From the great mind of Ridley Scott, and with incredible acting from Sigourney Weaver, the Alien franchise started off with a lot of promise. In Paul's opinion, the sequel Aliens directed by James Cameron was even better! But with Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, Alien vs. Predator, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant, the movies just didn't have the same magic. Join Paul's Ego as he dissects what went great and what went wrong in this iconic horror / science fiction series of films. What's the worst Alien movie? Find out in this thorough retrospective.

Ash was programmed by the company to bring back an alien by any means necessary, including killing the rest of the crew if "he" felt it was necessary. He did. One small correction. The Xenomorph effects in Alien3 were mostly not CGI. They were divided between a full body suit and a one third scale rod puppet. The puppet was filmed in a separate studio to the rest of the film against a blue screen and composited in. One of the many reasons it looks so shitty is because the lighting in the studio where the Xenomorph scenes were filmed was completely different than the other sets and so had to be adjusted. On top of that the rod puppet had to be re-scaled, composited in and the rods rotoscoped out. They probably would have been better off using CGI. Considering the final result.

The shit thing is, that is a very interesting approach to doing stuff like that that really could have worked, offering physicality of stop motion but fluid motion of puppetry. Unfortunately the huge problems in execution make it stick out like a sore thumb.

Don't forget about Alien Isolation. Yes, it's a game, but a) it's excellent, 100% captures the first movie's essence perfectly and b) is canon, tells the story of what Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter went through trying to find her missing mother between Alien and Aliens. Must-play for any Alien fan.

@erik newton The game is great. I don't consider it Canon though as it does break the first movie. The first movie very specifically spells out that the company knew about the derelict and it's contents. The Nostromo was rerouted from Thedus to make sure they picked up that beacon. So they know the coordinates as well. So the fact that they would wait so long after the Nostormo failed to return breaks the first film or shows the company really is stupid. That is my problem with everything after the original Alien film. Don't get me started on the "prequels" either.

Fun fact: the Xenomorph in Alien³ is often cited as an example of bad early 90's CGI but it's actually a practical miniature puppet filmed on a bluescreen then added in afterwards, so it's not bad CGI it's just a very odd practical effect. The great directors of the '70s & early '80s all have the same problem: The more resources they're given, the more their work sucks. Scott, Cameron, Spielberg (mostly), Scorsese, Lucas (lol) ... give them $20- to 30-million dollars, and you WILL have a great movie. Every dollar after that has diminishing returns, and somewhere around the $100-million area, they get so obsessed with making something pretty that they can't be bothered to make something interesting.

Instead, because of their prestige, everyone around them things they can do no wrong and never questions them. Introducing the alien queen that lays eggs and using the colonists to cocoon them and breed more aliens was the scariest shit ever. They're not cannon fodder, they're like the Zerg that come in waves. They reproduce so quickly and mature to this deadly predator in merely a day that if they would ever land on earth we would be fucked. That's what Ripley keeps pointing out. Using these badass turrets and marines and still get overrun was a brilliant change from the first movie
@thekraken1909
@thekraken1909 Жыл бұрын
As far as the expanded lore explained, when in lower numbers, the xenomorphs tend to become more reserved and sneaky in order to outwit and ambush their targets. When a queen is present however, they essentially become much more violent and territorial. And when they have larger numbers, caution is thrown to the wind so they can just swarm and overwhelm. Depends on the context of the situation. (and I'm not suggesting that third party information makes up for a lack of information in the movies, so take this however you wish)

The number 1 reason Ripley is such an amazing example of a strong female lead where as something like Rey or Captain Marvel is that Ellen Ripley is a bad ass but its not because she's perfect and she isn't perfect at all. Ripley has strength from her emotions and who she is as a long haul space trucker. She doesn't just magically do everything perfect like Rey just automatically being good with a lightsaber, or perfect with the force or stronger than every one else for the reason of "because" Ripley is strong willed and working toward the goal of saving the girl which is driving her to push herself to win. She doesn't win because she gets lucky or just happens to do everything perfectly and make zero mistakes. Thats why Ripley should be held up as the absolute GOLD STANDARD for a strong female lead or character in a movie. She wins cause its movie, but its a struggle she beats while having all the flaws a human being has.

As a movie lover, I feel personally offended by Prometheus. Just because you polish a turd, it doesn’t mean, we are stupid enough to not know one. If your characters need to be complete idiots for your plot to happen, then your movie sucks. Nobody wants to watch a movie full of unpleasant dumbasses with a plot that only moves forward because all the characters are stupidly terrible at their jobs. Who are you supposed to root for? The pseudo archeologists that think aliens are inviting them to their home planet with 0 explanation on how they came to that conclusion? The android that decides to kill them all because “just because”? The geologist who can’t read his own maps? The biologist that encounters strange life forms and follows 0 security protocols? The captain that doesn’t take care of their crew? The billionaire that thinks Omnipotent aliens will willingly give him eternal life because of “reasons”? Or his “daughter” that does absolutely nothing in the whole movie and can pretty much be edited out and change nothing from the plot?

