As far as live-action superheroes go, fans today don't know how good they've got it. With both Zack Snyder's Justice League and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming out recently, it's time to look back to a time when many had to make do with much less sophisticated superheroes. In the seventies, big-screen superheroes were MIA. Things were a bit better on the small screen, with shows like Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk doing well in the ratings. This led to the creation of this week's Gone But Not Forgotten subject, The Amazing Spider-Man. A decidedly low-tech take on the Marvel superhero, this short-lived series starred the likable Nicholas Hammond (The Sound of Music and recently Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time in Hollywood) as Peter Parker, aka The Amazing Spider-Man. Join us as we examine this campy but often endearing show.

Today's Marvel fans as well as Marvel Studios would'nt go for that cause Spider-Man is literally the Mickey Mouse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Those scenes of the stuntman actually climbing up the side of a skyscraper, shown in a long shot, stayed with me since childhood. Yes, upon recent rewatch the green screen bits do stand out more than they did in the 80s but the rest of the practical moves are unbelievably good.

@@modmaker7617 Sorta. Himitsu Sentai Gorenger and Jakkā Dengekitai, were already out and in the can from 1975 to 1977. But the word on it, stated that, Jakkā Dengekitai, was such a failure, that it was nearly ended Sentai. What Supaidaman (1978) did was alter the format, forever going forward: Introducing the 11th commandment of: Thou shall fight giant robots, with giant robots. And from there Super Sentai, was created. Super alluding to the Giant Robots and monster format. And for a long time, Toei did not consider Gorenger and Dengekitai, apart of Super Sentai until one of the later anniversaries, where they were finally retroactively added in towards the number count of Super Sentai series, as they were just considered Sentai. So without Marveller / Leopardon, there would be no Super Sentai, which immediately started with Battle Fever J (1979). BFJ, which ironically took away the fantastical element of henshin and just made it a mere costume to put on, though I recall they were protective of sorts, until they killed off one of the Battle Fever J members and replaced him. Contrast all that to HSG which didnt really get into the morph aspect, but man-o-man, JAKQD... went overboard with henshin, even though Big One, was more like HSG, could morph on command. .

Bill Bixby's death was absolutely the reason why there was no cross over. You have to remember the last TV movie of the Hulk premiered in 1990 (Death of the Incredible Hulk). Bixby had every intention of bringing Banner and the Hulk back, but his illness soon after shut him down to concentrate on his own personal life, so those projects, including the crossover with Spiderman, were never put into production. Bixby's TV movies were what kept the Hulk alive long after that series was over, so this crossover would bring back Spiderman as well. It would have been tremendous.

Even with its many flaws I absolutely loved this show growing up. Being a child of the 80s I rented the pilot episode at my local video store and I must’ve watched it a thousand times. Even though our local video store didn’t have every episode available, the episodes I wasn’t able to rent were shown on tv sporadically allowing me to video tap the episodes I hadn’t seen. Like you I actually really enjoyed Nicholas Hammond’s portrayal of Peter Parker and I thought the Spidey stunts preformed by Fred Waugh were great considering he did them in real life. I didn’t mind that the shows producers didn’t have the budget to bring Spider-Man’s rogues gallery to life. With that being said my one complaint is that Spidey didn’t do any wise cracking when interacting with the thugs he fought throughout the series. I also thought Micheal Pataki was great as Captain Barbera and he should’ve been cast to play J. Jonah Jameson. If he had a mustache he would look just like him. Overall I think they made the best with what they had and I’ll always have very fond memories watching this show. This was a great video and I’m glade you gave the 1970s Live Action Spiderman tv series some love and attention.

Nicholas Hammond was the perfect '70s/Bronze-Age of Comics, Spider-Man. He was great as Peter. Smart but not nerdy, shy but not a pathetic loser. That's the way Peter Parker was in the 1970's. Also the infamous cocky, sarcastic, humor of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is there if you listen for it. Parker's struggle with money and trying to do the right thing despite who he might hurt is in the late '70s tv show.

theirs no batman animated tv shows anymore that adults can watch only shite like batman brave & bold, imagine a 12 part 1 hour episodes using the 3D graphics to make the arkham game trailers starting from the origins to the dark knight returns, how amazing was the trailer for arkham city & that was ps3, imagine ps5 arkham esque long continues stories, it would be cheaper to produce than batwoman & would be actually good, it could even be an HBO max exclusive but those ass hats don't know what their doing so it will never happen😟😔

@@mjmellan CGI cartoons suck though....and that would be the most boring show ever, stale as hell like 5 episodes in, look at Wandavision.....people were already growing tired of the TV gimmick what 3 or 4 episodes in?? ouch and the reason a space ship/station show can go so long with the same location is we see different sections all the time bridge, engineering, ten forward/the bar, medical, hangar, entertainment venues like holodeck, sports arenas, theater etc oh and mess hall and with stations specifically we see parks, promenade's, markets, slums etc so it's never just the same spots also think man it's a game series, it won't translate to a fun show very well cus of the lack of detecting crimes, gathering clues, interactions with Gordon etc and you have to think, they stretched 1 episode over 12 hours or so of game then roughly 3 episodes over double that for city and the rest.....a lot of the fat would need to be trimmed off and better writing for dialog and character action/interactions, better pacing for a show and proper explanations for what's going on, frankly i never understood what was up in those games and I'm a veteran of the animated series lolz no, the 1990 animated show totally got batman right and will remain as the best batman ever, the arkham games are okay but not a template for a show, that Assault on Arkham movie was cool though

This show was my first introduction to Spiderman as a kid and I LOVED IT. You pay good homage to it here. It gave a realism to the character and put him 8n real life situations. The wall climbing stunts were amazing and you wo t see that today. I dont care what Stan Lee says you couldn't have someone swinging through NYC in the 70s and supervillans would have been camp. This was gritty. Loved Robert F Simons J Jonah. Disagree that his character changed, it just added more depth. He was cantankerous but had a heart of gold and he thought Spidey was a menace - not too dissimilar from the comics which I didn't read til later. Also loved Captain (Hannah) Barberra your typical 70s cop. Hammond was a great mature personification of Parker. I used to look forward to it on Friday nights in the early 80s in the UK. Plus the music by Stu Philips and also from the Pilot was so cool and funky.

