I was and EMT working First Aid from 93 to 95. I used to hang in back with the wrestlers as I at the time also worked in the Independent Circuits and knew a bunch of the guys. At one show Owen and his wife and oldest son at the time needed to get to his car in the parking lots but by the time he was ready, a huge crowd had developed outside. I told him not to worry and had them all get in the back of our ambulance and made it to his car. Its a memory I cherish, especially since he was just a cool down to earth guy. I miss that Dude

Why is this so hard to believe? Why would someone go to such great depths to make up a story where he barely had any Interaction with him? You don’t think fans from the past use KZfaq or go into the comments on a video of a famous wrestler that died in an infamous way that has millions of views? I’ve shook Chris benoits hand before and briefly met him if I told you that are you going to tell me I’m Chris Benoit himself? Seriously ...I get people make up stuff but people need to stop this shit where they think people are lying all the time

As opposed to a "necessary" death in wrestling? I don't anyone should die in or around the ring, and no one should die because of their life as a wrestler, yet WWE doesn't think so. They're all "independent contractors" so they're "independent" from giving a shit about them beyond what hurts their corporate image. I hate this company.

@@t--iq4mo ~cue sarcasm~ Yeah, that's why he made the whole matter about himself yet again when trying to extort Vince out of more money, only for Vince to renege on the originally promised amount all because of Bret's unprofessional outburst (no matter how bitterly valid it still remains to this day) & consequently, only give the family only 2 million out of the multiple millions reported that he initially claimed to give them. ~end sarcasm~ Never mind that Bret, much like Davy Boy Smith did in 1999 (which caused friction between himself, Bret & Dynamite Kid [better known nowadays as Chris Benoit's direct influence & a genuine ticking time bomb in his own right who took his own life a few years back]), surprisingly came back to the WWE in 2006, doing so for what he's since said was "blood money" (that is, money the company still has yet to pay the divided Hart family for compensation) & "legacy" (as in, he was afraid of being forgotten, so he came back with his tail between his legs & even verbally derided justified widow Martha on the illegally-produced & released _Owen Hart: Hart of Gold_ DVD, on which WWE management also lied about -and Bret stayed curiously silent on the topic to boot - Owen deciding to stay in the Federation when everyone & their grandmother's dog knows that Owen wanted out of wrestling entirely by 1999, as he was keen on finishing his career alongside "The Hitman", "British Bulldog" & "The Anvil" in WCW [following the sudden death of "Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman & the subsequent asshole move by Mr. McMahon to borderline "grill" Pillman's grieving widow Melanie about the sudden death of her husband on the RAW IS WAR immediately after the events of the prior evening's Badd Blood 1997 pay-per-view, since Melanie was essentially leeching off of Pillman's wrestling income & was otherwise, cheating the American government's legal system by claiming welfare on top of that, yet Mr. McMahon didn't even give her the courtesy of having 24 hours to process the tragic news, let alone let her decide to do an interview on the subject, as he instead seeming chose for her, given that she was now indebted to his business after Pillman had died], but Mr. McMahon personally rejiggered Owen's contract to forcibly prohibit him from leaving) & ultimately, WWE is 100% legally liable/responsible/to blame/at fault for Owen's sad, unfortunate passing, all for a stupid stunt (one that not only was yet another cheap pot shot against the self-imploding WCW competition, but the whole Blue Blazer revival made Owen into a comedy laughingstock when he was already over by his famous namesake & brilliant in-ring skills alone).

@AngryBlack No, I am not. I'm just someone with a sensible mindset who knows that WWE is legally responsible for what happened & as such, I duly respect Martha's personal decision to NOT let the company whose gross negligence killed her husband & father to her children during their formative years (all off a unnecessarily stupid stunt entrance [which was, in equal parts, meant to lampoon the self-imploding WCW competition meanwhile also simultaneously embarrassing as well as punishing Owen by making him out to be a hapless buffoon superhero wannabe laughingstock played for cheap laughs during the specific "darker & edgier" anti-authority era that actively insults the clean-cut babyface persona & its corresponding cliches in favor of the more grounded & rebellious anti-hero that refuses to take BS from anybody] gone horrifically wrong) make any sort of sleazy profit off of Owen's humanitarian good nature & his legacy as one of the unsung greats.

