Songwriter Travis Meadows has written songs for country artists including Eric Church, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr. and Kenny Chesney. In this interview, Travis shares insights into how to write better songs by “writing what you know,” crafting a chorus message, and supporting that message with a strong and visual verse.
When the tendency is to try to write what we think others want to hear, a full surrender to our own artistic voice can be the best medicine - and the key to finally getting heard. Use these tips to write more authentic songs.
Travis is hosting daily livestreams on FB during this time of uncertainty with Coronavirus. As a songwriter deeply connected to the trials and tribulations of creative spirits, Travis will be answering questions and providing advice and support for those in the music industry. I know this is old, but it's new to me. Thanks for this, I learn so much from listening to great writers like Travis talk about their experiences. Very inspiring!

What an incredibly touching and inspiring interview! I watched it in fits and starts. Travis is a beautiful human being, brimming with honesty and insight. As a lifelong creative professional, I really resonated with the 'hungry' idea; a truly foundational principle for us who seek to venture into the unknown.

I was meant to watch this video. It made me cry. I realize I'm not crazy for doing what I do. I write songs about MY experiences, feelings, conversations, and things I hear others say. Songs come from nowhere, I don't know where they come from. It's amazing how they evolve from one idea, a feeling. I love doing what I do. I'm only just starting to take myself seriously, regarding songwriting. Thank you so much for this video. It is very inspiring, uplifting, life changing. 🎶🎸🎶. Now all I need to do is get some like minded people to work with me. Wish me luck. 🙏🏻

Perhaps you don’t need any luck to get to your end goals. It may just start with intention. Let your intentions be known to the universe. Someone might just be listening with intention as well. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Thanks. Happy to find content like this. If I was Travis, I would write a song about light weight lenses, which dont slide down the nose. About friction behind ears.

Thank you, Andrea and Travis for such an inspiring interview. I can totally relate to the Write What You Know theme. Travis, the depth of your lyric is overflowing with honesty. Very impressive. Andrea, you have such a good way of exchanging views that definitely help us songwriters think about as we move forward with our music. During these difficult days please be safe. I sincerely wish you both all the best!

Great interview! I really appreciate that you gave Travis alot of room to speak. Lots of great concepts, and ideas to process here. But I really loved the part about writing for yourself, and not caring about what you think the industry might want to hear. Very insightful. Thanks for sharing this!

Following my instincts lead me here eventually (with a big help of the KZfaq algorithm). I needed to find this community for me personally yet also for a dear friend of mine. Thank you so much for this content. There is indeed so much in common between Travis’ life and my own. Minus his ability to master instruments, songwriting, singing and his career in music. He is a highly relatable human. Andrea, we are in constant need of teachers who have mastered the art of expression. You are among the very best. I am a new fan and subscriber. I’m all buckled up for the ride. Be impeccable with your word. Do not take anything personally. Do not make any assumptions. Always do your best. Be skeptical but lean in.

Thank you for this video! When I was in graduate school for my MFA in writing (I am also a songwriter), author Grace Paley told us to write what we DON'T know about what we know. In other words, branch out to new ideas while grounding yourself in the familiar. This has proven to be golden advice as a writer and songwriter!

Wow! This grabbed me and just wouldn't let go! I couldn't stop watching. I love how Travis's songwriting techniques flows out of what he has (needs?!) to say...not the other way around. So insightful and vulnerable.

Ouch, they used to say 5 years in Nashville. It is a tough town. Funny thing is, many number one hits got turned down by pluggers/publishers for years. The music "business" is part of the problem. Not only a Nashville issue.

Thank you. Was looking up Travis, checking up on his well being after somewhat making his acquaintance through Eric Church lol. Living in NC, don’t know either one, knew just enough to care. This is enough to say he’s doing good and keep praying. Yes, I’m one of “those” people. 🤪 or 😇 idk or idc ;) They don’t know me btw haha. I’m just like an old momma bear checking on cubs haha.
