Upon winning his second Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the western DJANGO UNCHAINED, Quentin Tarantino wanted to ride it high…by helming another western, but getting THE HATEFUL EIGHT to the big screen-like, the really big screen-wasn’t easy. Plagued by uncooperative weather, technological tip-toeing, two significant leaks, and more, THE HATEFUL EIGHT was one of Tarantino’s most difficult shoots and one of his worst-received films - initially.
So tighten up that noose and tune up the Martin guitar as we find out…WTF Happened to this movie?!

I know why it's underrated, even as a Tarantino fan, I had to rewatch it to understand it. The story seems pointless until you realize the character arc of Walton Goggins. He starts off a Confederate racist son-of-a-bitch, but in the end, is bound by loyalty to Sam Jackson's character. When you understand this redemption arc, it makes sense.

I'm surprised that someone think it's his "lesser" or "worst" movie. I enjoyed it way more than I did Django or even Basterds, it's much more rewatchable imo, the cast is great, the atmosphere is superb. One problem I noticed is that tension oftentimes is very quickly relieved by irony or some gag, but other than that it's a really immersive movie. Also I'm surprised to learn that the whole thing took less than one year to film and edit, with all the complications and difficulties around it.

I was shocked watching this movie because it flew under my radar which was weird for a Tarantino film, also the movie was excellent, one of his best for sure. Not sure why it was under-recognized, pretty sure it had nothing to do with him hating cops or being a "misogynist" though. Maybe because the scale wasn't as large compared to his other works? Django is an entire world, same with Bastards and even Once upon a time. Hateful 8 takes place all inside a cabin but to me the entire vibe of the movie felt very comfortable, like you're actually there drinking coffee during a blizzard. And the story was extremely well paced, dialogue was clever and witty, acting was phenomenal (Especially Walton Goggins). Each character was so intriguing as to be almost comical, like the movie is a satire on the mystery genre.

We could SO get a badass sequel. Let's say that the Domingo Gang was actually not joking and actually did have more gang members waiting at Red Rock....That could be an awesome sequel if they take it to Red Rock with the other very much alive gang members terrorizing the town. We all know that Tarantino would put together another amazing cast for it. I would freaking love if Chris Mannix survived the first movie...Just call the movie "Red Rock". I'd go see it LOL

I don't think this was a bad movie, but it was certainly a hard film to watch. I got the DVD through my Netflix subscription, and NOBODY in my home wanted to watch it with me past the first few minutes. My sister and her fiance stayed for maybe ten minutes between then. My wife trailed into the room during the guitar scene, but I was the only person who watched it from beginning to end. Even having watched it, I'm hard-pressed to give it another viewing because the characters are all thoroughly despicable; while the story is engaging, it's not something that cries out for repeat viewing like THE TERMINATOR, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, THE GODFATHER, DEMON KNIGHT, ALIENS, or THE PROPHECY do for me.

@todo5183 I think perhaps I was too negative the first time. The film is beautiful. I really mean that. It's gorgeous. From the bone-chilling snow at the outset to the gruesome bloodshed--even the poison-induced vomiting--it's all captivating. The characters are each compelling in a myriad of ugly (and rarely noble) ways. The motivations are relatively straightforward, so it's a matter of, "how will these people interact, and who will survive?" The film has great bathos and pathos, and even without a protagonist or a hero, it felt cathartic to finish. I was sad none of my family wanted to complete the experience with me.

One of my favourite movies. Maybe my favourite QT movie. That said I "hated" my first viewing. Thought it was slow and hoping it would getting going to the good stuff. Many years later I revisited understanding its pace beforehand made me appreciate and chew up every scene just for the acting. Might go watch it tonight!!

Very similar experience. I kept waiting for the typical "good parts" and found myself getting bored but after watching it I couldn't overcome this feeling of wanting to watch it again and when I did it made me appreciate all the fantastic dialog and really soak in the immersive setting.

DJANGO and Inglorious Basterds get all the glory, this one I think is the superior of those. Imo.

The Hateful Eight is my top 3 favourite QT films. Behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Jackie Brown". Love it.

So the host/speaker has clearly never seen the movie, evidenced by how he pronounces Maj. Marquis Warren’s first name. These channels have no respect for us.

It was pretty entertaining as always, but the self-parody is a good word to describe my feeling about this one and Django. He can't seem to end them in a non self-conscious way, he seems to think more about ending them in a Tarantino way, with the typical tongue-in-cheek violently happy and cynical tone, rather than writing a good ending that serves the story. The difference is that Django was much more memorable.

The hateful eight wasn't negatively received at release I just feel like it went under the radar but I feel that was mainly because of Django Unchained being such a huge hit

The more I see The hateful eight, the more I am a fan of this movie, and if you let me be frank, this film is as underrated as Death Proof, however The hateful eight will gain prestige as time goes by.

Jesus Christ, the entire movie was practically a carbon copy of Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, only with guns!

I sorta-kinda understand why The Hatefull 8 is considered "lesser" of Tarantino's movies. But since even his worst is far better than vast majority of Hollywood production...

A bad Tarantino movie is better than 90% of the schlock out there.

That’s nuts that it’s his lowest acclaimed film. i had no idea. this is his Unforgiven. his Open Range. It’s nearly perfect for the genre. maybe that’s the problem. it’s too true to the genre and not wacky enough like django or Basterds.
