You mentioned Michael Mann as being the man that made "Miami Vice" what it is , which is definitely true. However, you left the legendary director who also made the show what it actually is. And that was the legendary filmmaker and T.V. director, Thomas Carter. He, along with Michael Mann, made MTV cops come to life. In fact, Mr. Thomas Carter was just as responsible for making "Miami Vice" the show it was when he directed the very first episode which was a TV movie.

When Don Johnson said when asked about if they could reboot this series, he thoughtfully said anything was possible, but this show was from a very specific time and place, and that would be hard to capture again. (my paraphrasing). I agree - the 80s were special in a lot of ways. Loved the fashion and the energy. I was also young then :-) Thanks for this video!

I remember living in the USSR. All foreign things were banned. Content was smuggled in randomly. Bits of taped television. I remember watching a single episode of Miami Vice with maybe 100 other people, on a small TV. We didn't know it was a TV show. We didn't have TV shows like that. The format itself was foreign to us. We had no idea what was happening and why, but we still watched. To us it was an exotic movie.

I think a lot of it had to do with the slow burn of the movie. People wanted a high octane guns blazing action movie with cool cars, hot women, and high fashion. They got a modernized Miami Vice with international crime syndicates that follows the original MV episode dramatic narrative. You can pick out different moments that came straight from the show such as Trudy getting kidnapped with a bomb put on her and an ending gun fight.

The show should absolutely come back. It should be more like the first couple seasons though. There is great nostalgia for '80s neon lights, style, music boats, etc. If this was brought back and done well it would be one of my favorite things on TV. As someone who lived through the '80s and was born in 79 you don't have a proper perspective to even judge a show like Miami Vice because you were not there. There is great nostalgia for that decade and the show could absolutely be a huge hit if it was done right. They could recapture everything great about the '80s and make a great cop show again but the trickiest part would probably be casting. It would have to be someone who reminds you of the original Miami Vice cast but would be new at the same time. If they had the right body language, style, wardrobe and direction it could be done right. It would be very tricky but I wouldn't doubt if this did happen sometime due to how much people still like Miami Vice.

I never looked at it that way, but that Wolf does like to howl, and line producer for the show was his final stop before "Law & Order". Lots of "Ripped from the Headlines" stuff on Vice, so Wolf really made his presence felt, but he wasn't the Mann.

stylistically. technically. unofficially. MIAMI VICE lasted (the first) two seasons, bookend by the Calderone saga with the masterpiece pilot and the devastatingly heartbreaking finale Sons and Lovers.

@@SIKE01 For sure, as Season 3 had a completely different feel all the way around. Even going back and watching the series multiple times, 'Sons and Lovers' to me feels like an ending (even with Tubbs reading Calderone's "I'll be back!" at the cemetery; a certain kind of irony there). I'm not saying that's bad though, in retrospect I'm glad the show tried to go a different way, as the series was all about breaking new ground. I think Season 3 has the best stories, but I also feel the tone is a bit clinical & detached, like the material & presentation is a bit cold around the heart and at arm's length. So I'm glad that the entire series isn't that way, but for a season (I admit that Season 4 has a problem with TOO MANY tones) I like it.

This show was what I called a ‘down by law’ phenomenon amongst my generation. We ALL watched Miami Vice. The show changed television and influenced everything from men’s clothing trends to what music was popular at the time. And it was also a wonderful starting point for some of our most popular and talented actors. Julia Roberts , Kyra Sedgwick, Stanley Tucci, Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne and Helena Bonham Carter were just a few of the actors who got their starts on the show. And if you all still want to get your Vice fix check out STARZ Encore Action at 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and there are NO commercials!

I remember watching this before most TV's were manufactured with Stereo audio, The local FM station would synchronize the broadcast (simulcast) with the episode on TV but in Stereo with vastly greater frequency and dynamic range. So you could crank up your equipment and hear this show in a way I'd never heard it before. Michael Mann seems to care about sound design a fair bit too, especially the downtown LA gun battle in Heat.

Hey, Joblo; Great job, here. You might have mentioned the "Smugglers Blues" episodes co-starring the late great Glen Frey of The Eagles. He wasn't a very good actor, but it was kinda cool seeing him mix it up with Crockett and Tubbs. He also wrote the title theme music for the 2 episodes. It's a fact that the sale of home VCR's went through the roof when Miami Vice was up against the mighty "Dallas" in the same time slot. You could watch Dallas, and record Miami Vice, and have it for Desert! I sure did. It was a Friday ritual in my home! **** Suggestion; How about a "WTF Happened to Crime Story?", another great but forgotten show from the 80's? It was also produced by Michael Mann. I actually liked Crime Story a little better than MV. Some folks agree with me, too. Thanks for all of your hard work! You content is first rate, and extremely enjoyable!

Miami Vice is a genre defining tv classic that is a time capsule of the 1980's, and would not have worked beyond that era. The first 2 seasons are classic Vice but since Micheal Mann & composer Jan Hammer left midway in Season 3 the show took on a different tone. With the incoming new composer Tim Truman and producer Dick Wolf, the remaining seasons lost the pastels of the first 2 seasons and became more of the template for Wolf's later successful long running Law & Order franchise. That's not to say the episodes were weak, but they were a mixed batch i certainly liked the 3 parter Mirror Image, Hostile Takeover and Redemption in Blood. But for me the show's best episodes are from season 2 with the likes of Out where the buses don't run, Payback & Finale Sons & Lovers being among the best of the bunch. I never really saw this show during it's original run, bar the odd episode, as at that time I watched more of Knight Rider, The A Team, Macgyver, LA Law and Airwolf but I did catch up on the show on DVD in the early 2000's. One thing I noticed that nobody ever comments on is how the show seems to recycle character names like Guitteraz, Guzman and Montoya several times sometimes even being mentioned in different episodes within the same season. The show really couldn't be remade as it is a product of it's time and even Mann himself failed to kickstart to what was supposed to be the start of a film franchise with the edgy 2006 film ( which owed more to Manns films Heat & Collateral than it did the original Miami Vice). The film had a really cool line which sums it up really well "Do you understand the meaning of the word foreboding, it means badness is happening right now."

Missed a huge element to the undercover work. Tubbs was the "dealer", Crocket was the "smuggler" when it came to working their way into the criminal elements. As such, Crocket kept the "persona" up as a smuggler even OUT of the office in order to keep his cover going for as long as possible. That is why the show really works. Even when not "on the job", Crocket and Tubbs still maintained a sort of "ongoing undercover" lifestyle that constantly provided additional material to work with.

The major problem with the later aesthetics is that Miami is a COLORFUL city to film. When you make the colors less vibrant and make dark, you’re making it more like any other big city that had a crime problem in the 80’s. The colorful and stylish vibes of the city is what made 1980’s -90’s Miami so memorable and Iconic as a city, even with the violence of the Cocaine cowboys era.
