WTF Rust On A 2016 Acura?

This Acura come into the shop with a bad rust spot inside the right rear door jamb. It was very strange to see an area like this rusting out so badly on a 2016. It was so bad that it needed a new rocker panel section as well as the lower quarter panel section. Check out how it's done!

“This one’s only 4-5 years old” It’s a 2016 and it’s now 2024 It’s 8 years old. There’s this weird thing that happened in 2020 where millions of people forgot 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 happened…. Which shouldn’t be hard to remember because all those years F-ing sucked and your cost of living doubled.

I know the cavity wax will slow it down a bit but is that backer plate bare metal and won't it eventually rust back through there on that weld seam?

They're not concerned with that. It will be out of warranty for the 3rd or 4th owner and it will be their problem sadly.

That's why those of us who care will put weld through primer, just like our friend Kyle did here. The backer plate isn't bare on the back side, and the cavity wax does its job as well. This stuff holds up. I have had to replace the same quarter panel twice for a customer years apart and have seen it work.

What brand file tool is that you use and what grit? I used to spot weld drill them out but that looks WAY faster!

Belt sander with 3M 80 grit i think

+1 for the brand. It's definitely the high-quality 3M cubitron belts.

I've got a belt file I bought from matco that's been great for probably 5 years with consistent daily use. It's definitely worth spending the extra money on the 3m cubitron belts. I prefer 60 grit
