Spoiler Alert for those who never watched it: I feel like in the ending, James sends his clone back home so that the real him can stay back in the country. Maybe out of shame, he didn't want to face the reality of living in his rich wive's shadows and being the author of an unsuccessful book. The whole movie he wanted 'dominance' or to feel powerful, only to have it stripped away by a group of rich people, so he stayed back to probably, reclaim his 'power' by most likely, dominating poor people like the rich. A twisted cycle of the social hierarchy.

That makes a lot of sense. How else would he even explain it to his wife? He must have sent a clone to live a peaceful life with her so he can dominate the island when his rich friends aren't there. I feel like he'd be more sadistic.

I can see him sending a clone back but not with him staying just to get his 'power' back. In the end, I feel like he is too humiliated to the point where he realizes he never really was in control, so he just gives in to the weather elements of the hurricane. No human can control the weather

I will say, the actress that plays the wife Em Foster is Cleopatra Coleman they let her keep her natural accent which is a mixture of cultures. Her dad is from South Wales Australia where she grew up and her mom is Jamaican. I think that’s what you were picking up which is accurate as a mix of accents but in this case it is natural. Edit: I am also speaking from experience as I was born in Trinidad to a mother with English accent. I also watch a lot of European, English and American shows as an infant. Then I moved to the US and grew up in Brooklyn as a young teenager. My accent is all of those things 😭

This movie is fascinating to me because I feel like it’s rare to see a nepo baby explore these topics in a way that kind of captures how gross and exploitative the industries around them actually are. I’ve never had the means to experience that kind of wealth so it’s an interesting perspective to see, as long as the person isn’t softening the impact because they’re trying to not acknowledge the extent of their privilege

7:30 Yup! That’s an ADHD thing! (It’s also an autism spectrum thing but I digress. There’s a lot of co-morbidities between ADHD and autism.) It’s called sensory overload or overstimulation, it’s pretty common with people with ADHD, in some form or fashion anyway. Different people have it manifest in different ways or have an easier/more difficult time dealing with it as it can vary as to how severely it impacts your day-to-day. Anyway, this has been a tangent from a fellow person with ADHD, and former psych major, xD

I have not been diagnosed with ADHD or autism, but this is still something that can happen to anyone. If you ever feel irrationally angry or anxious at something you're seeing or hearing, that can be a sign of overstimulation. I was sitting at a table in a cafeteria once where I was surrounded by noise and movement and people and I suddenly became irrationally angry about the sound of cutlery clanking on plates and bowls. It was so overwhelming I couldn't stand it and I had to leave the situation to calm down. It doesn't happen super frequently to me but I have definitely experienced it. (It's especially common when you've been surrounded by, say, sterile colors and environments and suddenly you have an onslaught of vibrant colors and loud situations. It's overwhelming.)

(edited bc i was an asshole lmao) : this is a great comment, very informative! just my two cents for anyone who may be questioning if they have adhd: sensory overload can happen to anyone, adhd or not. many traits also mimic each other. the human brain is complex, and these traits aren't necessarily exclusive to adhd. it also doesn't mean that you don't have adhd. that's between you and a professional. psa: please get professionally diagnosed before telling people you have adhd. it's annoying to see people claiming they have adhd based off of one trait that like 99% of the population has, and self diagnosis just makes it harder for people who actually have adhd to be taken seriously or sometimes even get the help and resources we need. sincerely, someone with professionally diagnosed adhd.

This movie just like Midsommer enter into the category of movies "only make any lick of sense when you heard it's actually the director working through some personal stuff and not an actual story" for me. Infinity pool in essence is about a guy who feel inadequate and has everything around him making him feel as such (wife openly recognizing that love for him had nothing to do with marrying him), until he fantasizes about a hot fan who likes his job and she utterly destroys his ego until he realizes "hey, maybe what I needed all the time was getting over myself" to get some sort of closure. Just like Midsommer is about a messy breakup, this is about a dude's ego but with a lot of psychodelic bullshit and more sex with pet play because why not. The wife is not a real character, it's a personal projection of those feeling of being immasculated and a loser basically. Mia Goth's character is the projection of that inadequacy as a writer and a men even further.
@MaryHatake97
@MaryHatake97 Жыл бұрын
I saw this in theaters and it was definitely one big trip. Tbh I kinda liked the first half of the movie better bc it had a more interesting vibe. You had the obvious undertones about harmful tourism industries, the question of how would YOU feel if you had to watch yourself die and question your existence, and the (now oversaturated) theme of the selfishness of the ultra-rich. The ending was more action-y and I loved Mia Goth’s performance but I feel like it lost a little bit of its meaning in exchange for just being violent. Like the whole “dog” fight and blood titty just kinda lost me lol. Also, why did they want to keep him at the resort if they were going to go back home eventually anyway? I thought they were going to end up being a murder cult that posted up on the island or something. But overall, I feel like the movie succeeded in being unsettling and grotesque bc I left the theater feeling grossed out and confused but not mad about it lol.
@nbucwa6621
@nbucwa6621 Жыл бұрын
They kept him on the resort because they didn't want him to leave on his own terms, they wanted him to leave on theirs. (and idk but I can kinda imagine them having a convo along the lines of: "I already paid for the f*n clone, I wanna see them fight okay?!" and that being enough to justify them chasing him down). I think its better that it's not a murder cult per se just because of the themes of dominance and power. They don't need to kill him because he is so powerless in their eyes that there is nothing he can do to get them back or get them in trouble. That reflects real life, and how rich people treat/harm poor people, much more than them just being a bunch of serial killers. He is entertainment to them when they want him and a minor annoyance at best when they are done with him.