Yes he did, he fell 78 feet from the catwalk in the rafters after being improperly strapped to the unsafe & untested 6 pound trick release by his chest rather his waist & back as per correct harness safety protocol and inadvertently let himself go whilst fumbling with the billowing cape of the blue blazer outfit that had flown from behind to obstruct his vision, collided chest first with the ring rope nearest the corner turnbuckle, receiving both a broken neck & blunt force chest trauma from the force of impact as his loose foot blew past referee jimmy korderas & upon attempting to sit up to get his bearings, Owen immediately collapsed dead where he lay, having severed his aorta in his ruptured chest that was connected to his broken neck to cause near-instant mass internal bleeding; The only reason he wasn't declared dead on the spot is because to qualify as dead, the deceased have to be examined by legally-certified medical physicians & a coroner. The deceased cannot be declared dead by mere emergency medical trainees that are unqualified to do much past standard CPR, so he was pretty much dead-on-arrival upon entering the hospital near Kemper arena.

I will never forget the look that Jim Ross had on his face when they came back from the promo for the match between Owen and Godfather. Lawler was nowhere to be found on television. Everybody in the room with me went silent. It was truly chilling. Then J.R. was left with the responsibility of telling the audience that Owen Hart was rushed to the hospital and had passed away. I was shocked. My shock remained for the rest of the night as WWE for some reason finished the ppv.

Owen's time at the top came immediately after the steroid scandal; the company was at a low point. This means that most people do not see Owen's potential. They see him as a friendly midcarder. His promos were at times jumbled, but they always got the point across. Not every wrestler should be as articulate as Jake the Snake. Owen's death overshadows a career most would kill for, and some amazing matches and angles.

well you missed a lot then. It was showing the promo then a big sound. Then dark for a moment because the promo ended. You can see the camera scanning the crowd and they are cheering. They obviously didn't understand. The house lights go up. Then back to JR and no Lawler, saying something happened and it wasn't part of the show. Then panning around the crowd. Then back to the announcers. While we on PPV were told Owen had fallen and it wasn't part of the show then later that Owen had died.....no one there was told that. They left not knowing Owen had died.

I think Sting talked about it before, not that particular promo, but about how the monday after the incident happened, he was set to come from the rafters and he called bret to see if it was okay.

Yes. A classmate of mine who was a huge Wrestling fan had downloaded from Napster and shared with me the file on Real Player via email. It was only about 4 seconds long, VERY poor quality at 144p 10 FPS(In 1999, Internet Videos had average 240p 40 FPS), Dimmed Arena, Poor Noise Frequency, and extremely grainy. In the 4 second footage, you hear a combination of different sounds, The Crowd cheering, Someone or Owen yelling "Outta of the Way!" and Blue Blazer's theme just starting. The moment he falls, you see what looks like a silhouetted dummy falling VERY rapidly into the ring with the final frame and millisecond of the video ending with a loud THUD. Because the lighting is extremely abysmal, the Camcorder footage grainy and with poor quality, you can't really make out what's Falling. Again, it looks like a Shadowed Dummy. The video itself I recall being confusing because you can't tell if the object falling is a Human or Dummy and because of all of the live sounds and voices, you can only faintly hear what sounds like Owen shouting. There's only one thing unsettling about the footage. It happens SO FAST, its like you blinked. Everything occurs simultaneously. During the Summer of 1999, the file was also on The Wrestling Forum website and was also discussed on the Online World of Wrestling site. Snuff Sites LiveLeak and Faces of Death.com had attempted to retrieve the file and were promised it, but suddenly in September 1999, TWF ordered the file to be deleted from the site, and Napster themselves also suddenly removed it. Nobody tried copying it or compressing or duplicating it. The File simply vanished. It's been lost through time. Regarding if WWF/WWE has footage of the fall. I highly doubt it since, Jackson,Co,MO public officials recall WWF's Titantron and Arena Catwalk having very hazardous conditions. The Catwalk was flimsy and there weren't ANY Camera Equipment installed anywhere near both areas. And the main Bird's Eye View Cameras that dolly around the Arena Crowd were turned off since JR was reading the script from the Teleprompter just as the Title card is displayed on the Screen. The fall happens as soon as JR finishes this sentence "He claims not to be the Blue Blazer, but we know its Owen, we know he's the Blue Blazer......." the THUD is heard as soon as the Promo begins, within 5 seconds after JR finishes his sentence and the instant the promo official begins. The County itself fully supported Martha Hart's Case. Owen's Stunt Chaperone told her that he saw the whole thing occur and quote "Was Paralyzed and absolutely terrified when he fell". I call WWF/WWE's bluff when they claim to have footage of the fall. Because I suspect that of being a total lie. They didn't know it was going to happen and again had VERY questionable stunt safety precautions. I DO know that footage of AFTER the fall DOES exist. as soon as the first part of the promo ends, the lights are turned back on and crowdgoers do recall Jim Koteras waving and gesturing for EMTs and Jerry holding and tending to Owen in the ring while JR breaks character and appears alarmed and frantic. The Cameras then point to the Ring, except the broadcast ones as JR tries desperately to inform the audience at home that what just happened was not an Angle, not a Kayfabe, and not part of the Show. He tells the audience that the cameras will not show what's going on. While JR is talking, a Latina Teen who looks my age at the time, looking confused, hand gestures what just happened by "Him pulling his finger down horizontally and then crossing his neck with his hand". Meaning he just saw what happened and is sure that Owen Hart is dead.