The story is that they used her blood samples from the med center on the prison planet. She was at that time impregnated with a queen chestburster. Apparently the chestburster also changes her dna (not sure how that was supposed to work, perhaps it's a previously undiscussed way for it to keep the human body from rejecting it until it was developed...they also never discussed how the eggs got on her ship to begin with when the queen ripped out her reproductive organs before the final fight in the second movie, so it's all just guesswork). They were trying to isolate the queen dna to clone it.. ripley clones were just multiple failed attempts at that. They never managed to clone them both separately.. although they appeared normal both still contained the others dna, thus ripleys alien characteristics and the birth of the newborn who rejected the queen and decided ripley was it's mother.
@the-trustees
@the-trustees Жыл бұрын
@@waymire01 NOT sure if you agree or not. The idea is that the queen brought up an egg (or more) on the ship. But there is no film vidence of that. If we just accept that an egg was on the Sulaco AND that Ripley's DNA was collected AFTER the impregnation, then the story works... if not, then it doesn't. 😀
@waymire01
@waymire01 Жыл бұрын
@@the-trustees Exactly. There had to be at least two because one got her and the other got the dog. They die after so it couldn't have been the same one. Apparently the film was being shot without a finished script and was reedited by the studio.. and things were left out in the end. There is another cut, what would be a directors cut except the director refused to participate, that has multiple changes. There were multiple scripts, 3 and 4 were supposed to be shot together at one point, Ripley wasn't even going to be in the movie to begin with....they took a bunch of ideas from several of them and mashed them together into what we got on screen. Some of the concepts from these scripts were used in Alien 4, and some were even used in the last two films including an alien spore that is contagious through inhalation and infects everything it comes in contact with.

Aliens is also my favourite of all time. I saw it in the cinema when I was 13 with my mum as that was the only way I could go due to the rating and I absolutely loved alien. I’ve never seen a cinema crowd stand, cheer and clap like I did when that loader bay door comes up. A defining moment of my youth. Not seen it since. Mum also loved it surprisingly. Also the facehugger scene in the med lab where Ripley throws it and in runs toward camera and jumps at her face again….. well, that scarred me for life. I had nightmares about that POV scene of it jumping toward camera for MONTHS. Nothing yet is scarier than a facehugger loose in a room. Not a thing.

Did you see prometheus beforehand? Because if you went in to see Alien covenant without seeing prometheus then I could see how you were disappointed. I didn't even know prometheus was supposed to be part of the Alien franchise until quite a bit after watching Alien covenant in the theater. I was like, "who is this girl David disected?" And "who is david? Why is he so important to this film?". Then after I watched prometheus is made sense. I will say that the transition from prometheus to Alien covenant is quite weird, however. Because the crew we got to know in prometheus essentially just doesn't come up in aloen covenant. Those two films are more like an anthology than anything. I think it was just the bad marketing of prometheus and misleading information of Alien covenant supposed to be an "Alien" film. They really shouldn't have caved in to people's demands from prometheus. They should have just kept doing what they were doing. But guess what? The audience got Aliens in Alien covenant and they still hated it.. so what do the producers, directors and writers do? They don't give you aliens = you get mad. They give you aliens = you get mad. It's like wow.. you can't make anybody happy. But at the end of the day the writers and producers should have just went on to make the second film the way that they intended. The prequels were never supposed to be about the aliens, but about how they were created. Who were their creators and why they were created. I would have loved to see more lore about the engineers, but nah instead we got more aliens. Exactly what the audience wanted. And they still got mad. Smh. Alien covenant was ok, but It could have done far better if the writers didn't have to force promomorphs and such in to the script just because the audience wanted it. Now they have to try and finish off the prequel trilogy with what they have left, which is just a mess of what the audience wanted.

Alien and Aliens (with Aliens being my all-time favorite movie, ever) are just awesome beyond words. But (imho) only if you watch director´s cut, both of them, as they add immensely to the story. Also, 100% agree as to Ellen Ripley being ultimate bad@ss character as opposed to all message-forced-female-strong-characters. Ellen is so humble and brave at the same time it really makes her a natural hero. Awesome. Just awesome. Re Alien 3, the reason most people hate it (I guess) me included is the way the frenchise so arrogantly disposed of Hicks and Newt, of the screen. It could be argued how "iconic" both characters were, Hicks in particular, but just killing both of them off was just lame. That is, ofcourse, only mho.

Good retrospective. A couple of corrections: 1. FYI, when you highlight the musical score to the original 'Alien,' the specific clip you use (when the creatures is blown into space) actually features pre-recorded music: Howard Hansen's Romantic Symphony #2, which is also used over the end credits of the movie. The rest of the (amazing) original score was by Jerry Goldsmith. 2. Goldsmith did not score 'Aliens.' James Horner did.

I remember going on a Alien marathon a couple of years back. Three and four definitely weren't as bad as some people say they were, but looking back at it now they were quite weird. It didn't really build off of what one and two did. It was like having one immensely talented director working on part one and two and then a comedy guy working on part three and four. Nonetheless it wasn't THAT bad. I still think it had some enjoyable moments and should still be watched. The whole series as a whole has rewatched value. If you're only going to watch part one and two then I think you are doing yourself a disservice. Prometheus and Alien covenant are beautiful sci movies. And dare i say it, good sci fi movies. If you're going in expecting the monster of aliens though then you will be highly disappointed. These two prequels try to explore the lore of what an Alien is and they do it quite beautifully. It raises existential questions as to why humans exist, what is their purpose and most importantly in those two films what is the purpose of the main character, David, an android. He genuinely scary. He is like Ted bundy where he seems harmless and nice but if you have seen the stuff he has done its nothing short of psychopathic. Which is weird to say because he is an android, right? So that's why I think the prequels are good sci fi movies. They aren't Alien one and two. If you're just living your life expecting and wanting everything to either be Alien one and two and not for what it is then I think you're living in the past. Its a similar argument to mumble rap and 90s rap. Yes, mumble rap is different but it's what today's generation is. But I digress. If Alien vs predator counts as an alien film then I think Alien vs predator requiem was the worst film of them all
