🌟 Most resume advice from the internet is subjective since there is no "one-size-fits-all." But using Austin Belcak's analysis of 125,484 resumes, I share 5 Golden Rules on how to Write an Incredible Resume in 2021.
Whether you're making a resume for your first job, or improving upon a good resume you already have been using for years, it's very important to get the basics principles right before moving on to fancier resume writing tips.
🤔 So how do write a resume or make a strong CV? Make sure your LinkedIn profile is added to your resume, match relevant keywords by using a Word Cloud on the job description, include measurable results to differentiate yourself from others, keep your resume between 475-600 words in length, and avoid buzzwords at all costs! Who knew writing a good resume would be so simple? 😉
All jokes aside, this video contains practical resume writing tips following each one of Austin's findings, and I walk you through each of the 5 Golden Rules so you know the do's and dont's about writing a resume 💯

I have some questions: 1. I’ve been rejected from about 50 interviews. (In the last one they found the excuse that I could have given more examples. There must have been 20 to 30 perfectly given interviews with no feedback at all. The feedback I got from a lot of them is that they went for another candidate). 2. Before the pandemic it only took around 4 interviews to secure a new role 3. I went to a top business school and have half a decade of experience working for blue chip companies 4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years* *Is it discrimination? Is it bias because there is money involved? I would just like to know what is going on as I’m being forced to retire early abroad/take a career break in the summer*..

Hi, Jeff! I’m Zoe, a fresh graduate preparing for the application for a job at Google. Many thanks for your tips on the resume. They are well-organized, clearly stated, and presented with details. With your tips and the referral of a google employee, my resume was successfully spotted by the recruiter just one-day after I applied. I just want to comment and say how grateful I am. I'll continue to watch other videos of yours to learn how to pass the interview. Hopefully, I can be a Googler like you.

Hey Jeff-- just found your channel and love the production level + useful content of these videos! Do you think you can make a video about mental models (i.e. How to decide between two job offers that equally have their own pros and cons?) A better way of making important decisions versus just a typical pros/cons list... For instance, as a fresh grad: a full-time offer with good pay but less appealing industry VS a paid internship in the exact industry you want, but the potential for full-time is not guaranteed?

Hi Michelle, thanks so much for the comment! Wow, this is actually a really good idea - and funnily enough I have a similar topic planned for a future Skillshare course (for free of course). In the meantime though I would recommend thinking about how this immediate opportunity helps you build SKILLSETS that you can apply to your "dream" role down the line 😉

Great tips Jeff. Just to add to your point of measurable metrics - there is a rule followed in the hiring world called the STAR approach (i.e. how you should structure your bullet points) ... Situation, Task, Action, Result. In one paragraph describe the situation, the task that is required in the situation, the action you took and the result (measurable) that you attained. It works like a charm :)

@@mikey7267 Indeed, the STAR approach is suited for the interview, however, it doesn't require a paragraph. I have successfully used it in bullet points that are two lines max in resumes. The important thing is using the elements to give a comprehensive display of one's experience.

My biggest frustration is the summary and education history. I’m a recent university drop out and in a limbo about future careers, but I have an interest in sectors that don’t coincide with my degree. How do I tailor my summary and also account for leaving university early? Loved the video!!
@johnspence8141

MOST people go into jobs that have nothing to do with their education, other than maybe very specific stems educations. If you look at peoples careers versus what they studied, its not even close. As for leaving early, I'm not sure it will pop up unless you point it out. And if so, you can phrase it as "I left University to pursue career interests, with the intent to return at a later date." Not sure if that helps

Certain jobs will often just look for some kind of college degree/credits. My neighbor in Homeland Security had a dispatch position offered to and accepted by a woman with a bachelor's in _zoology._ She had no other experience in the field. It's not the rule but it's not exactly a fluke either. Just let them know what education you do have and follow John's advice. Best of luck!

Try tailoring this for the job you're applying for. For some jobs you might need to highlight some areas, for other jobs other areas. What you should be trying to do is to match up your experience and skills to what they say they need on the job ad. Any further explanation can be made in the interview stage.
