The new emboss tool in Fusion 360 makes wrapping text and sketch geometry in 3D easy - give it a try!
In this video I'll show you how I used it to quickly make a custom lens cover for my streaming camera, as well as some alternative methods you can try if the emboss tool doesn't achieve what you're looking for.

Nice Fusion 360 tip! I’ve used “Sheet Metal” on a curved line, unfolded the “metal”, added text, and then refolded. That seems to remain undistorted as well. But this is way easier! Thank you!

I have found that you can use the "rotation angle" of X degrees in the emboss tool to wrap the text around the object multiple times just as long as you don't intersect with the text. So the text is in a corkscrew readable text. Start at the top of the object and read the text as you rotate the object around. You do have to play with the degree of the angle to get it right, but it is not difficult. Works pretty good.

Workaround, make cylinder inside a sphere/torus/etc and emboss on that and combine it with the first part, and if you want the text to "curve" with the surface then make a slightly bigger spare/part and intersect that with the original part that has the text sticking out, now the text would have the same curve....

Another good video Angus, thanks. I've been playing with the Emboss tool to create knurls (another basic tool sadly lacking from Fusion 360). The old approach of creating a small detail and patterning it hundreds of times is too computationally intensive for such a small detail. I hoped that the Emboss tool would mean a shorter coffee break while it recomputed after an edit, but nope, still a long delay. I did discover that a really long string of text could be spiralled up a cylinder for many rotations by giving Emboss a small angle. Try it with a string of diamond characters (use any Unicode font in Character Map -> Search "diamond"). It's an easy way to create a sort-of-knurled surface.
@jalensailin
@jalensailin 3 жыл бұрын
lars christensen has a video on a workaround for knurled surfaces that might be helpful to you. I believe it's a livestream and he uses CAM techniques to produce the knurled surface which was relatively computationally-light compared to the pattern method

On the curved surface (like that ring) you could emboss/deboss on the flat inside with enough offset so that it protrudes on the outside. You would get letters that are "higher" towards the edge. Then offset the outside arc of the ring and make a new revolve that cuts off the letters to conform to the ring. It would be fine with no distortion :)

I tried my hand at a pencil cup (well, usb cable cup now) with a hexagonal pattern punched out. I ended up using the sheet metal workflow in order to do it (unroll, punch out, roll back up). This is one of those "why is this not a thing?" features for the longest time, so this will be nice. Shame that it won't work on a spherical surface, but I can live with just cylinder and cone.

Great video, thanks! Just what i was looking for :) actually for a simple, consistent shape like the ring you showed it would be really easy to get it working as well. just emboss on the inner flat surface, move the letters outwards until they stick out (or create a new surface to do that) and then offset the originals ring surface and cut off the letters. at least in theory this should work, maybe someone whos looking for this can test it out.

Embossing on an arced or other complex surface is possible. The more complex the surface, the more work it will take. Basically, use a dummy (tool) flat/cylinder surface to encapsulate the arced one, emboss onto that, cut away the tool surface, offset the base of the remaining emboss into the arced surface, finally use an offset from arced surface and keep the intersect. If you want to deboss instead, just use an intersect when you offset the base of the remaining emboss.

You can work around to emboss on a surface that is a revolved curve, but it's a 3 stage process. First emboss on a revolved flat but make the embossing deeper than you need. Then revolve the curve you wanted around and join it. Then offset that curve and revolve it to remove the top of the embossed text. A bit of a work around but the results look good.

Since that circular pattern doesn't seem to mind overlapping, you could pretty easily do a knurling pattern around an object. Make a V that stretches from the top to the bottom, emboss that, and then do the circular pattern with that embossed V. Put your number super-high, and they'll end up getting really close to each other, giving you a knurling pattern.

I'm used to doing this with an Extrude from the center of the object, with the Start "from object" option which works on spheres and all sorts. Some fonts do still fail, it is a feature I am told by Autodesk people... But yes, it still does cause some distortions compared to this new and quick method, and trying to go 360 would probably destroy reality.

Angus, couldn't agree with you more about the addition of the Emboss Tool. I came from Inventor and the "Emboss Tool" was sorely missed after moving to Fusion. Typically, the error you mention at 2:38, about the profiles failing, are most likely related to the chosen font. If you go into your sketch, right click on the text, and "Explode Text" you will most likely be able to find the culprit which caused the failed profile error. I find that it's most often where the profile of the text doubles back on itself, loops around itself, or appears "funky" in some form or another. If you don't plan on having to move your text again, you could trim up the "funky" bits and voila...the extrude can now be calculated.

I definitely should be using Fusion, but I still just can't get used to the workflow. So for anything complex I use Rhino. I've recently designed a guidescope* and as a cosmetic touch wrapped the whole thing in a debossed hexagon pattern. It takes forever to print due to the increased surface area, but it looks very nice👌 At least on this occasion, I was doing something that wouldn't have been easy in Fusion :) *A smaller camera equipped telescope, that sits on your larger 'scope, to make sure it's being kept exactly on target. Very useful in the long exposure photographs needed to capture the dim light from distant galaxies and nebula :)

You could use the emboss tool to make text go all around that curved surface ring, you'd have to actually first make the ring's surface flat, emboss text on it making it pretty "long", extrude and join the curved surface over the flat one, and cut away from the embossed text an offset body with the same curvature as the the ring's surface!
