This reminds me of the Musashi quote: "When one understands the way broadly, one sees it in all things." Beautiful block of instruction, Roy!

I've long thought that Aikido was a great "supplemental" martial art. Yeah it's not ideal if it's your primary discipline but something to train on the side for some extra techniques I think it could be valuable.

As a blue belt in the early 1990's, I once used my limited aikido knowledge to tap a purple belt and he angrily told me I couldn't do that. I obviously just caught him off guard and he then proceeded to pummel me! I wish I had questioned my instructor, Roger Machado about it (not the pummelling...but using the aikido technique). I enjoyed this video immensely.

@@mr.monitor. My thoughts, exactly! That's what I told the guy..."I made you tap, didn't I?" Hence the beatdown! ;o)

@Bill Hood its usually good to avoid training with anyone that gets mad because they tapped 🤣. They always have an excuse or say something like " goddamn I can't believe you would put me in a foot lock, wrist lock even though they know it's part of it and would do the same to you if they thought of it first 😅

Usually if I get caught off guard and get tapped by somebody and I'm not sure what they did I'll ask them maybe I can learn to adapt it too but I'm currently a blue belt soni have a long way to go

Love it !! For the last technique would you still be able to grab uke's wrist if his grip was lower at the collar as opposed to higher and closer to your neck as you have shown here ?

I adore Roy and his Nice Bjj technics but the enter of his kotegaeshi movement his ineficient and vers risky despite the fact that this version is the most popular! There is a more efficient way to do this technic.

Actually, you can use it on a closed fist, since kote gaeshi was originally a weapon disarm technique. It was meant to wristlock a sword or knife welding hand. The reason it doesn't work against most modern boxing punches is because the angle of the fist, the timing and energy behind throwing a punch is totally different from thrusting or stabbing with a knife. And that requires a different set of footwork and leverage. This is something that takes lots of training and experience to get right.

Only problem here is having a compliant uke that won't yank their hand away. Other than that, seems legit.
@Polentaccio
@Polentaccio Жыл бұрын
It's the principle.. stepping over the head locks him in just enough to crank the arm on the standing lock but yeah people yank their arms away. But in reality, you are stepping down on that face with your heel. That should give you enough time. I like the way Roy blends his old school knowledge with BJJ.
