Gravity is a simple concept, but the “why” and the “how” are magnificently complicated. How much of gravity do we actually understand?

Newton’s Laws of Motion

“Newton worked in many areas of mathematics and physics. He developed the theories of gravitation in 1666, when he was only 23 years old. Some twenty years later, in 1686, he presented his three laws of motion in the ‘Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis.’”
Isaac Newton: The Man Who Discovered Gravity

“Some argue that these ideas, while not scientific in the sense that we understand them now, helped him think radical thoughts that shaped his most important work, including his theories of gravity.”
What is Gravity?

“Anything that has mass also has gravity. Objects with more mass have more gravity. Gravity also gets weaker with distance. So, the closer objects are to each other, the stronger their gravitational pull is.”

No matter where you are in the universe, galaxies will be accelerating away from you because Space-Time is expanding. Mass, on the other hand, can move within space-time while it is expanding. The force of attraction we call Gravity is an illusion created by the resistance of all matter to the Space-Time accelerated expansion. Example: If the Earth, tree and apple were all expanding at the same accelerated rate and the apple let loose of the tree, the Earth's expansion (although still pushing the tree at the same rate) would no longer be pushing the apple. Because the apple is on it's own , it no longer accelerates at Earth's acceleration speed and the Earth would then expand into it. Please note: The denser a mass is the more it weighs (resistance to space-time expansion) but it's gravity is not changed. If I have a ball made of lead and one exactly the same size made of foam (in a vacuum) they will both fall at the same rate. That means, the denser one is not attracted to the Earth any more than the lesser dense one.

A bunch of the comments seem a bit confused. Yes, we often model gravity as a field, but no, that doesnt stop it being a force.* In fact we regularly think of all the forces in terms of fields these days. (See Quantum Field Theory.) Nor does it really answer what gravity is exactly, or why it interacts in the way it does. *To go in to more tedious detail, as far as I am aware the fundamental forces are named as such simply because they are currently irreducible interactions. Thats it, there is nothing more complicated that makes a force a force. So whether its by field, particle, instantaneous as in Newtons conception, its still an irreducible interaction and therefore a fundamental force. Though Im aware this gets a bit more complicated because there are technically 3 fundamental forces to date: Strong, Electroweak, and Gravity, and weve made good progress to just 2, but a lot of people use and will likely continue to use the older four: Strong, Weak, Electromagnetism, and Gravity because, given the conditions required to get Electroweak to reveal itself, its generally more useful to keep them separate in day to day sciencing.

Could it be that gravity is not a force at all but simply a property of spacetime? Spacetime is bent by mass, all objects traveling through spacetime follow its contours, so roll downhill toward other masses. That they aren't being effected by the mass but rather just the contour of the spacetime.

AL's theory of gravity..... The current theory is simply "mass attracts mass". AL believes mass of an object causes gravity, but Mass doesn't create gravity. Objects in space take up area. This area was previously occupied by the fabric of space (spacetime). The amount of area taken up by the object depends in the density of the mass. Black holes being the most dense objects, so they displace the most spacetime. This displacement of spacetime causes an abundance, or multiples, of spacetime around objects in space. This alone causes a tiny amount of gravity on the surface of said objects. Because our universe is constantly expanding, extremely strong gravity is created. The further from the surface you are, the less multiples of spacetime there is, the weaker gravity gets. It's not gravity that reaches out so far across the universe. It is the warped spacetime, caused by the mass and density of the object, that reaches out so far. And when 2 of these warped spacetimes contact each other, the objects trajectory is altered towards each other. This warped spacetime is also why light and radio waves slow down as they travel close to massive objects.

Gravity is not a force, it is the bending of space time. Space time is any mathematical model that fuses the three dimensions of space and the one dimension of time into a single four-dimensional continuum. Two particles with mass change space time between them and causes the space to shrink with time between them so they get closer and closer without actually moving. When the apple becomes dislodged from the tree, the space between the tree and the center of earth starts shrinking exponentially as time goes on till the space is gone and the apple reaches a surface that stops it. Before the apple is dislodged, the same thing is still happening just the tree is pulling it up from the shrinking space. Your chair is pulling you up from the shrinking space between you and the center of earth. The earth is not moving in a circle around the sun, the earth is moving in a straight line, if it was moving in a circle, centrifugal force would throw you off it. The sun's mass is warping space time, the earth is just simply travelling through this warped space which causes it to curve around the sun. The space is curved around the sun due to its mass. Light is affected by this to because it travels the same curved path around object of mass. Now, the question is, what causes mass to curve space time?

