One Day 50 years ago I meant the most beautiful woman I ever saw. I asked her to my apartment for dinner. She came over I put this album on my turn table. We danced over and over for hours. She stayed and 50 years later she is still with me. We still put this album on.

Very sad news that Michael Pinder of The Moody Blues passed away yesterday at the age of 82. As a founding member, Mike was the group's keyboardist and mellotron-master, as well as one of the group's composers, singers and also recited their spoken word passages such as Late Lament here at the end of Nights in White Satin. He was one of my great musical heroes and a lovely man whom I had the honor of meeting on a few occasions. Rest In Peace, dear Mike! You really made the world a better and more beautiful place.

@@barsandbarbells2022 , there is a video of them singing this but as a more mature group 😂 The band was on course for breaking up but Dustin Hayward wrote this over night and the band went on to do a lot more great songs. Oh the last bit with the talking isn't on the record.

The Moody Blues were one of a kind. Justin Hayward, the lead singer and lead guitarist is a musical genius. By the way, he wrote most of their hits and this one he wrote at the age of 19. If you google him he's still killing it @ age 76. Dude has one of the greatest voices in rock PERIOD. Full STOP.

This was my favorite band when I was in high school. I bought all of their vinyl albums and then "graduated" to Pink Floyd in college. I was 17 then and now I'm 70, and I've never tired of listening to the music of either band. "Senior citizens wish they were young" resonates a bit stronger now but I'm actually very happy to have lived my life from 1954 to present.

The live version is great but I think someone e new to the group needs to her this album version first. I’ve seen many reactors listen to the single version and although still a great song, it really pales in comparison with the full original album version. I wouldn’t say the reactors “screwed up” because unless they are given a link, how are they to know which is the “correct” version to listen too. I always prefer that a reactor listen to the original studio version of any song or group that is new to them. There are some live versions of songs in which some key members are no longer with the band. Pink Floyd being one. No Roger Waters.

For many years I thought the cut off version was the full version, never heard this one on the radio. Think it was the single released in 1972 when it hit US Singles Chart number 2.@@jazziered142

For someone who heard this song for the first time and seeing the album for the first time you were 100% spot on when it comes to the theme of cycles. The album does portray the cycle of a day but in a way also the cycle of a life. It was specifically written by the band that way and it was as such one of the early examples in rock music of a concept album. Remember, this was written and recorded in 1967, the same year that The Beatles released their highly influential album Sgt. Peppers Hearts Club Band which in itself is also something of a concept album. The Moody Blues were on the cutting edge of what was modern pop / rock music at the time.

The cycle is completed with the fade-out of the gong ... which, now with digital technology, if you immediately replay the album from the beginning, you realize that long slow fade-in is the gong hit from the "Night" before...

The Moodies' keyboard player, Mike Pinder, is who turned Paul McCartney on to the Mellotron, which was used quite a bit on Beatles albums.

The lead singer had just broken up with his girl friend. As a breakup gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. I'll warn you now. The flute solo will haunt you forever. At time when you are simply drifting you will suddenly hear that flute in your head and you are back in the song. I listened to it back in the sixties and still have come back. It is a song that speaks of love found and lost. He was 19 when he wrote it.

Someone said in the comments of another video that he made the song for his girlfriend and that they are still together after all those years. I'm not sure what the truth is.

"Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

I don’t usually include Go Now when listing their top songs. That was a cover of an R&B song and before Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined. Even Graeme Edge thinks of that version of the group as a different band. That version only lasted a couple years at the most and had one album.

Question is such a powerful song...the transition to "I'm looking for" part of the song is unreal. My dad used to play question when I was a kid and it always stuck with me and I'm 47 now lol...Nights in white satin is fantastic aswell.

I was 9 when this came out in 1967 and only ever heard the short version growing up. I remember thinking how perfect and original the gong ending of Bohemian Rhapsody was in 1975, and never learned until many years later of this long version of Nights In White Satin, with the gong ending eight years earlier! What a groundbreaking masterpiece (same year as A Day In the Life by The Beatles)!

