Alphasmarts are great for that, but they can be hard to find nowadays! You can search for used ones on amazon and ebay.

The Pomera Pm30 or Pm100 is pretty much what you are talking about although it does cost significantly more.

@@wynona_youtube To be honest, for the prices they demand (some over 500 bucks) for the Pomera or similar devices you can get an old first gen iPad with Keyboard dock, that you could use offline. Or a old Palm / Handspring PDA with Keyboard dock. I have fond memories of Using my Handspring Visor Pro in a keyboard dock during meetings.

I think you need a combination approach. A small LCD panel for direct entry work, with an e-ink display for older text.

Just load the text into a word processor for editing. This was always intending for drafting and use in schools for children who had problems with writing.

@@isegrim1978 I just got a King Jim Pomera PM100 for 250 on Amazon. It’s more expensive than a used Neo 2 but it’s a universe away from the asking price of the Astrohaus devices.

It's hard to find new ones as they are not being made anymore. However you should still be able to find one second hand through eBay or Amazon!

Just bought two for $50 on eBay. A ton on there.

I'm sorry for the late reply, I'm just now seeing your comment! On the Alphasmart Neo, I'm not sure there is a way to do that. Maybe with the Dana? Since it's a step up?

You need a companion software for it.

If you download the "Get Utility", you can transfer text from "Macintosh or a PC running Windows to a NEO, AlphaSmart 3000, or earlier models." You can find that on software.informer.com. It's a few extra steps, but it beats the heck out of manually typing when there's something you want to edit

You need the Neo Manager. Just google "alphasmart Neo Manager" (without quotation marks) and go to the renlearn site. You'll find a download and a manual which should tell you how to use it.

@@JDRobinson_author - yup, it's just called Neo. I've had mine for 16 years. Still going strong! They would have full page ads for them in Writer's Digest. That's how I got mine.

@@JDRobinson_author I didn’t either till a friend told me what the back buttons were for. I only knew the download one, since my Dana didn’t come with an instruction book.

The only real downside to the Dana is it eats batteries, whereas the Neo will play for a year on one set. (Always ensure the back-up cell battery is changed every few years.)

No, not that I've found. I usually will make markers in the text like using / text/ to italicized or * text * for bold, to remind me of formating choices once I upload it to my computer.

I don't see why not, as long as you have a USB input on your Chromebook

It's not going to appear when you plug it in. You'll need to open that program separately. You can use anything from Microsoft Word, Mac Pages, Notepad, or even something like Google Docs.

You can download the manager software and reload the applet if needed

There's an option in the settings menu. So instead of just pushing the on button, I have to push another button and the on button at the same time for it to turn on.

I've not tried to attach it directly to a printer, and I'm not sure how that would work. You could always transfer to a computer then print it. As for the display, the lines of text depend on how big you've set the font size to, I usually have it set to 4 or 5 lines showing, but it makes the font small. You can also check out the Freewrite. It's much more expensive, but they are a newer and better quality version of this sort of device.

These are only around £50.

@@muskndusk that's funny I just read this comment I have one now. Must've bought it around the time of this comment can't remember. I love it. If you go to my videos you'll see that I actually use it but I use an ereader as a companion to it

No, I painted mine after I bought it.

I took a moment to review my alphasmart's keyboard, and it's a standard QWERTY keyboard. It does not have a special key or character for ñ. But this could be something that you find and replace in editing once you transfer your work to a regular computer.

Special characters are made with the Option-key. Hold down the option-key and type n and then n again, or shift-N. A list is in the manual on page 237.
