In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
This time out we explore the career of the legendary Jack Nicholson, who has graced us with a plethora of scene-stealing performances in some truly great and iconic films that have helped define cinema today. From THE SHINING to ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST to CHINATOWN to BATMAN to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT to THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK to A FEW GOOD MEN to AS GOOD AS IT GETS to ABOUT SCHMIDT to THE DEPARTED and beyond, Jack Nicholason has been a powerhouse for the ages, sprinkling his devilish charm all throughout Hollywood since he emerged on the scene. Nicholson has since disappeared from Hollywood, with his last role being in the James L. Brooks dud HOW DO YOU KNOW, which was ten years ago. Where did Jack go? What's he been up to? Will we ever see him on the big screen again or has he officially retired and left us with his film legacy to chew on? All this and more in the latest WTF Happened to...

“I warned him.” Jack Nicholson once told a story about him doing some pills on the set of Batman 89 and he passed out as once he came to, he was in his car on the edge of a cliff. Perhaps he was telling Heath that it’s a dangerous role that can consume you if you’re not careful.
@ReedRosson1987
@ReedRosson1987 3 жыл бұрын
You’re half right. He warned him about taking the dangerous but effective prescription sleep drug AMBIEN (aka ZOLPIDEM). It causes severe amnesia in people who aren’t tolerant to hypnotics or Benzos... and yes jack took it and almost drove himself off a cliff. Anyway he warned the very sleep deprived actor Heath Ledger about taking Ambien. It turns out that Heath took Ambien and he forgot how many various types of pills he was taking (opioids, Benzos, etc.) and he took too many pills and overdosed. Correct me if I’m wrong though. But I’m pretty certain of this.

Jack and Heath had discussed Ambien, a sleeping aid Heath was taking at the time. Jack had warned him about the dangers of that drug, relating how, when he was taking Ambien, in his sleep, he had gotten in his car, drove around, and woke up in someone else's driveway. Considering where Jack lives, up in the Hollywood hills off Mulhulland Drive, a road that's a bit scary in the daytime when you're wide awake, the concept of driving that *in your sleep* should scare the crap out of any halfway sane individual.

I wouldn´t be surprised if he got lucky with JLAW at the Oscar party,tbh. P.S. About the whole Joker thing: there´s an interview where Nicholson said that he absolutely loved the performance of Heath Ledger,(he praised the movie in general).he called him a "very talented young actor" and that he was really upset when he heard of his death,because he also had bad experience with prescription drugs.

If I remember the interview correctly,he said that these sleeping pills are really dangerous.People understimate them,because they're legal prescripted drugs by doctors and think these aren't as dangerous as illegal drugs and end up in coma or dead. Regarding Jack's answer about Ledger's death, I'm pretty sure that he was referring about the risk of getting too deep into the characters psychology. When get into a role, you have the risk to leak certain aspects of the character into your real personality, you can get yourself lost into a character. The Joker is a character with such a heavy, distorted and sick mentallity, that Ledger just couldn't handle. Probably that role reinforced his anxiety, fears, traumatic events resulting on him acting like a joker on his own personal life. People tend to think that acting is only a matter of being extroverted and shameless, but one role after another can easily modify your psychology and personality blurring the line between the real you and the characters, leading to this kind of consequences and borderline actions. RIP Ledger, definitely a magestic acting.

He has previously discussed that playing the Joker was mentally and emotionally taxing. Jack Nicholson’s response to the question about Heath Ledger’s death is likely referring to their shared method acting. There’s a reason why most method actors are referred to as difficult to work with especially when portraying darker characters- they often incorporate aspects of their character into their off stage lives. This combined with the drug scene that is sadly common in Hollywood and personal struggles make for a dangerous situation.

