2013-04-16 - CSA Astronaut Chris Hadfield performed a simple science experiment designed by grade 10 Lockview High School students Kendra Lemke and Meredith Faulkner. The students from Fall River, Nova Scotia won a national science contest held by the Canadian Space Agency with their experiment on surface tension in space using a wet washcloth.

Haha at least someone is paying attention! Fortunately we have Anna to explain what he means I don’t know how she knows but okay we can just trust her judgement.. So when he was squirting that water out the bag what was stopping him from having another bag to squirt into? Yet it’s perfectly safe in a space station to have water floating around with all that electricity but if you drop your phone, tv, computer, remote, microwave or anything else electrical in water they almost instantly cut out and damage whatever it is. It must only be on earth that water and electricity don’t mix, I think in space they must go hand in hand. I don’t see why anyone could doubt that this actually isn’t in space 😂😂

The microphone goes down because he pushed it ever so slightly downwards when he released it. However, your'e right that there is "gravity in space". It is the earth's gravity that keeps the ISS in orbit instead of flying off into space. But from the perspective of the interior of the ISS, there is no gravitational acceleration relative to any other part of the ISS.

When the squirting water is aimed directly at the cloth, it looks like a magic trick. The water hits the cloth and seems to disappear. Of course, it is being absorbed, but you don't see the absorption because of the wrinkles and angle. Love the unintentional Magic tricks!

As others have said this was in their free time. Additionally this was an educational exercise to help get kids interested in science where they answered questions that were asked by school kids. If you don't feel that educating and informing children about science and about space is a good use of time and money then you are a terribly misinformed and short sighted individual.

This is a demonstration for those of us who are curious about how water reacts in space, the ISS in particular. People like us ask the astronauts for a demonstration and they deliver. Pretty darn awesome of them to take the time out of their day to give us a glimpse of what it's like to be completely weightless.
