Attitude Era USA Network Barry Diller needs to be discussed more in Monday Night Wars documentaries. He was actually far more valuable than Vince Russo, and even the McMahons, when it came to the Attitude Era ratings turnaround. Things like the pole dancing Highway to Hell music video never would've been approved by the McMahons without Diller. He previously let Saturday Night's Main Event air on Fox when he was head of Fox TV, so the McMahons also need to stop covering up how long they've been acquainted with the Mr. Burns inspiration.

is shows wwe was never danger going out business worst case they would have been 2nd ratings but they were beating wwe house show and ppv live gate. 1996 was one their best years house shows thank to bret Time for some number crunching, as Dave looks at both WWF and WCW and compares TV ratings and house show attendance numbers for the last 5 years in great detail. There's a lot of numbers and stuff here but I'll try to sum it up easily. When it comes to WCW, they're obviously in the midst of their hottest run ever. But there's a misconception that WCW winning the cable ratings war is some new thing, when in reality, WCW has pretty much always beaten WWF in cable ratings, with the Saturday Night show beating early Raw and Prime Time ratings all the time, but they weren't in prime time. And no one really paid attention until the companies began going head-to-head on Monday nights. The truth is, yes, WCW is winning the war but the alleged "decline of WWF" is overrated. 1996 was WWF's strongest house show year since 1991, even though their TV ratings have hit new lows. But overall, WWF is still doing strong business everywhere else and TV ratings haven't shown to have that much effect on ticket sales. In fact, WWF's house show business grew at a faster rate than WCW's did last year and with increased ticket prices, their house show business became even more profitable. There's a perception from people who believe the Monday night ratings are the entire business and believe WWF is in trouble because they're losing the ratings war, but overall, they're still pretty strong (I find stuff like this interesting, because the revisionist version of history is that WCW damn near put WWF out of business until Vince heroically fought back and conquered his enemy. Reality is, they were never even remotely in danger of it and aside from TV ratings, they were doing their best business in years on every other front. Sure, they were a distant second in TV ratings but in all other aspects of the business, WCW was only barely winning).

@@HhhHhhh-nu4lm Reality is the WWF was indeed close to extinction. The WWE also needs to also start acknowledging that the USA Network was purchased during the ratings rebound and that the buyer was Barry Diller, the same individual who got Saturday Night's Main Event on Fox in 1992 when he was head of Fox TV.

Attitude Era had a killer main event roster (Austin, Rock, HHH, Mankind, Undertaker, Kane, etc.) but they also had a killer womens roster (Trish, Chyna, Lita, etc.), and killer midcard roster (Edge/Christian, Hardys, APA, etc.) and of course JR and Jerry Lawler. It's hilarious to me that they now act like the Attitude Era was a planned change and not just luck. Stone Cold was supposed to be a villain, but the fans loved it. WWE was bright enough to learn from that, heck, they pretty much had to, as they had sunk to try and get rating with midget wrestling. It took being on the verge of bankruptcy to make WWE listen to the crowds and realize that they determined who the real stars were. Shame WWE isn't that open to change any more...

You are so right. McMahon suggested the name Chilly McFreeze for Austin. And he wanted Foley to be Manson the Mutilator. Remember when Rocky Maivia was a "blue chipper"? They were running midget wrestling and the Godwinns well into the middle of 1997. They didn't have a clue. At some point, they just let DX do and say whatever they wanted and saw how the crowds responded. It took them another year to start consistently beating Nitro in the ratings but at that point, WCW was just running the nWo angle to the ground.

I remember as a kid in the 1990's about 12 when the Attitude Era commenced in 1997. I would watch MNR every Monday. Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Stone cold became my favorite wrestlers. Mankind became my "Never root against" wrestler My hatred for Vince was ignited. My fear of Undertaker and Kaine commenced. I started watching in 93' but it was 97' that I became a die hard Wrestling fan. From 1997 to 2003 was the time to be a WWE fan, those years were legendary. I highly doubt we will see a time like that again. Currently the WWE is going through a 94' moment, something must change..."Devon!!!! Get the Tables!!"

The video games , the action figures, the posters , it was another world I could escape into ... ahhhh nostalgia feels so good sometimes!

Yes, it was. Ruthless Aggression had far more wrestling in it than Attitude ever did. But both had clusterfuck storylines. Various attempts at incest (the basis behind Ken's over-the-top obsession with his promiscuous on-screen sister Ryan's terrible taste in men, Beaver Cleavage, Paul Burchill & his sister Katie Leigh who spent most of their time literally fawning over each other by claiming how each of them was perfect and that there was no one else who could ever replace them, Dawn Marie making out with storyline stepdaughter Torrie Wilson after Torrie's father and Dawn Marie's sugar daddy Al Wilson kicked the bucket mid-angle, the genesis of the illegitimate son storyline where real-life father Vince wanted to be baby-daddy to real-life daughter Stephanie's baby, as Stephanie was pregnant with her and Triple H's first child in 2006 when the bastard child idea was first conceived), "I choppy choppy your pee pee" involving Val Venis the porn star and Japanese ethnic stereotype heel faction Kaientai whose only 2 remaining members Taka Michinoku (after whom the Michinoku driver was named) and Sho Funaki were made into glorified jobber fodder for randy pedophile Jerry "The King" Lawler to make fun of by confusing them for Chinese people 'cause ASIANS and making slanty-eyed buck-toothed mangled English jokes aplenty, making fun of Hawk's substance abuse issues just as WCW was doing by making fun of Scott Hall as well, OWEN HART dying on LIVE PPV, the terrible objectification of women, the Katie Vick necrophilia feud between Triple H & Kane which ultimately cost Kane not only his mask but the entirety of his character as a monstrous demon from the fiery depths of Hell (as any attempt to return to this afterward would end poorly, as the recent "Demon" Kane return has proven), the racist burial of Booker T by Triple H at WrestleMania 19, Mr. McMahon and the demonic seed from his loins Shane O' Mac vs a born-again "H.B.K" Shawn Michaels...and GOD in a glorified piece of literal holy shit-on-a-stick handicap match that insults religious fans of the "sport", etc.

In lil ol' New Zealand where I'm from "Superstars of Wrestling" premiered on our screens back in 1988 & I was hooked.I was 18 years old. Then 3 years later the bosses of tv programming removed it due to public outcry that it was too violent.Between 1991-1997 there was no wrestling at all on tv in our country but during those times I kept up with things by renting WWF videos. In 1997 I rented a video with a blue cover with Sean Michaels face on it & the title"D Generation X" & was blown away with that ppv. Soon after, "Raw is War" appeared on our tv screens on Saturday nights. In the USA,you guys were getting a 2 hour show(I think). We were getting one hour.Frustrating, but better than nothing. And because I had kept up all those years through video,it was like I had never been away so that was good. We've had WWE wrestling on tv ever since but my attention faded somewhat by 2011.I still purchase the box sets each year(I have 2011 through to 2016 so far & have watched them all a couple times & will buy the rest as they come out). But I don't watch the current shows on tv like I used to.It makes me a little sad.I have nothing but fond memories of the years I did spend watching Raw & Smackdown & all the various ppv's throughout the years but it is the "Attitude Era" without a shadow of a doubt that will always be,for me, the greatest days of wrasslin' viewing pleasure.