Hammerhead, Tombstone, Wilson Fisk, some characters like Doc Ock I do believe could have been done on a budget in the 70’s and I say that because there are a lot of examples in film that made incredible leaps in film techniques & practical effects from that era. Studio film executives back then were more financially and creatively hesitant, when compared to how producers and showrunnerrs are ballsy enough today. I think the problem was that they lacked a person like Kevin Feige on their creative teams among the studios.

Think you got it backwards. Today studios and execs are far less ballsy and more penny pinching today when it comes to tv then back in the day. Also it's pretty good that they lacked a Kevin Feige because he turned out to be quite the fraud.

Two different scenes from this series always depicted a grounded version of Parker such as lamenting over his broken camera or how how he earnestly pleads to a chopper pilot to take him over the Empire State building while admitting that he has no money to pay for the ride which is a stark contrast to the recent cash grab over bloated mess of turd in which a neutered Spiderpunk tries to be an Ironman knockoff. I was also obsessed with those "elbow patches" on Parker's suit more the the Spidey costume itself.

Marlee Matlin and Holly Hunter both won Oscars as Best Lead Actress. Both did not talk at all in their performances. Point being, Danny Seagren, even though he only played the character in short segments and without dialogue, he is indeed the first actor to play Spider-Man in costume physically and live action for television. Nicholas Hammond was the second actor to perform the role of Spider-Man on television and since the episode was released theatrically overseas is actually the first actor to play the part in a theatrically released film. Paul Soles is still first.

It's true that unless the show was animated, getting Spidey's rogues gallery was going to be a challenge. Had this show on on a couple of vhs tapes as a kid thanks to my grandparents, and read spider-man comics faithfully. Loved it just for the sheer fact the character was in live action (back at a time when it was virtually the only thing we had haha.). Hammond apparently lives out here in Australia, and I recall he sometimes popped up on morning tv programs when spider-man films dropped at the cinema, or sound of music had an anniversary. I too hope one day the full show pops on streaming. Cheers for the nostalgia video!

Uncle Ben being already dead before Peter gets bitten by the spider somewhat ruins the whole origin story since Uncle Ben's death is a big part of how Spider-Man came to understand that with great power comes great responsibility. My guess is the lack of Dead Uncle Ben in 1977 is the reason why they killed him like 8 times in Spider-Man 3 during flashbacks, for the sake of balance.

A little late but some villains could have been done such as: Kraven like you mentioned but also his brother Chameleon. Plus Mr. White from the Deadly Dust eps could have been retrofitted to be Silvermane and the Maggia. Maybe even an appearance from The Crime Master…also who wouldn’t have liked to see a 1970’s live action Morbius.

I did find the show on DVD. Five years ago at San Diego Comic Con, there was a guy that was selling hard to find DVDs of movies and TV shows. Some were on VHS and Some were on DVD. I was able to find a copy of the Amazing Spider-Man. It may have been a bootleg copy, i’m not sure but the quality while viewing it, seemed pretty good and the picture and content on the case, looked professionally done by a company.

I have vague memories of this as a kid. It stands out because until superhero movies began to be popular again, this was the only real live action most people would remember. Didn't help that in the UK, I don't remember many reruns or home releases, if any, at the time.

I think they actually could've done a supervillain or two. Like you said, Kraven and Mysterio were easy. And Electro too. You know how many TV shows had at least one scene with electricity being fired? It was doable since the 60's. And the suit (if they woukd've bit the bullet and done wouldve been easy). Doc Ock was doable, but wouldve taken more time and money so very unlikely. But man the 60's and 70's had lots more (now forgotten villains) that we liked back then: Hypno-Hustler, Mindworm, Gibbon, Grizzly, Kangaroo, Morbius, the Marauder and on and on. Heck Kingpin is just a fat bald guy and Crime Master and Boss Man (Big Boss? Big Man?) were just masked "guys" in dress suits and fedoras. But the ones we were expecting most of all were the Enforcers; a big goon in a turtleneck, a short guy in a classy dress suit and hat and a Texan with a lasso? Supervillains AND realistic; best of both worlds.

14:55 He also might have been talking about the death of Bixby's 6 year-old son in 1981... or the suicide of his ex-wife shortly thereafter, which Bixby may have contributed to by openly blaming her for being negligent. Yeah, he had a lot of dark shit going on during those last couple of seasons of The Incredible Hulk.

It affected the show in interesting ways. There's one episode of The Incredible Hulk, "Proof Positive" that has no Bill Bixby, supposedly because of court proceedings with his divorce. The producers made the most of it by doing a story from the point of view of Banner's dogged pursuer, reporter Jack McGee. McGee doesn't know who the Hulk is and Banner, played by stuntmen and doubles, is never clearly seen.
