During the 1980s and ’90s, John McTiernan was the biggest director of the era. Not only did he direct everyone’s favorite Christmas movie of all time, 1988’s Die Hard, but he also made the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Predator, the first (and best) Jack Ryan film, The Hunt for Red October, and Last Action Hero, which a lot of people hate but is a cult classic around these parts.
His career continued going strong in the nineties, with Die Hard With A Vengeance and The Thomas Crown Affair. Still, bad experiences of The 13th Warrior and Rollerball led to a cooling period. Even worse, he wound up in jail due to a long, convoluted story which we dig into here. So will McTiernan ever make a comeback? Join us on WTF Happened to John McTiernan, written by Taylor James Johnson & Brad Hamerly, and narrated, produced and edited by Taylor James Johnson.

Oooooh! I loved the 13th Warrior! Imo, it was like a retelling of the Beowulf epic minus all the fantasy. I know Michael Chrichton wrote the novel the film was based on, but I think the film was better and really came off to me as Beowulf in real life, lol But I digress, the movie was just awesome! I'm so glad you described this as a "lightning in a bottle" and one of the best movies of all time. A lot of people don't understand how hard it is to make this type of movie and make it epic. 99.9% of theses action flicks try and fail and of the rest, only very few are among the greatest in any genre. Time period has to be right to capture the attitude of the era, cast has to be right, dialogue has to be right, script has to be right, director has to be right and luck has to be on their side. It's so much harder to create a "Predator" than to create any "Godfather" or "Sound of Music". For drama, you can go almost all the way with awesome cast and well written dialogue + expensive production. But for action it doesn't matter how much money you throw into a movie if the magic isn't there.

Honestly, the plots for Predator and Die Hard should not have worked. Especially Predator. They should have been, at most, B-Movies. Heck, I think the first Die Hard adaptation (not counting the source novel) was for it to just be a Commando sequel. Granted, we've seen a WHOLE lotta copies fail over the years, but you're right. It was a perfect storm. Kind of like the original Ghostbusters.

The one thing that I don't think got stressed out enough is that McTiernan was accused of lying to the FBI OVER THE PHONE. What happened was some guy called him one evening, said he was an FBI agent and inquired if he knew the PI they were investigating at that time: McTiernan said "No" and hung up. Anyone could've been on the other end of the line. He should've probably told the guy that, if he really was an FBI agent, he should've come and ask those questions in person, but, still, it's insane that someone can go to jail for something like that. As for the wire-tapping, I am pretty sure it is still standard procedure in Hollywood, given how much nobody trusts anyone over there and all the blackmailing that goes on behind the scenes - McTiernan was just very unlucky when it came to choose the man for the job.

I never understood the hate towards The 13th Warrior. It became one of my favorites after I first saw it around a year after its release. It has great pacing, a good structure, wonderful atmosphere, and great acting. My favorite aspect is how much the myths and spirituality of the Northmen shape how they see the world. For them, their view of reality as an extension of the world of spirits is just as valid as Ahmad ibn Fadlan's logical deconstruction of the world after the Greek and Arabic philosophical traditions. Yet, they don't shun him, but welcome his unorthodox insights to help defeat their enemies. Ahmad, in turn, begins to embrace the ways of the Northmen, becoming a real warrior and gaining the respect of his new friends.

I thought it was underrated too but it did not break brains. Because of the satiric humor in 1987 RoboCop. Think about the game LAST OF US 2... as a fan of the original I HATED THAT STORY but if they marketed it correctly rather than just trying to get my money... I would be interested to see the McTiernan Cut of 13th Warrior, but I thought the film we got was pretty good. "Eaters of the Dead" sounds like the title of horror B-movie so I think the title change was a good call.

@@kowalski5599 no idea - either he doesn’t want to be bothered with big projects now that he is in his 70s or he’s not very high on the list of Hollywood producers anymore. He’s still an ASC member, so he retains some prestige but it should also be noticed he was never a “star DP” outside of certain circles. Which doesn’t mean that he’s no good, just that other people are perceived as more prestigious.

He's one of the greatest action film directors within the past 50 years in Hollywood. It's a shame that he doesn't get recognition that he deserves. In Hollywood, all it takes is to make a couple of or a few box bombs to ruin a great career. He's still a great director in my opinion.

I will never not love _The 13th Warrior_ ... the scene in which Banderas "learns" their language by slowly having it change, have certain words be understandable, before he then fully knows it, and so do we... is actually a masterpiece that everybody now lazily side-steps by subtitles

John McTiernan is a legend. Even his awful films look good and have some nice shots and style at times. Predator, Die Hard, Medicine Man (Underrated), Hunt For Red October, Thomas Crown, 13th Warrior, Die Hard With A Vengeance? With a resume that good, how could anyone dislike this man. John McTiernan is truly missed in this dwindling industry. The problem he faces now, other than the idiots running the show, is that if he wants to make another big action film, the budgets are going to be far too high, in a time when the box office is mostly diminished these days. Doing another Die Hard or Predator or anything close to that scale, would cost at least 80 million, and it's too risky at this point, taking into consideration the pandemic as well. Best case scenario for McT would be for him to get a film with a budget of no higher than 25-30 million, to kind of restart again and have a safer chance of the film making a profit, or... a studio should hire him to direct a film for Marvel or DC or Lucasfilm, something that would have a great chance of making a profit even if the budget was 100 million. That way, McT is back on top, and will have some slack to make 1 or 2 new films of his liking with higher budgets, and with 35mm instead of digital.

The movie is so ahead of its time and has one of the best soundtracks ever made!!! The best song on the soundtrack isn't even in Last Action Hero, it's in "JACK SLATER IV", Angry Again by Megadeth.