@@REDMAN298 I don't think so. He is a good actor but not on the same level as Jack Nicholson. He played well in Gladiator but if it wasn't for the Joker, people wouldn't be mentioning him right now nor would most people know who he is. Definitely is not on the same level as a legendary actor like Jack Nicholson is. That's like comparing someone like Katharine Hepburn to someone like Jared Leto, who is a good actor but nowhere near the best. He has had great roles, Dallas Cowboys Club where his Oscar was definitely worth it but most of his movies, ehh. Not really a leading blockbuster type guy unfortunately.

Thats why it's probably his best performance he ever gave. He had moved on from the joker and was already filming another film. So no, the joker role didn't absorbe him.

Stop glorifying what happened. Ledger either overdosed or was murdered by his Freemason superiors. I completely agree with the 2 people above, he wasn't consumed by the role of the Joker, this is all nonsense that people say to create some kind of mystery around the character. All his friends and family said he was cheerful, happy, and his usual professional self during filming. Admittedly he did complain about sleeping problems, but that started way before The Dark Knight, which is why he was self-medicating with benzos. He overdosed from benzos and opiates many months after he'd finished filming The Dark Knigth, and already moved on to filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Which is why half way through the film Heath's character changes appearance, and the role is played by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.

That's an idiot's take living inside Hollywood fairy tales. Nicholson already clarified he was talking about Ambien which he claims he warned Ledger about. There was nothing wrong with Ledger's mood while filming. He was skateboarding around, joking and showing pictures of his newborn daughter. Movies are just make-believe. As is acting. Stop glamorizing it as if it were spirit-channeling. There is nothing mystical about it. The few examples whose heads can't take it, rarely die young. They just keep working and get a reputation for being weird and tiresome. Like Daniel Day-Lewis, for example.

Jack is a talented actor. He entertains, no doubt. In 1982 I was hired to play a role in a rock opera written by an insanely talented duo of a man and his spouse. I played a despicable and ruthless L.A. gumshoe in the play and sang a song that was devoted to his prowess. Being at times a bit O.C.D. I rehearsed relentlessly for three weeks and the couple gave me a duster (London Fog overcoat) to support my performance. I lived in that coat and rehearsed all of the words until they were in my bones and I effectively grew into the role. We performed the opera segments (the musical parts) at the Troubador in L.A. one night and that was that. It took me weeks to shed the character that I had adopted. "I warned him" is obvious as Jack knew that Heath would immerse himself in the character. Jack is a monument to narcissism. And he is a damn good actor.

No offense but why do some people have to be so negative?? As if some people think there isn't any talent anymore. There still is, it just wasn't discovered as much as it was back then. (I think)

"I warned him" may have Had more to the story as I recall an article saying Jack felt he should have been a consultant to Heath taking on the role of the Joker because the Joker is a character that can take its toll on the actor,. I always took that as him knowing that playing the Joker also comes with risks to the actor's mind if the actor dives deep enough into the part EDIT: I read this article years ago and it probably wasn't a re;iable source. I was kind of hoping Jack would have a very small cameo in Joker but he's given us enough. Nicholson is a legend in the truest form of the word and just like hos idol (Brando) He defined acting for many generations to come. I hope he's enjoying his retirement

No. No no. Noooo. You recalled something you read in a comments section posted by somebody who didn't know what the hell they were talking about. That "playing the joker takes a toll..." is all garbage. Not only did Jack not say 'I warned him" but "...'em/them", he wasn't referring to playing the Joker. He was talking about the drugs. He also meant "'em/them" as in Ledger's associates and the people around him. He never knew or met Heath personally.

I believe you because I find Jack warning Heath ( And others around him) about the drugs because he knew what the Hollywood scene and influence can do to young actors and the toxic people who attach themselves to big stars more believable Plus I know he didn't know Heath. Jouquin went completely method eating an apple a day for Joker and he's as healthy as ever. I wasn't stating that as pure fact BTW. I read that in an article years ago and it was in my adolescence so I wasn't as wise to BS reports back then. Thanks for clearing it up