From this very album is also another great song - Tuesday Afternoon. As you have surmised this is a concept album with it being a day from morning to night. BTW The Moody Blues are considered the Daddies of progresive rock (which is the same category as Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, ELO, etc...).

Thats why I wrote etc... to cover my ass because I knew that off the top of my head I would inadvertently leave several good prog bands off my list.

I think you need to remember this was recorded in 1967. The Moodys with Justin Heywood stunned the lisener back then and it still sound fresh and powerful now

Hi guys, great reaction. Sam totally nailed it! Days of Future Passed (1967) by The Moody Blues is one of the first concept albums and some of the earliest progressive rock music. This album is meant to be listened to from start to finish as it takes the listener on a journey through a 24 hour period. In fact, the gong sound that ends the album also starts the album reinforcing the cyclic nature of the entire work. Very perceptive of you to mention that it also portrays the cycle of life and love. What an incredible piece of art created by these five young British lads! Justin Hayward wrote Nights in White Satin when he was just 19 years old. The passion in the music and in his vocal performance is undeniable. Oh, and the artwork on their first seven albums closely represents the musical content contained therein. Pretty cool. Cheers.

1972 Moody Blues Nights in white Satin is pure classic. I can remember skating to this song in 1972 in my hometown of Westland, Michigan with my Ex-Girlfriend Donna The Lead Singer Justin Hayward is a musical genius.

Boy this one takes me back. It came out in 1967 & was still very big in 1971 when I graduated. Totally reminds me of my senior prom. The perfect loooooong slow song. Tee hee. LOL Thanks for the memories. This song is up there with Stairway to heaven. Both were huge at that time. I love that you guys 'get it'. This is a masterpiece. I am so grateful to have been there in the 60's & 70's to hear real music by talented musicians, not people good at technical gadgets & autotune.

Yes, it was still played on the radio in 1971. I remember being on a date in 1972 when it came on the car radio. My date was someone I just met, very handsome. I liked him immediately, and he liked me. We just clicked. But that was our first date and last. He was in the military and had to leave. Had just been home for Christmas. I saw him later on but I was in a relationship and so was he. My boyfriend knew him and we were at his house. I'm not sure if he remembered me? Quess it wasn't meant to be.

This whole album is amazing. It one of the first concept albums. It follows one person on one day from dawn until bedtime. Besides this song “Tuesday Afternoon” was also released as a single from the album.

The Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, & Traffic were the godfathers of Progressive Rock and they were all musical geniuses. We were lucky enough to see John Lodge on tour this summer where they played the entire Days of Future Passed album. Keith Emerson of ELP was touring with him as their production manager.

Fans were treating Moody Blues band as rock God's, they were not comfortable with this , so their response came in a song which was a hit called " I'm just a singer in a rock&roll band" .

The Moody Blues truly are one of the greatest all-time R&R bands. Two of their other awesome songs are: Your Wildest Dreams -and- The Story in Your Eyes. I’m sure you will both like them.

As someone who was a teenager in the days when this and other great classic rock was produced I can tell you that The Moody Blues were my favorite group and I consider this one of the greatest ‘concept albums’ ever made. These concept albums are always best listened to in their entirety from start to finish, preferable in a darkened room on a good stereo, or at least a good set of headphones. Just let it envelop you, as you should with classical music.

When this came out it was such a slap in the face to use orchestra when everyone was leaning on the electric guitar but it established the lush sound of the Moody Blues who could also rock or play ballads or harmonize. Very talented musicians as many bands of that era and SOOOO many hits from the radio and within each album. Most albums had a theme.

YES! This is the version to really get into. It is more than music, but it is art for the ears. With the poem at the end brings it to a whole other level. It's songs like this that I wish I had learned to play the violin, as well as "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. Absolutely right to compare with Pink Floyd, the kind of music that you just want to lay in your beanbag chair and mellow out to. Love to see the head bobs and playing "conductor". LOL

Great reaction Sam and Phil! The Moody Blues had a different sound from anyone else at the time. I was fortunate to see them live in the early 2000s. Their sound was just as good then as it was 30+ years before. Excellent choice!

