The wreck of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain was sunk on July 1, 2009 in the bay of Kaş on the Turkish Mediterranean coast for divers.
The C-47 Skytrain is the military version of the Douglas DC-3. The C-47 served as a transporter for the training of parachutists of the Turkish Air Force. It was donated to a dive center in Kaş after it was retired. With the help of the plane, a new artificial reef was to be created in the bay. Furthermore, the sinking was intended to create another diving attraction in Kaş. The aircraft was sunk on July 1, 2009 and today lies largely intact at a water depth of about 20 meters on the sandy seabed. The interior can also be dived through the open side hatch. [1] The middle section is empty except for the remaining benches of the parachutists. The cockpit is divided into two areas. In the rear part is the room for the navigator, in the front the actual cockpit with the two seats. It is so narrow in the cockpit that a diver can only swim out backwards. In the stern is another room that can also be dived. There used to be a toilet and storage space for accessories here.
The dive site is called Fener Kulesi or Lighthouse/Dakota and is located just south of Kaş Lighthouse. It can only be reached by boat. The surroundings of the wreck are characterized by sandy bottom, due to the sheltered location there are no waves and no currents here, but visibility is often limited. The wreck attracts many fish, it is moderately overgrown. The dive site is also well suited for beginners. North of the wreck are the remains of a former aquaculture on the seabed. A reef is located on the coastal side.