"Supposing that the bodies act upon the surrounding space causing curving of the same, it appears to my simple mind that the curved spaces must react on the bodies, and producing the opposite effects, straightening out the curves. Since action and reaction are coexistent, it follows that the supposed curvature of space is entirely impossible - But even if it existed it would not explain the motions of the bodies as observed. Only the existence of a field of force can account for the motions of the bodies as observed, and its assumption dispenses with space curvature. All literature on this subject is futile and destined to oblivion. So are all attempts to explain the workings of the universe without recognizing the existence of the ether and the indispensable function it plays in the phenomena. My second discovery was of a physical truth of the greatest importance. As I have searched the entire scientific records in more than a half dozen languages for a long time without finding the least anticipation, I consider myself the original discoverer of this truth, which can be expressed by the statement: There is no energy in matter other than that received from the environment." --- Nikola tesla

@@PatrykKarter that means that whatever we do. Its of no real use as it has 0 impact on ANYTHING in the universe besides our own tiny ball of rock. We are dust particles to dust particles in size. Even tho we are with billions. Everything we have achieved so far is nothing compared to whats out there. We have so much to explore. That we would never be able to do that. Our curiousity is killing us for more knowledge but we will never be able to grasp anything outside our solar system for AT LEAST the next 250 years We can never leave our Local Group as everything is TOO BIG. We are limited to what we got. Our Local Group. Our lifetime. The suns lifetime. All will be in vain. Because we cannot go any further due to the sheer size of everything. That kind of insignificant. You can be optimistic about it. But remember that you won't live to see the 1st human going out of our solar system. Let alone enter another solar system. Could it be that gravity is the result of the additive effect of intermolecular forces? Electrostatic or hydrophobic interactions are not particularly strong forces but can get stronger if more molecules contribute to the interactions. In other words, at what point can we say that matter is being attracted because of gravity and not because of intermolecular forces or the other way around?

Force (physics) does not exist physically in the same way that an object with mass, thus making it “not” the initial cause of pushing, pulling, shaping objects, motion, work or being a Vector Quantity (Magnitude + Direction). In physics, the word, “Force” as we know it, turns out to be nothing more than an expression to express an idea like one would use the word “Love” to express one's feelings. But, physics and in mathematics, still use “Force” as thou it were something physical that could enable the initial cause of motion making it counterintuitive. Example: Without applying the Energy from within you, choose an object of your choices to push and pull by simply applying “only” the Force or Net Force. Meaning that Energy (applied energy) is the origin of motion and not “Force”. Once Energy (E) is applied, it creates what is known as Momentum (p). When this Momentum (object in motion) comes in contact with another object(s), it makes a surface contact that will enable you to push and pull. Example: Ep=ma, Ep=mv and so on. Note: Ep is not to be confused as Kinetic Energy in any way. Momentum represents things like work, wave, gravity, light, lightning, tsunami, earthquake, current, electricity, motion, magnetism, hurricane, etc. Without Energy, there is no Momentum. Without Momentum, there is no surface contact on an object(s) to push, pull, work, shaping objects, motion, gravity, etc. Momentum does not and cannot exist without the applied Energy that creates it. Energy and Momentum or “Ep” is the one and only common denominator that links all fundamental forces of nature. Without Ep, all fundamental forces of nature would be inert and non-existence. Energy is energy, but it’s when Energy (E) is being applied that creates the Momentum (p) making it the initial cause of motion. Example: Ep. By applying the right amount of Energy, nothing is immovable or unstoppable. ~ Guadalupe Guerra

So i had a query regarding the supposed description of gravitational force as mentioned distorting the fabric of space and time by an object (like the sun in our solar system) while creating a "pull" towards it. I'm having a hard time imagining the scenario three dimensionally. Also, shouldn’t all planets move around the sun in every direction? Like electrons? Why are the planets orbiting in a solar plain or the solar systems in galactic plain? A three dimentional distortion causing some kinda pull should be all around the center in all direction? As in like the atom, right?