This was one of the earliest and most ambitious concept albums. 1967 ... a truly awesome time in music. And these guys are just out of their teen years. Not only did this play on the radio alongside all the pop and rock, but IIRC, it became a radio hit three different times, years apart. You could quote a line from that poem at the end, any people knew where it was from. Another hit from this album is "Tuesday Afternoon," but you should listen to the whole thing.

The first time I heard this song was in March 1968. I was serving in the U.S. Navy and on shore leave and sitting in a bar in Toulon, France.

I remember when I was a young child this was on the radio all the time everyone listened to them and never commented. It was a hidden Gem made people at ease. A quite love chant we all took in.

days of future past - the whole album is great , most members of the band were trained in classical music and incorporated it into their music and shared it with the rest of us , when i first heard it in my teens i liked it a lot , now that i'm 68 the music does bring back memories, thanks for that .

I was lucky to have seen them in Concert in Cleveland in , I think, 1969. And they remain the bell weather music of the era, along with , to me, The Firm , who were there at the same time in my finding the music of the 60s. The Blues album of choice to me is their 1st one...Childrens, Childrens, Children. The opening of this album is to me the meaning of the mood of the group. (This song opened the concert I saw). I also was fortunate enough to have seen them twice at outdoor venue at Blossom Music Center with the Cleveland Orchestra. It was there I introduced them to my young sons and they have remained Blues fans through the music of the 70s, 80s, andbeyond.

Now when you've heard this full version, time to see their live version version from Royal Albert Hall, not with the poem though. In this style may I recommend a song by Barclay James Harvest fittingly named "Poor man's Moody Blues" a bit similar to this song (else the poem at the end of course)

This was the first album that they went to what is their signature sound (airy, ethereal, dreamy, orchestral), this song in a shortened version for a single release charted extremely high when released in 1967, then incredibly the same song (version) was re-released in 1972, and again charted in the top ten. That's soo hard to do in music.

I've listened to this album many times and to me it has always been an allegory for life. The way the music progresses through the phases of life reflect the energy, spirit and mood.

I have always loved this song. It is both haunting and beautiful. This was always one of my Mother's favorites too.. hearing this makes me miss her...but always puts a sile on my face.

One must listen to this album to its end to really appreciate the full scope of this wonderful work of art. I've been a moody blues aficionado since 1967 I still listen to Moody Blues music in 2024 Justin Hayward has a few solo albums which are excellent. I've seen them live numerous times they never fail to produce a magnificent display of musical talent.

Often described as "The smallest symphony orchestra in the world" The Moodies have been my favorite band for over 40 plus years. Beautiful melodies and profound lyrics. This album a classic. The next several albums, up to Seventh Sojourn, to me, are the richest set of albums ever released over such a short period of time, each with a sprinkling of poetry. The albums then started to come out at a slower pace, but still with great music and lyrics. I saw them twice, in the 80s and 90s. During their 90's tour, they sent a symphony conductor ahead on the tour to rehearse the local symphony orchestra. This allowed the band to have a local orchestra on stage with them to perform songs live that could only have been done in the studio previously. If ever I were stuck on a desert island, with only one band I could listen to, it would be The Moodies. Every song could let me travel somewhere else. 💖

Can't get enough Moody Blues, had the wonderful experience of listening to them with the World Symphony Orchestra at Walnut Creek outdoors band shell near Raleigh, NC on a beautiful Summer night with the love of my life for the last 55 years. Awesome!

Released nearly 57 years ago. They didn't have AutoTune / ProTools to fix muffed notes, so there weren't any. Singers usually had to be able to sing, in order to become popular. Throw on headphones one of these nights. Set aside some time to listen to one of the "Core 7" Moody Blues albums.
