What’s the ballpark price for a good tuner to tune a car? I understand that there is a lot of variables, just a ballpark. Just so I know what to expect. Thanks, Jared. BTW I’m just south of Rockford. Close to your old stomping grounds. Have a great day!

There’s something to be said for someone who isn’t just telling you information and actually tries to simplify it enough for the common man to understand. It’s a skill, and a hard one to get at that. When I explain things, I do my best to make sure that someone like my six year old cousin can at least mostly understand, because that means anyone can understand. It’s much harder than you’d think and I’m not very good at it. :)

Those rear wheels are awfully close to the base. I'm used to seeing tires on the roller from a very different angle.
@akkual
@akkual 3 жыл бұрын
It looks so, but I believe that is the very correct position. If tires would be on top of the rollers, there's nothing the tires would "push" against while putting load on. When they hang back a little, they will actually push against the rollers while putting load on making sure the grip stays as good as possible. And if the unfortunate would happen, and they would hit the base while rolling, the direction of roll is back at the rollers again - you may shorten the life of your tires in that, but at least you won't swung off the rollers.
@jaredshaffer3901
@jaredshaffer3901 3 жыл бұрын
There seems to be a lot of crazy explanations here. The simple answer is that as the car loads up, it stretches the straps and "climbs" the roller. When he lets off, it goes back to the neutral position. Some really high powered cars do this quite dramatically, to the point where if it wasn't set at the rear portion of the roller to begin with, it could likely climb off the roller during a pull.

With motorcycles (same applies to cars), I also recommend replacing the fuel filter, and cleaning out the injectors as well (avid believer in Redline's Complete Fuel System Cleaner - Pep Boys - add ENTIRE bottle to 5-7 gallons of gas and drive until it's on fumes).

Great video. Would love to know the mods for that car. It sounds like it has the RR-Racing tune which raises the limit from 6,800 rpm to 7,200. The stock tune does not disengage the converter at the limit. The flare at the end is the converter uncoupling at 6,800 and then the engine goes to 7,200 on the limiter. I am going through the journey of totally stock and adding various mods over the next 2 or 3 months. 427 hp (Mustang dyno??) is full bolt on power ( tune, headers, exhaust and inlet). These things make about 500 to 510 with all the bits at the engine. Super healthy for the mileage. 💪💪💪

Can vouch for bringing the fuel injector info with you to a dyno. Many years ago, I installed some 550cc injectors in my 1JZ and went to the tuner. I couldn't provide them the info such as the brand, voltage or dead times.. It made the job more time consuming for them. I ended up having heaps of problems with those injectors due to a blockage in one.. Lesson learned and bought brand new Bosch 1000cc's with all the info to provide to the tuner. Haven't had any problems since.

Spark plug temperature ranges. A hot plug is called that because the ceramic around the electrode is allowed to get hot in order to burn off deposits to clean the plug. The electrode will extend far out and there will be a lot of space between the metal surrounding and the ceramic with a deep well before the ceramic and metal touch. You do not want a hot plug if you’re expecting high cylinder temperature etc. A cold plug runs a lot colder as the ceramic is very shallow and comes into contact with the metal as quickly as possible without falling to insulate the electrode so that the spark can jump anywhere other than the tip. A cold plug may need cleaning regularly. You want a cold plug in a high temperature turbo charged engine to help control knock.

Credit where it's due, that segue into the RSL ad was as slick, Samcrac and Rich Rebuilds would be proud. Dyno videos fill me with anxiety at the amount of power being put out and hoping that something doesn't explode or rip loose... this video did not do much to reduce that anxiety. There's like a 2 inch margin between a dyno wheel moving a nearly 200 mph and a steel plate that isnt moving at all!

A big missed topic was getting a wideband O2 sensor (unless your car happens to have one stock that can be referenced). Most dyno operators offer a tailpipe sniffer, but it's never quite as accurate as having one closer to the engine (before the cat's of course, if you still have them). A good AEM unit is $200 - no reason to NOT run one. I sure wish I had a load dyno easily accessible without spending a fortune. MAF tuning is easy and relatively quick on the road. VVE tuning my car on the street sucks.

Altitude/air pressure will not affect your tune if you have a turbo. At lower air pressure/density the turbo spins faster and compensates. This was discovered in the 1930's when they started fitting turbos to aircraft engines. Drive your car on the flat, then take it up Pike's Peak :-)
