WTF Happened to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze hit theatres almost exactly one year after its predecessor, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, hit theatres and became a surprise runaway hit, grossing $135 million at the box office. It helped that it opened at the height of “Turtlemania” when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were riding a wave of popularity based on the line of action figures, comic books and the Saturday morning cartoon show. Feeling the need to cash in before the fad was over, New Line and Golden Harvest threw the sequel into production but notably made some changes, which included adopting a more kid-friendly tone. When the movie opened, the reaction from the kid fans was mixed. Where was Casey Jones? Why did Donatello and Raphael sound different? What’s the deal with Vanilla Ice, and why was the actress playing April O’Neil different?
On the whole, the movie was a success, although it grossed significantly less than the first film on double the budget. Still, overseas it underperformed drastically. Co-star Ernie Reyes Jr parlayed his success in the movie into another New Line action flick called Surf Ninjas. Eventually, a third Ninja Turtles movie would see the light of day - but the law of diminishing returns had kicked in. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze’s rushed journey to the big screen. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go! This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written and narrated by Mathew Plale and edited by Juan Jiminez. Do you have fond memories of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze? Parents complained the original film was too violent for their kids, so this and the 3rd film were made lighter. That was the problem with the 2nd and 3rd where they were solely like the 80s cartoon, whereas the original film worked because it found the right balance between the darker comics and lighthearted cartoon

Nail on the head. It's why the first film finds an appeal that can go beyond what would have been expected, even now. II is entirely remembered for the nostalgia alone and III....well, III is III. At least it had the turtles wearing samurai armor and being enough to say "That would look cool on an action figure".

Plus it always annoyed me , , , Shredder was holding mutagen ooze one minute, then he is mutated with what ? grey metal ? And his clothes mutated too ? ? This movie needs a high-budget directors Re-cut edition , , first remove Vanilla Ice completely , , use some amazing CGI moments as fill in , make small 3 wheeled pedistal with a Krang brain on top , move in next to Shredder who landed on a wood dock laying on his back , , have Krang inject him with a mysterious BLUE fluid sparking his gradual change into "Super Shredder" , alter some of the Turtle/Shredder dialogue, then shredder smacks around the turtles for a bit , the Super Shredder says something like " Sorry to CUT this short but I have Bigger things to do instead of knocking you shelled freaks around" then he turns to a lower wall , shoulder-attacks and bust through wall into subway tunnels making clean get away from the turtles , , leaving door open to possible better sequels , , , , idk sounds good to me anyhoo , , ,👍👽

The first movie was so much better. It dealt with adult themes that have aged well, but was still okay to watch as a kid despite some parents complaints. My wife and I still watch it every 5 years or so. Raphael's anger in the first film resonated with me even as a 6 year old. I was always Raphael when we played Turtles. The second one was fun when I was young, but I always noticed the lack of weapons and the lighter tone and less violence. It's not as easy to watch as an adult.

That's why for me, it was the sequel that started the downfall of the trilogy. It got too lighthearted. TMNT 3 was just an after thought. Someone pointed this out and a lot of folks can get angry all they want but at least the third one brought back out their weapons and had better fight choreography. Yeah, it may be 3 fight sequences but it was 3 long fight sequences despite the film not being up to par with the previous films.

Honestly, I loved secret of the ooze as a kid. It felt more true to the animated series with its silliness while the first movie was more based on the comics with its dark tone. I just wish TMNT 3 was done better justice by adding better story, and adding new villains and hero’s based of the cartoon and action figures like Krang or Baxter Stockman and his robotic Mousers. Bottom line, it’s best to give the fans what they want since they’re the ones helping the franchise make the money.

There’s one small change that I think would’ve drastically improved the film. The issue with this is that unlike the first film, there’s no major arc for any of the characters. In the original, it was Raphael learning how dangerous his anger is, and learning to fit in as a member of a team, as opposed to being by himself One major missed opportunity in Secret of the Ooze, is not giving Donatello an arc despite setting up one. When the turtles are told they were accidents, Donatello takes it the hardest, believing they were special, but having to accept they aren’t. And it kind of ends there. Donatello learning this, questioning not only their purpose as a whole, but also his purpose in it. He starts to see himself as nerdy one, with the lamest weapon, the worst one liners, who just doesn’t fit in with the rest. Donatello is the one who walks out on the group, learning on his own who he is, The Other turtles being defeated in the junkyard demonstrating how invaluable Donatello was, And at the last minute, Donatello shows up, believing in himself, and single-handedly rescuing his brothers with his brain, Bo staff, and help from Splinter, The moral being, the best part of yourself is highlighted by having those around you who celebrate what makes you special.