Of him hitting the ring. Not of him falling tho. No one knew he was coming from the ceiling and it was dark. Owen did a practice run with vince standing in the ring. After the practice run, Vince had them change the clip and not connect a backup safety clip in case it failed. He did this because he said Owen took too much time getting out of the harness with both of them clipped. It took Owen almost a minute to get out of it during the test run. That was too long for vince so he just changed it up and no backup safety clip. Bet you 1000 to 1 that Owen had no idea he did this either. Since there was no test run with the new clip they didn't know that it was the wrong clip. Owen was clipped with a mast clip set to release under 6 lbs of pressure. Owen weighed 227 that night. So what happened was he stepped off the platform in the dark as his promo was ending, the clip immediately released, and he fell 100 feet into the turn buckle and then onto the ring. 100% vince's fault. He should have had a safety line in case anything went wrong. Sting did. vince cheaped out with the techs, equipment, and with the safety. It cost Owen his life.

I was 10 yrs old and she was 8 and we just started getting into wrestling. You could see the ring and a bunch of people but you couldn't tell what happened. All you could hear was, "there's been an accident!" Then it cut to the promo of him telling kids to, "say their prayers and take your vitamins," then cutting back to JR announcing his death. It was our first experience with death and it left a deep impression on us. We didn't watch the rest of the ppv. We had school in the morning so we had to go to bed. So we said our prayers, took our flintstone vitamins, and cried ourselves to sleep that night. R.I.P. Owen Hart

It also seems unlikely due to the fact that Max Mini was already working angles with Mini Nova that exact week. *Jimmy Korderas said that he only felt Owen brush Lightly past him, and originally thought it was a fan who had tried to throw something in the ring *J.R did not announce Owen's death immediately after the pre-tape. The death announcement didn't take place for about another 45 minutes thereafter

Spanish commentators are required to keep open mics during promos to do simultaneous interpreting. You can hear them freak out because of Owen's fall just a few seconds after the promo started. You can even hear Owen hitting the ring very faintly, along with some reactions of the crowd. I think they just added that interview to finish figuring out what to do, to buy some time.

The quick rush of fear, anger and regret. It's really not fair. RIP Owen. Coincidentally I started watching wrestling a few months after Over the Edge and didn't know about Owen until I grew up a little and watched some of the mid 90s PPVs. He was always fun to watch and although he didn't have his run at the top, he'll always be remembered fondly by fans during that time period. He was a good person too. either that or Mini would have broken Owen's fall if he was in front of him. Regardless, thats shameful that Russo would even conjure up such a stupid stunt, and even more ridiculous that Vince would sign off on it.

