NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #48: WRAWBY
Welcome to Wrawby, a small village sited between Barnetby le Wold and Brigg in North Lincolnshire on the A18. It lies 2 miles East of Brigg close to the M180 at Junction 5
The village is recorded as "Waregebi" in the Domesday Book, a name thought to derive from Old Danish, meaning "Wraghi's farmstead".
Alternatively it may derive from the Norse warg, which either means wolf, or it could be related to an old Swedish dialect word "vrage", meaning "mooring post"
Wrawby is small but its notable for a few things. For one, you cannot overlook the windmill, which stands on a hill high above the village. It’s the only remaining postmill in England
Also, on the border between Wrawby and Melton Ross is the site of a set of gallows and in its church - which used to serve Brigg until 1872, there hangs a notable tapestry
In recent years some community buildings have been sold for conversion into housing, such as the chapel and the parish rooms. Some farmland has also been sold for housing developments.
Wrawby retains a lot of character though, something which you all know by now I love to see in these places. It also has a great community, and people are proud to live here
