This came at literally the perfect moment. I've been sitting laying in my bed listening to music brainstorming ideas for a story that I've been working on, and next thing I know, there's a vid from the most handy-dandy channel out there showing me a rough "how-to" on story structure. Thanks guys!

Bear in mind though that this is so called primitive writing or storytelling. It is quite popular among screenwriters. Though there are way more ways to tell a story than Hero's Journey. Think Waiting for Godot by Beckett. Especially in the 20th century after WW2, when the world fundamentally changed, many writers did try to change the way how we tell stories. But Hero's Journey is a good start

I've been sitting on an idea for a short or even feature length script of a movie for a while. a few ideas surrounding a main concept, not knowing how to put it together. After watching this I started cranking out ideas one after the other and even entire scenes and am now piecing it all together into a full narrative. This video really helped immensely. Thank you so much.

I bought 101 when it first came out and it truly changed how I write. It made my writing more thoughtful, it really made me plan out set-ups and pay offs... I am currently working on a novel for a post-graduate program and everything in 101 still applies.

I really wish I went to college to learn this stuff. Now being in my late thirties it's a bit late but the things Seth touches on is what held me back from continuing my interest in writing as a kid/YoungAdult. I thought my mind one day having random ideas and thoughts about what I wanted to create was awesome and I'd go on these weeks long writing binges but then the ideas stopped flowing, I would look at the unorganized mess I had made and literally trash the whole thing!

Not all movies follow the "Hero's Journey" formula however. In fact if you follow it beat by beat you are very likely to end up with a generic screenplay that's been done a thousand times before. I have found that deviating from it from time to time will give interesting results. There's a book on screenwriting that was written by John Truby whose title I can't recall. It covers a much wider range of storytelling techniques than your average book on screenwriting. Highly recommended.

KissMyAsthma story structure is interesting because of all it's different beats. But the things that make a story interesting is how that story uniquely fills those story beats. Wonder Woman is actually a great example. It took many pieces of the heroes journey but completely subverted them so that most people wouldn't notice. I don't think all stories need to follow one particular structure, but I think they are recipes for emotional pay off. They don't need to be used but when used properly the story is that much stronger.

True, but the hero's journey isn't a bad place to start. Unless you have a very clear idea of a unique storytelling model you want to go with, starting with the hero's journey and then deciding which elements you want to subvert or play around with can be incredibly helpful.

If $55 is a lot of money to you for thirty minutes (which in reality is nothing) but you'd spend $1k on an iPhone......you've got some backward logic, the phone can do (X) but in regards to education. That shits pricless.

jedielliott Make the film. Send it to various film festivals, if your content is good enough then it will get the attention in the eyes of various indie studio executives who are there at films festivals to examine which movie to distribute. Or else try to find production contacts from google, go at their office and try to pitch the movie straight up.
