amaaazing.

There are more layers of meaning too, but you got the main one right away--kudos! 👏🏽 "A dancer dies twice", the legendary choreographer Martha Graham said, "once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." And thank you for giving Jin a shout out. Lately I have been really noticing and loving his voice in particular, as well as his ability to portray emotions so well in his performing. Just found your channel. It's growing fast! Anyway, this is one of three songs that RM cried while writing the lyrics. They are weighted down with resposabilities to their company, each other, and to us fans. There is a quote about two deaths... The first death is losing your love for your passion in what you do. In this case, creating music and performing. That would be their first death. At one point BTS was considering about not resigning their contract. Many fans could tell something was off because of watching videos but we didn't know how close they were to giving up until I think last year's MAMA Awards? Or was it two years ago? Time flies.

I like that you went back to your "bubbles" and making this reaction channel more you that way. And I think you did great interpreting the song without the background knowledge. You're perceptive and intelligent and passionate. You nice, keep going! ;) There is no one right way to interpret a song, so whatever meaning you get out of it, however it strikes you personally, that's just as real as however someone else may interpret it. That is what art is, right? Please also bear in mind that BTS ARMY is a global fandom and many people comment in English when it is not their first language, so take the comments worded bluntly with a grain of salt and presume they have good intentions and are not attacks. Unless, of course, it's obvious they're attacking. then just ignore the haters. ha ha!
