Sakkari faced ZERO top 70 opponents in this event and had a player who had never beaten a top 50 player prior to this event and a player who was 3-14 for the year and who had played a 3 hour match just a few hours ago and STILL LOST. It’s been 3 and a half years since Sakkari won her first and only title in Rabat.

Maria has reached the bottom of the barrel. It's up to her either to stay there or to make a great comeback. I am quite sure that she has the potential to rise up again.

They've already shortened the highlight reel from 8 min + previously and are now showing the same shot from multiple angles even in those 5 mins. What's the point WTA?! 🙄

A what a historic win for Sherif! can't say I'm disappointed in Sakarri though, such a missed opportunity!

Sakkari would have been better off losing in one of the early round three-setters she played. She got through all those tough matches just to lay an egg in another final. She had the easier SF and a longer recovery time while Sherif had a 3-hour match, and she still couldn't take the trophy. This is flat out embarrassing for a player as high-ranked as she is, and there's nothing positive to take from this. She took a WC to play here to try to get an easy title, and still couldn't do it. And she still has not won a title in over 3 years.

Maria...girl. Hard to take any positives from this tournament. Cakewalk draw yet she's struggling every match. Got to the final where her opponent on paper should be no problem, had breaks in both sets and still choked. She really should consider new coach after this season bc clearly sth is not working. Sakkari really hasn't completely overcome doubts about her potential. She said no one thought she'd make it. When she gets close to disproving those people wrong, she plays well below her level up to that point.

Tennis is really having not much to do with a players ranking in this age. Anyone can lose to anyone- The girls in the top 50 are just a little bit more consistent and can play bigger tournaments and rake in more points. After all a qualifier can win a slam now.

I feel bad for Sakkari. She seems like a nice person, her peers like her, but it must be tiresome to be giving concession after concession speech after championship matches. I hope she has the maturity to accept this is her level, a good contender for a few years, but not a top level player (despite the rankings). She is still making a living -a pretty good one- doing what she loves and I am sure her financial future is secure. This also helps us appreciate the stratosphere that players like Graf, Seles, the Williams, Court, Hingis, Navratilova, Evert, Henin, and a few others inhabit. Not all of us can be the CEO or the president, but doing the best with what we have and living with dignity while having social and financial areas covered, with health and quality time, for me that's living a good life.
