Honestly even the best actors, directors, and special effects can’t save a bad script. Writers are important. Without them we don’t have original movies, and tv shows that are any good. Negotiate with them! Maybe you have to pay an actor or director a little bit less. It’s worth it.

@@kurtshastany1945 so just cause they make more than you at your regular non Hollywood job were they have to pay dues, fees to lawyers, among other stuff aside from rent and bills they should what not ask to be paid a fair wage. The salary expectations for you don't reflect that of those of writers. Not all writers make 5000 a week many make way less if they are lucky. I don't think they make alot of money. I think most of them do not produce quality work deserving of a raise . And alot of my favorite shows has way less than 6 writers. Babylon 5 , Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fire Fly , Angel . Some of the early Dr Who . Even Star Trek's most popular episode Trouble With Tribbles was written by a single fan in a contest. The union demand of having dead weight writing staff on the next Babylon 5 reboot where the show runner has already written half or more of the scripts it is a completely unreasonable demand.
@isaaclopez-eb6yg
@isaaclopez-eb6yg Жыл бұрын
@@paulalbamonte4756 those demands as far as I know are because they want to ensure job security. It would suck if you were hired for a new job let say until the end of the summer but suddenly the hire ups end up letting all the writers go after just a few weeks without warning. That means the pay they were going to get has been considerably reduced
@paulalbamonte4756
@paulalbamonte4756 Жыл бұрын
@isaac lopez The perception is the demand they hire and pay 4 more writers because the cotracts says so even if two writers including the show runner have already written all the scripts. In as season of Babylon 5 JMS wrote about 20 of the 22 or so episodes. The guild is trying to force the hiring of 4 union writers to do nothing but run up production costs in salary. Yes Minister and Prime Minster largely written by 2 guys . They should be permitted not to hire dead weight in the first place . All European T V show models are finite runs in which everything is written before any shooting by 1-3 people and 1 or 2 is kept for needed rewrites during production . By necessity American TV has to start using that business model soon the contract is based on the perpetuation of the old model that is dying out .

If you get hired as a “staff” writer on a series , you should be paid a fair staff salary. Writing and writers work as a team. Trying to do away with that and only pay people as a day to day freelancer who work on shows is wrong. You can’t survive doing that. This is their career and livelihoods. And I can’t stand uninformed people who try to shame people who want to be in this business and just say “Get a new job” That’s basically degrading the art of being a writer. I know not everyone can make it doing what they dream of doing, but for those who do make it, they should be compensated fairly.

This strike must be very hard on the writers themselves, who are already living on the edge financially from what you say. That they are going for it anyway shows both how important fair pay and working conditions are to them, and the absolute resistance by the studios shows how little they value the writers. But we already knew too many studios don’t value good writing by real pros, as demonstrated by the many abysmal shows that have been dropping like bricks. It’s always bad stories, bad writing that is missing with those failed shows.
@lockekosta9014
@lockekosta9014 Жыл бұрын
You wonder why so many shows, movies and video games have piss poor writing and storytelling? It's because it's the first thing studios cheap out on. It's been that way for years - hell, decades! I wanted to be a writer at one point. Tried to pursue a career as one and for seven years paid my bills with my craft. But the fact of the matter is that very few people have any respect for writing as a craft. Anyone who can speak a language thinks they can write worth a damn and that writers are just doing the busy work they don't want to bother with. So they pay like shit and get what they pay for. The most infuriating thing was having people approach me with something they paid someone in India pennies to puke onto a page and then go, "Well all we need you to do is 'edit' this. That's a lot cheaper, right?" And I'm sure now with AI they're trying to do that to an even greater degree.

I just hope this situation gets fixed soon, saw news today that thankfully HOTD Season 2 is still going forward because it doesn't affect the writing but other projects not going forward blows. HOTD could still be messed up by this, if anything it's bad news to me they're moving forward. the whole freelancer/contract thing is just an excuse to give the worker as little benefit as possible. There are rules and laws about certain employee benefits like paid leave, healthcare, etc that completely don't apply at all to anyone who isn't technically a "full time" employee At the end of the day, hiring a full time employee costs more than hiring a contract worker, and so companies realise quickly on that if they can find creative ways to "re-classify" workers as contract workers, they save a bunch of costs. This famously happened with Uber and other ridesharing services and there's been lots of legal battles fought over workers getting misclassified.

This has come about due to the greed of many steps within the Entertainment industry. The sad thing is the PGA want their cake and eat it too. I get that but for those who are the actually engine of the Story telling genres, its truly a slap in the face. I would love to be a struggling writer but I am already a struggling musician trying to break into the industry and so my heart goes out to them. I writers room minimum sounds kind of ridiculous to me. Every show is different, and some shows, though rare, are written by the showrunners with no writers room. Others shows hire writers for episodes, but do not have an actual writers room. The showrunner just works directly with each writer of an episode. So this minimum requirement across the board would handcuff all shows to work in a more traditional sitcom sort of way, which keeps them from doing what works best for each individual show. I'm with the producers on that point at the very least.

The producers and directors who write are right alongside these guys. The ones who don't probably can't write for shit and need these people. Otherwise you end up with something like X-Men Origins Wolverine or Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. As for a freelance writer, yeah they could write episodes for a show sure. However, they'd be stepping on the WGA's toes and you don't want to do that. Because when this strike is over, and it WILL be over sooner or later, that freelance writer would be blacklisted from ever writing in Hollywood again.

This is the result of companies producing content vs enabling art. There's a calculation here made at the top that has devalued writers and treated story telling as a secondary or auxiliary to their product. This is the wrong decision and the calculation I suspect is making quick profit for executives but is unsustainable for the industry longterm. If you like writers - support them. If you don't like writers - support being paid a living wage for work and understand that writing will be better by people who aren't having their power shut off.

@groovciti
@groovciti Жыл бұрын
Yeah but Mike White is the exception. Most TV ideas are changed so much between the studio and the network from the original idea when it’s green lit you need a team to get the beat sheets, the outlines and scripts out. In the case of W LOTUS…. there’s no real new season start like on network TV. In the streaming basic cable era it’s very vague. ATLANTA went away for like 2 years after the second season. Mike White did write it all but he was given time to write those by himself. But the majority needs a room
@Amoraszune
@Amoraszune Жыл бұрын
@@groovciti Thanks for the answer. I realise it’s an exception, and a rare one at that. But it seems a good reason why the minimum rule cannot be absolute. I see what the WGA is going for, but they need to make room for exceptions where it is understood and agreed that the minimum rule does not need to apply, which I understand is paradoxical. As an art form those exceptions shouldn’t suffer from bureaucratisation. But the main idea behind the demand is clearly a good one!
