Write a better Meet Cute ►► bit.ly/2nVQGDs
In this video essay and scene analysis, we’re going to go over some screenwriting techniques that will help you write your own meet cutes in any type of script or genre, whether it be a romantic comedy, romance movie, or really any kind of film.
Meet cutes are a necessary component of every romantic film. They are mostly found in Romantic Comedies but they can be used in any genre. If you’re writing a script with romantic characters, you’ll need to know how to craft an effective first encounter.
But how do you go about writing an original and engaging meet cute?
In this video, we’ll analyze 4 different types of meet cutes based their mutual attraction, mutual repulsion, or any combination of the two.
The PULL/PULL...love at first sight.
The PUSH/PUSH...hate at first sight.
The PULL/PUSH...one is interested, one is not.
The NEUTRAL/NERVOUS...one is oblivious, the other is awkward.
Our screenwriting tips come from some of the best romantic movies of all time, which include love at first sight in movies. You’ll learn romance writing for movies and television with this filmmaking and screenwriting video essay. We show you great meet cute examples from movies and scripts so you can learn these important screenwriting tips.
When you understand the various elements that go into writing a meet cute, you’ve got a head start on creating something entertaining and true to the characters.
The Rom-Com is a well-worn subgenre but there is always room for fresh and exciting perspectives. This video will help inspire and guide you to write the next great meet cute.

I think something important when writing a push/pull-kinda story is that if the pull-behaviour actually is creepy, the characters needs to react accordingly, and not just "fall in love with it" or let it pass. It's not realistic and normalize toxic behaviour. I think the series You did a great job with this phenomenon. He gets obsessed with Her almost instantly, and as an audience you're prepared for a normal love story (cause every push/pull-relationship ends happily), but after a while when his actions are shown in a different light you're starting to question his behaviour and other characters in other series/movies.

I get your point but the situation in Scott Pilgrim is a bit different. It will sound weird but, in the story, the girl literally travel through his mind causing him to be obsessed with her. Had she not literally appeared in his mind, he wouldn't have seen her. The movie is a great watch though, I recommend it
@ACey96
@ACey96 4 жыл бұрын
Not for Scott because it's a different case, she literally forced her way into his mind, nearly every evening, and after the party when he goes on a date, it's her past that's the problem, Scott is an Asshole but so is she
@Mr.En1gm4
@Mr.En1gm4 4 жыл бұрын
The push-pull dynamic isn't intrinsically creepy, one perfect example for this is the relationship between Dawn and Ogie in Waitress, specially in the musical version. Dawn tries to push Ogie out of her life because she is scared that he'll be disappointed and run the other way, and Ogie pulls trying to show Dawn that when he sees her he wants to again, that he truly cares about her, and this dynamic eventually works for both of them.

Gilroy’s Duplicity is a fantastic love story set in the world of corporate spies. The characters meet cute and revisit the same “script” several times as they pretend to meet for the first time over and over in the film. The whole script is a masterclass in subtext and dialogue, evidenced by how the meet cute scenes, with the same words, each mean something new to each character every time it plays out. Anyone interested in writing romantic stories should watch and study it.

You seem to define 'meet cute' to really just mean any meeting of characters who will later become a couple. I'd define it more narrowly, including only meetings that are specifically some kind of anecdote-worthy incident in and of themselves. For example, in Lost Weekend, the couple meet when their coat tickets are accidentally exchanged at the theatre. It's a happenstance that forces them together in an awkward way. Whereas some of the examples in your opening montage are simply of one character being introduced to the other. "I went to the theatre and had to wait for the show to end because my coat ticket was given to someone else." is an anecdote, especially when we the audience know that he was in an alcoholic panic to get away and find something to drink. "Someone was introduced to me." is not.
@StudioBinder

Our definition of meet cute is a little more specific than that. Please take a look at our blog article which dives deeper into the concept: www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-a-meet-cute/ Hopefully, you'll see that the way in which we define a meet cute is similar to what you just described. Cheers! 🎬

As much as I love the other movies, I clicked this when I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; any analysis on it (no matter how little)never fails to amaze me. It's so underrated with the younger generation(maybe not even commonly known but I'm not too sure), is so realistic in describing the journey of relationships, and always attracts tears from my eyes by the end of it. Helped even more by the incredibly raw performances from the cast, especially Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet and Jon Brion's mesmerizing and heartfelt score. A masterpiece, really, if I could say so. Everyone should watch and experience it at least once in their lives. :)
