MLMs primary victims are middle class (usually) religious moms. They target that “mom guilt.” Oh, you work? Shouldn’t you be spending more time with your kids? We can help you with that! Or - oh, you don’t work? Shouldn’t you be helping your spouse financially support your family? We can help with that! They target that sense of failure. That whatever path you choose won’t be enough. Obviously, they’ll take anyone who wants to sign up. But their motivation tactics often work best on those who are riding that line financially.

You are absolutely correct 💯. Why do I say that, you ask? Unfortunately, I was one of those people! I stayed home with the kids, and I got the “wouldn’t you love to be able to continue staying home but actually get paid to stay home and be a Mom?” Ugh! I also got the “wouldn’t you love to use the product and be a walking billboard? You’ll easily lose all the baby weight, and people will ask you all the time what you’re using, and you can make an easy sale right there.” It makes me sick to my stomach to think back and know I was weak and so gullible! Needless to say, I didn’t make a penny, but I definitely lost more than a few! Oh…and I didn’t lose ANY of the baby weight with those products! Modere is a freaking JOKE, and Jessie Lee (sp?) was crazy!

My niece was selling Monat, I don’t know if she still is or what happened but she worked her way up to the trips and big money. She was one of the top sellers in North America. In the process she lost friends and alienated family. Honestly I feel bad for her. She has a degree and could be working in a high paying job, but she chose to stay at home and raise her family. These are the target for MLM’s, SAHM’s and people with disabilities that cant’ work full time. Disgusting.

I realized when I got “magically thin” due to a chronic illness, that if I pretended i lost weight through a product, because I was actually starving & was losing weight very quickly, I could prob do quite well using social media for income & repping an MLM. I have a mind that thinks of things like that lol, but immediately realized it would be so evil that I could never do that AND I’d end up with only fake mlm friends in my life. But I will say, it feels like a large chunk of American women are actively trying to get scammed. At some point, we need to either check and see if something’s wrong with people’s 🧠 or announce that we cannot spend more public money on helping them if over 250 warnings have already been issued. There’s a much bigger problem going on and I’m kind of tired of having to muster sympathy for people with normal cognitive skills who actively choose this. I found out in 1997 how this all worked & have shared that info, to absolutely no avail. If you choose to be dumb and kinda evil, you probably will get screwed over, and quite frankly, good! These ladies are bad actors with weird motives that disrupt everyone else’s lives. No more sympathy.

Yes this! MLMs are popular in conservative religious circles because women aren't "allowed" to have "jobs" but for some reason working non-stop to sell an MLM doesn't count. It's desperation and boredom that sucks these people in.

@@eustacia03some of that is the case, but it’s also the case that women produce multiple children, not understanding how expensive it is to care for them. My sister just told me about Seint makeup because she knew a girl from school that tried to recruit her. She said she did indeed cry about it on Facebook. I’m very anti-mlm after a really terrible experience with one. I think these mlm’s are shifting to affiliate programs largely due to a very negative public opinion, lawsuits and the ftc. I think this is a good thing and will make the business a lot less predatory. I still won’t buy just because I heard that their products are overpriced and don’t perform well.

I really doubt Sephora's ability to last in the UK (as a British citizen). Britain is dominated by Boots and Superdrug which has really good points/rewards systems. Hearing that Sephora's points can only be used towares sample size items sounds like a joke to be honest. With Boots and Superdrug I can use my points towards products, and they always have great deals. I'm honestly unsure on what their differentiator will be here. Boots has more luxury brands than Superdrug, whilst Superdrug caters towards the younger gen. What can Seohora offer, except a lackluster rewards system?

Exactly. In the US, I strayed away from Sephora years ago because 1) Ulta started carrying most of the brands I regularly purchased and 2) Ulta’s rewards program is WAY better. I think regulation is iffy, with the current political climate, but I am guessing that the lawsuits are hitting them hard AND they may think they can break into the insane sales numbers on TikTok, but that feels like a micro trend. Just a reminder that it is 110% normal for founders to sell. It’s how it works most of the time. Founder often has a clear personal vision, and if they own 51%, it is their call, but smart founders realize that once there are full time career employees & contracts & a whole economic flow, that they rarely have all the knowledge needed to adjust their specific vision so that it does not negatively effect that infrastructure. Often founders, even in the non profit world, cannot see how the company has changed positively by adding other people with visions of their own, or they won’t be reasonable about plans and imperil their employees. I admire Patrick for knowing when it’s time to go, it seems he’s built something very strong and is now leaving operations, something he’s not expert in, to the people who can take it from here. A founder leaving voluntarily & head held high is a beautiful thing, plus it’s just so much work & at the top, getting life balance sometimes hurts everyone below you. Best to exit gracefully & keep on doing new things or retire into a leisure life!

