One of the many challenges that we musicians encounter in our musical life is how to compose in a specific style (Jazz, Pop, Metal, Classical...)
To be fair, this is not a problem for everyone. There are a few musicians that compose their own music and they simply not care about the style. That's cool too!
In my experience, though, many of us do want to write in a specific style. And even if we don't, it's still super-useful to learn how to write music in a different style, as you learn a lot. Great music has been written by musicians who were not afraid to learn more than one style.
But how can we learn how to write music in a specific style?
In this video, we see together 3 practices that will help you learn how to write music in a new style in the shortest possible time. In this video, we see also how to 'dissect' a song to see how differently theory is used in different styles.

This is one of the greatest videos for "beginners" who want to become "Shredders". Most of neo-classical shredders just picked one of famous classical composers, read their music, played their music and learned the theory behind their music. This is a simple, but long and serious way in being a guitar god.

indeed! im also a pianist, turned producer, and am still learning to compose original songs, and melodies for different instruments, and its been and still is challenging, which i love, and this wonderful man, really struck a chord with me!

Great advice..."transcribe". Hopefully people will recognize patterns and relationships that aren't noticed when merely listening...as you said. So yes transcribe, and also analyze your transcripts.

This was very helpful & I am grateful that KZfaq recommended this video. I like the neoclassical style of Luca Turilli but also enjoy soulful solos such as Carlos Santana. At the moment I am reading a book by Santana called The Universal Tone & he is constantly naming songs & bands that he enjoyed in his early days & how they inspired him & influenced his style. As I am reading the book I am also checking out those bands & songs & I can see the direct influence. So definitely learn from your inspirators aswell as their influences. 🎸

What a great video! But the absorption process and effectiveness depend on the person and age,for instance i was able to absorb yngwie's reinvention of baroque music pretty easily(when i was a teenager) without learning more than 7 of his licks or so, the chords and the feel came by nature, like whenever i try to compose something baroque like it feels natural and easy to me(although i do some thinking whenever i do that ofc like any composer would do), the thing is, the absorption process as i said depends on the person, some learn better when they play the music on an instrument, some do better just by listening, but by far your method is indeed the most logical and useful one, but i think the best way to absorb a musical style is to make yourself feel it,and make a connection with it and with the moments of tension of release in it,train your ear to guess whether the song will add more tension or resolve in the next chord, in the end music is all about tension resolution ans suspension, in fact this concept here helped me shape my musical background although im purely self taught and I have below average music theory knowledge (guilty of using tabs tho), anyways thank you for this valuable video, best regards!

Great video! One of my favourites to play on guitar so far is CPE Bach's Solfeggietto, originally for piano. I haven't learned the whole thing but the first part of it is super cool to play on guitar.

Yea, to play neo-classical you need to start transcribing classical music for the guitar (or bass, keys, etc). My favorite neo-classical guitarist is Uli Jon Roth btw. I am a fan of Malmsteen and others, but Uli invokes the sound of a violin on the electric guitar so so much better than anyone I've ever heard. Have a listen to his version of The Four Seasons by Vivaldi.

I always felt that exercises on the piano are much more than boring exercises. I often see them as small pieces of music and often they create a base for great pieces of music.

About learning the neo-classical, i think its better to learn the lutes pieces in a classical guitar, to understand better the baroque counterpoint...

Help me out! My idea to understan a style is to have the patterns that define it well reasearched for example, what type of chord progresions are used, what type of rithms, which instruments, are there any recurrend themes, melodies, phrases or motifs used over the style as a whole. IF you have more sugestions lets me know!

How to learn so called "neo-classical" rock? Forget about classical and learn barroque music instead. And then copy it's characteristic motifs and all and disregard everything that has to do with counterpoint, voice leading, structure, etc. Hehe sorry, had to take the jab!

Mmmh, try to listen to people like George Bellas, and tell me if you can't hear counterpoint, voice leading, structure, etc. Sure, not all players know or are competent in this, many just go for speed... but there are some super-competent people in the Neoclassical style.

I was being ironic - I love Bach too, I actually go around telling people to listen to Bach, and this became quite of a running joke with my students. I can see how the joke may not translate well into a YT video though.