I also watched the movie in theaters and though I disliked the entire movie up to the end, it's blatantly a movie just meant to make the watchers uncomfortable but it's done with nearly no relevance to the actual story early on. One of my biggest gripes was the over use of Dutch angles especially when looking at the resort. They made it seem like something was off of wrong about the resort and then that went nowhere, it was the government and a few travelers. I remember thinking during one of the dinners that maybe some of the employees were part of a cult or something but all that discomfort was misplaced. Almost like it's meant to mislead us, there were a lot of cheap tricks to cover up a mediocre story. (like random prolonged shots of the ocean when the ocean had nothing to do with the story)

As someone who has interacted with media with very similar themes to Infinity Pool, I just found Infinity Pool to be absolutely terrible. It does nothing with it's concepts and just added in the s*x and explicitly violent scenes to make the movie seem grander that it was. It absolutely confounds me that so many critics like it.

I think it's interesting you brought up Gabby and her crew being hella racist to the Li Tolqans despite them technically being white cause as we know who gets to be considered "white" and "non-white" is something always in flux throughout history. They never tell us where Li Tolqa is specifically but it seems heavily coded as being a vaguely Eastern European/specifically Balkans-ish country (most of the movie was filmed in Croatia IIRC). People from that part of the world, while technically European and "white", have often been understood as, if not outright non-white, pretty far towards to the periphery of what gets considered "white" (and in the context of immigration to the US/UK basically treated as non-white e.g. look at anything a British Home Secretary has said about Slavic immigrants in the last 10 years lol). For me this was kind of one of the main themes of the movie: the racist division of the world into "white"/"non-white" or "Western"/"Eastern", and how that ultimately makes people closer to power and privilege (i.e. those considered "white" or "Western" like Gabby et al.) 1000x more barbarous and violent than the people they project non-whiteness/orientalism onto. I think that's why there were those otherwise weird out of place moments like the scene in the hella appropriative Chinese restaurant or that random cut-away to the "Bollywood dancers" in the resort. Li Tolqa is sort of like an imaginary spot where all of these violently racist/orientalist understandings of the world come together and then freaks like Gabby get unleashed on it for their own pleasure.

ohhhhh i’m fascinated to see what kennie thinks of this movie. i saw it in theaters and i was ungodly bored by a lot of it but i’m also incredibly desensitized to the majority of the kind of imagery shown in it. since the shock didn’t get me, and there really wasn’t a ton to the movie outside of that (and what was said outside the shock value has all been said and done a billion times before), i really didn’t get much of anything from it. i thought the acting was solid but i really was just bored and annoyed through the majority of it. only movie i’ve almost walked out of from annoyance alone. and i don’t mean to sound like a pretentious edgelord “ummmmm I don’t think it was really that gross” like it was gross and foul and yeah shocking, but not in any way i hadn’t seen before. and then yeah like we get it, wealth, power, and lack of consequence can and often will corrupt, we know this we all know this. would’ve been nice if the movie had anything else to say

I mean this with love in my heart and holy shit it’s crazy how people can get such different experiences out of art! I’m a trans man and Cronenberg sr.‘s films are some of my favorites of all time bc he seems to understand something about the horrors of the body that cis people don’t usually think about. Crimes of the Future and Dead Ringers in particular touched my soul, and The Fly is an all time classic imo so it’s wild to me to see someone say they’re not meant to be enjoyed

The way you described the beginning of Infinity Pool reminds me of how I felt watching Skinamarink for the first time. It's really unnerving and not much happens for the first like 40 minutes, but the middle/end of it just make your stomach turn especially when you realize what's happening. I did not like it on the first watch but after the second time, I really loved it.