You cannot use MLMs on a resume. Every hiring manager I’ve ever spoken to will tell you it is a bad sign and not to add it to a resume. They are not effective sellers (even if they “did well” in an MLM) and their selling tactics they used in MLMs are really just bad habits that real companies don’t want to have to help them unlearn.

I don’t feel like MLMs are capable of doing anything fairly. I’ve seen Beauty Counter at Ulta, and they certainly aren’t cheap. I also think they if the seller does so much work to sell the product and the customer doesn’t use your code, you just did all that work for nothing. These MLMs are still just protecting themselves and dismissive of the employees. Nothing new in big business.

What makes me wonder is did the ftc or whoever is in charge nudge them about being a legal pyramid scheme? If so that makes sense that they would remove the recruitment aspect. Also high commison rates have been accounted for already in any mlm product. They already cost so much to allow commissions to be paid. If you remove the commission cost you get the actual price the makeup should be sold in retail withoht the middle man salesman getting the commissions paid to them.

I feel like MLMs are more a symptom of the toxic work culture in the US. No shade, but in a lot of ways content creation/reviews and influencing is a form of MLM. Most of the beauty influencers are selling a life that only being born into money can afford you. I am borrowing most of my ideas from Financial Diet’s video on this topic, but we gotta really expect better of our government so we aren’t desperately trying to get ahead of each other, and stop buying into hype.

Honestly, I don't really feel for these people anymore. We all have jobs to pay our food and rent and it's always tragic, if someone loses their income. But nowadays, with multiple tv shows and so much information online, people can't tell me that they didn't knew how problematic MLMs are. These women are not stupid, especially the higher ups. They're fantastic sales people who are able to talk other women into joining them, just to make more money for themselves. They know exactly which game they're playing and as long as everything is working in their favour, there's nothing wrong. But when they suddenly can't rely on their passive income anymore, then the company is to blame?

I think this is going to be the new MLM business structure and more companies will be making the change. Not only are people becoming more educated on MLM's and refusing to join, but they are reporting them. I think MLM's run a real risk of being shut down as pyramid schemes, so they need to adapt.

Honestly I’m more likely to try a Seint product if they are no longer an MLM. I would have absolutely no issue buying something and using one of the girls links so they get credit. I have no problem with that at all. The problem most people have is the relentless recruiting. It makes people not want to even try the products because they’re so afraid they’re going to be boss babed to oblivion in the DMs. I actually hope Seint does better with this model of business. Other MLMs may see that if you just make a good product and get rid of recruiting then you may have a profitable company without being sleazy!

*hairstylist of 14 years here 👋 - i've followed quite a few hair influencers and even former colleagues get sucked into the BIG haircare MLM. So many of them have had to do a massive rebrand because they topped out and lost their credibility as stylists. When you are a corporate marketing cog who pushes products HARD, your clientele notices. MLMs go a step further and want to loop in your client to sell products. No brand is going to work for everyone. If these "makeup artists" are professionals, they should assess their options and work with brands that align with their preferences, values, clientele, etc. From the perspective of the hair world, this affiliate structure is honestly very very generous, especially if its being drop shipped to the consumer and not just sold as wholesale.

Most of Seints "artists" won't have big downlines purely because that's how the system works - for each upline person you need lots of downline ppl (one person recruits 4 people etc), and even more for the next level down (those 4 recruit 4 each =16) and that expands dramatically as you go on. So there's always way more people with very little downline than people with big downlines.

Hey Jen! I am here as a Seint artist myself. I do want to say it surprising you were unable to find those crying Instagram posts... Because they were posted all over socials within the first 12 hours! by top leaders and even those who were given a month's notice actively bashed Seint, and within 3 days some of my top leaders were using our Seint groups to promote the new companies that they were joining... To open up an opportunity to teach and build somewhere new... Which is really frustrating to say that when just because our teams are dissolving, does not mean you cannot be a teacher? So you only want to be a leader if you're gaining something from teaching me? I love the company & I am one of those people who have not built a team. It does not affect me as much as our top leaders in the company. Yes their lives will be altered by this change... I think it's important to be consciously aware that MLM companies are not forever. To stand on that reliability for your home sole income, is honestly ignorant. I think people's true colors have shown themselves with the way they handled this news. However I will say that the company also from an artist standpoint handled it very unprofessionally. The email was sent out 9:00pm in a email post on our telegram group. The founder only a few days ago addressed the changes. I'm only 8 min in but I wanted to share before I forgot all I wanted to say lol

I will say yes your teams are dissolving and if your friendships cease to exist because you are no longer under the same team is really shady and means that you were only my friend because I benefited you. I am not close with my team I've tried and it's just not as close knit It's a little catty it is a smaller team but in the past year I have found a group of artist friends we're all from different teams who either don't have one or not close with them and we've all said that we will continue our friendship after the transition.