This shit still makes me tear up, I remember I was 11 years old and I was doing homework(while watching smart guy so it was like 7:30 ish) because I had school the next day and my older brother came rushing in and told me that Owen Hart had died, he wasn't watching the pay-per-view but he was on the phone with a friend who was watching it live and I couldn't believe it, a wrestling death wouldn't affect me that bad again until the Chris Benoit tragedy

My older was cousin saw it happen live that night, I asked him about and he said he could barely watch wrestling after, it was horribly traumatizing to witness a man dying, especially at the age of 9.

obviously giving fans what they paid for was more important to WWE.....I think they should have ended the pay PPV.... even if it ment giving refunds to fans... I think a person loseing his life in a accident is more important then continueing a PPV.

I was 10 in the upper deck with my older brother and cousin. i saw it all it looked fake like a test dummy was dropped off. Until he hit the top rope hit the mat and lifted his head up off the mat. I was 10 and I remember every bit of that. Ill never forget my brother and cousin trying to make me think nothing happened. How they tried to go buy me memorabilia a shirt and title belt so I didn't go home scared and shook up to my parents and wouldn't be able to go anymore. But my parents recorded and watched every KC event we went to just in case we were on tv. They knew more then us at the time. Weird so many years later seeing this. A lot of people want and search for the video since I was 10 I've had that video play in my head what everyone looks for I still see to this day. R.I.P Owen

I watched that pay per view. It was surreal. If my memory serves me correctly the camera showed him coming down but did not show him hit. It then went to the crowd when the harness broke. For the life of me I don’t think they showed him hitting but now that I think of it... I’m not sure. I do kind of vaguely remembering seeing Lawler wave for the paramedics. And then it went to prerecorded comments by Owen. Then Lawler and Ross commentary talking about how Owen Hart has died. The whole room sat in stunned silence

I was there at Nassau Colisuem when Draz (Puke) broke his neck from D-Lo Brown's walking powerbomb. The Rock and Mankind did an encore at the end of the show because of the delay earlier from said accident, the crowd was completely insensitive and chanted boring and other childish things while the paramedics were working on the hurt wrestler

I don't blame Martha Hart for feeling the way she does about the WWE. Owen Hart's death was a result of gross negligence. Vince wanted the stunt done a certain way and didn't care that the quick-release equipment was far more dangerous and risky. Vince was also too insensitive to stop the show after the tragedy the crowd just witnessed. This was Vince's low point and he will forever have blood on his hands for pushing Owen into doing an unnecessary stunt and not putting his safety first by using the most dangerous equipment.

As a 6 year old kid in the crowd on this night I can honestly say that at the time I didn't understand how bad this actually was. I had one of those little hand held TVs in my hand thinking I could find a channel to hear the commentary(6 years old at the time. I now know there was no way.) I heard people gasping around me and I looked up too see him crash into the turnbuckle then hit the mat. My dad said it was all apart of the show when the EMTs stretchered him out. I wish he could've gave a thumbs up sign to prove he was okay. I now realize even though his eyes were open he was already gone. It wasn't until the next night on the tribute Raw show that I realized he died.

I remember being in 6th grade when my parents took me to Kansas City to see my first ever and only wrestling event. When that happened it was extremely confusing not just me being I was that young but to everybody. Everything went sort of quiet...you weren't quite sure if it was real. I mean deep down you were telling yourself "This is just part of the show...I hope that was part of the show." Then I remembered the look on my father's face... Something bad happened that wasn't supposed to. One thing that will always stay with me. That's too bad. I'll keep whoever affected in a prayer tonight.

When one considers how rich/wealthy Vince McMahon is, one missed PPV event is not going to make or break Vince or the company. PPV customers could've been given a "free credit" for the next PPV ONLY, & those in attendance could've received a full refund for the event. But to have the show still go on AFTER seeing a employee plummet to his death, just goes too show just how big a Jackass Vince McMahon really is. Nuff said.

Since he never actually gave them the $93 million, he shouldn't have sued the manufacturer. Plus, it wasn't designed for use in rappelling. How'd he win that lawsuit? You're never legally responsible for a third party using your product in a way it wasn't designed for.
