I had no expectations at all, and i never thought the title was funny or misleading, it tells you exactly what you're in for. It was the oddity of the title in the first place that grabbed my attention. I went into this movie blindly, and i was blown away by how good it was. I loved this movie and i don't see anything wrong with it.

Studios just don't know what the audience likes, and right now they don't even care anymore. One recent example for total studio cluelessness: In 2007 Damian Lewis starred in a great TV show about a cop (Charlie Crews), who got $50 million as a compensation for spending 12 years in prison for crimes he didn't commit. He still went back to work after that, but his former buddies at the precinct (some of which had helped to convict him, although he was innocent) didn't like that very much and tried to get him to quit with some subtle bullying and using his new partner Dani Reese (who was still dealing with her past and current substance abuse) as a spy to collect dirt on him and force him out. In addition to navigating workplace intrigues, he also had to get used to technological and societal developments he had missed due to his time in prison - like those stupid sensor taps in public bathrooms, that require you to use Italian levels of sign language for 20 minutes on the whole room, before you accidentally hit the spot and they spray water for 3 seconds. And the event that got him convicted seems to have been orchestrated by a conspiracy, that is connected to organised crime, so he has to solve that as well... while his prison buddy Ted (former CEO convicted for insider trading), who moved in with him and became his financial advisor kept buying shit like orange plantations with his money, because he thought he was Lieutenant Dan or something. It was a really well-made, complex show with interesting characters, elaborate plot lines, great single episodes and at the same time a good overarching story, that connected everything. I liked the actors, the setting and the subtle humour of it, that came organically with the main character's difficulty of catching up to modern life - as if he had been in a coma for 12 years. Many characters had some "internal dynamite": Charlie had become a fruit-loving zen master in prison, but we were kind of waiting for him to drop that and go totally ballistic, because he had been mistreated and traumatised so badly in those 12 years, that he could as well have snapped and become a serial kill*r. Ted was always on the brink of committing fraud or running off with the money, although he was a really good friend - but letting him take care of the money was like asking Winnie the Pooh to guard your 50 million honey jars. Dani never really got off her alcohol and other drugs, and for a while her loyalty was more than questionable. TL; DR: The show was well-liked and had good numbers, but was cancelled after 2 seasons because of the world economic crisis (2008). Allegedly people didn't want to watch drama anymore, because they had enough financial drama at home, so it was dumped for some silly comedy shows. I can't confirm that at all - "Life" was so immersive, that it took my mind off of all the real life bs, that was going on back then. Even when the show runners were told they wouldn't be renewed for a third season, they did a great job of wrapping everything up before the end of the second season. They cared enough, that they didn't want to leave the audience with a bunch of open ends, and it honestly didn't feel too rushed. I have no idea who shat in the producers' empty skull cavities back then, but taking "Life" off the air to make something like "Drop Dead Diva" was a grave mistake.

Yeah. I saw both Smurfs and Cowboys & Aliens in theatre opening weekend, and this wasn't the movie I walked out on. I honestly had a lot of fun with it. I had no idea where it was going, but in the good way, Craig was a blast... 7/10, underrated honestly. I get why it flopped but only because it's not the kind of movie that's gonna play well in theatres I think, it's something that should've thrived on home release, but it was too soon to be an Amazon Original and too late to be a vhs cult hit. It reminds me of the John Carter movie for that; they had similar issues.

@@brucesnow7125 Not all were, as he pointed out. Popcorn movies rarely were, entertainment was considered a worthy outcome. Now even popcorn movies have to have a political message clumsily shoehorned in. And on that point, politics can be included in a movie, if organically done, rather than the jarring sophomoric soapboxing that we see more today. I think the people who you see making the "EveRYtHing iS PolITiCs" claim are the exact types who think politics = egotistically bludgeoning others over the head with their asinine political viewpoints.
@brucesnow7125
@brucesnow7125 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulw5039 what popcorn movies are we talking about? Even the most outlandish stories will have a political message in them. Politics and ideologies are intertwined, movies even unintentionally send message. Be honest buddy boy, you're not really against injection of politics, rather you're only against politics you disagree with. I get it, usually it's on the nose and only done to collect tokens. But that's the thing, this was the case from the damn start. Freaking Indiana Jones movies had politics in them. You don't believe me? How about Temple of Doom pretty much depicting colonists as good guys who are there to save India from barbarism. I'm pretty sure you had absolutely zero problems with that. What about Commando? Insanely ridiculous action movie. Well, it classically depicts America's interventions towards other countries as a positive. Matrix's backstory is that he heroically took down an evil South American dictator, and now he is taking revenge. Matrix proceeds to single handedly destroy his entire army and save the unnamed South American country from the coup, while also protecting his daughter. This is classic American exceptionalism in full force. And before you start accusing me of something, I adore the movies I listed. I'm just not blind and see that there are clear messages there.

What was an action western sci fi film combo, turned into a heist film too!!? The Mandalorian is done right in that the aliens are interspersed and accepted, not just villainized and one dimensional. It's Still confusing to me that simple savage (pardon the pun) monsters can create such intricate sophisticated devices and tech - maybe the same could be said of us.

I remember this one as a rare surprise when I saw it in the theater. I went expecting glorified trash but found the final movie to be pretty solid, especially considered the troubled production and excess of screenwriters and producers. And I saw it again on Blu-ray in late 2019 and thought it held up pretty well...

I went into this on an airplane with zero expectations, but it wasnt half bad. I wont say run out and see it, but it's good enough for a rainy night or a flight.

One of my favorite moments in movie history is when they have the big action set piece with Daniel and Olivia on the ship, and after they jump off into a lake, Daniel says “We were flying…”. Hilarious, realistic, and the only thing I remember about this film.

I also liked, how they never said things like: spaceship/ blasters etc but used time appropriate words to describe all the alien stuff. Edit: do they even acknowledge them as aliens? Like creatures not from this world? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie so I don’t remember. I wanna say they referred to the aliens as demons but I might be wrong

I was so ready to love this movie back then, but ended up merely liking it. There indeed is something off about it which is hard to pinpoint. Still, kudos for trying, the cast and Favreau make it work nonetheless.

At least Harrison ford was truthful about it. Most actors try to sell movies they star in like it's the best thing they have ever made.

The movie was very entertaining. I always thought the title hurt the movie’s chances since it made it seem like it was going to be some sort of spoof or silly movie, when in reality it was pretty dark and serious. I remember seeing the trailer in the theater and once the title showed up on screen, people just busted out laughing. It was just a very odd choice for a title.