I know it'll never happen, but I would love to see a live action (or at this point even CGI) movie that does Michael Zulli's 3 issue story arc of the original run of the comic. Eastman and Laird were way too busy with the cartoon, films, and toys to write the comics during the late 80s and early 90's so there were other writers and almost half of the comics from the initial run don't follow a linear story. Donatello questioning about him and his brothers (as well as heir Dad's purpose) is a good subject that the Michael Zulli issues focuses on, as one of the turtles is near death from their battle with the foot clan, and he loses one of his arms. We then follow him through a journey that's not quite heaven or hell, while the remaining turtles and splinter try to hide from Shredder. It was really dark and had great artwork, as the turtles looked way more primal. They didn't even wear headbands. And like every issue of the original ru, it's in black and white.

In the UK they renamed the cartoon show to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles because the conotations of ninja and their use of weapons you could make in the home was excessive to the BBFC. We never even had a cut of Enter the Dragon with the nunchucks at that point in time. It was relaxed later but was spawned from early "video nasties", particularly any that used crossbows.

Germany also got the edited UK version of both the TV show and the movies. All three Ninja Turtles movies were additionally censored in germany, but it was a weird kind of censorship. At the time the german ratings board really reacted allergic to anything related to martial arts, it was so bad that even a low violence comedy like Jackie Chan's City Hunter was rated 18+ after some cuts. So for the Turtles to get the 12+ rating they edited every fight scene with cartoon sounds to make them feel less violent.

Nah. This was my favorite one of the 3. I watched it all the time. And still throw it on at times. It's a fun watch.

The right way to bring the Ninja Turtles to life: · Hire 4 five-feet-tall Olympic stuntman and train them in Ninjitsu, skating, bodybuilding, and dancing. · Don't put creepy, heavy, and hot animatronic suits on the stuntmen. Instead, use green body-paint and turtle prosthetics for the head, hands, feet, and shells. · Don't make any crappy sequels.

2:39 The turtles’ ninja skills don’t come from the ooze. They were taught to them by their rat sensei Splinter. The first movie makes that pretty damn clear.

Who cares about ooze gelatin, the real banger was the limited edition Hostess Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pies. They were green with some kind of pudding inside.

This movie should have been Shredder taking the ooze within the first 10 minutes of the movie and the Turtles trying to take him down

Of course I loved this when I was a kid but as an adult i feel let down, especially after finding out about the Utrom reveal that was in the script.

I loved the cartoon, already had a few action figures and then the neighbor came up with a bootleg of TMNT II. So this was the first TMNT movie I saw. And I absolutely loved the movie. I will have watched it at least 6 times that weekend. A while later we rented TMNT I. And although I think this is definitely the best TMNT movie right now. I liked TMNT II much more at the time. Of course it has everything to do with age. The 9 year old Dirk found the Farm part in TMNT I just boring and all he wanted was fight scenes with his favorite heroes. He didn't notice the violence in part 1 (logical if you've already seen Childs Play, The Terminator, Commando, Halloween etc etc) and so I thought TMNT II was at least equal if not more fun in terms of action. Now I like TMNT I better but TMNT II remains special to me and still a very nice movie that I now watch with my 7 year old daughter.

Say what you want, I still love the movie. It wasn't even close to the greatness of the first film, but it had enough of the heart that I was just happy to see the turtles again. It wasn't until the third that the series fell completely into despair. As for the new movies, I love the brotherhood aspect that they managed to achieve. The problems were entirely elsewhere.

I was apart of turtle mania when this came out as a kid. And was extra excited for the movie. And left the movie theater as a kid disappointed.. Knowing that it was too... Soft. 😂 I was like why they joking too much and not fighting.
