Running a Gehl Bale is an art with some science thrown in for good measure. Short, fine hay is going to pack tight no matter what you use to pick it up. My first instinct, when I saw that sad little round bale fluff out of the chamber, was to use that to test your adjustments on your small square. Glad to see you got somewhere with it. Though the end of this vid makes it look otherwise. Sorry to see that. Just an update on my end, 3rd cutting kind of sucked too. The mower kept plugging in the damp hay. The ground wouldn't dry out. My inverter had the same issues due to short wet grass & an insane wind that directed it any which way but out. The day that I wanted to bale was plagued with humidity. All the hay wanted to do was tumble in front of the pickup & roll out the sides. Then I was braking bales. Couldn't figure out why the twine on the right knotter looked like it was hammered flat. Finally figured out that I was going too fast for conditions. Had to crawl along in 1st to keep them all together. Got it done tho. There were only 51 bales on a whole two acres. They are about 75 lbs & drum tight. Of course, with that weight & amount of dampness, my usual customer turned her nose up at it. Finally, got a hold of the one neighbor who was more than happy to buy what I had. WHEW!!! Glad that's over. Got my equipment cleaned off & put away for the season. Will be having a drink or two in the near future. Then I'll be ready for another round (of hay) next year. Woo-Hoo!!! Regards!

Those old Gehl roundbalers are good for piling up like that in really dry hay. I've also learned to run the windows as far to the ends of the pickup as I can this packs the hay better on the ends the middle will fill in as you go back and forth. For getting the twine around them I swing the twine feeder over and move so the twine drags into the windrow. Once it starts feeding stop and move the feeder to the far end and work back across. There is a lot to watch on these old balers to get good bales but once you get the hang of it their not horrible.

Over here in Wisconsin, I was baling the last of this year's hay this last weekend. I might bale some marsh grass for bedding yet ( last year I baled 2 loads on Dec 24 ). Sunday Oct 11 was supposed to be sunny, but it turned out to be overcast until about sunset when the sun shone for a few minutes. The hay was higher moisture than I wanted, but rain was forecast, and this time of year it never really dries well. First bale out didn't tie, took a look and determined that I needed to back the pressure on the hyd tension off. Took it it down to the edge of the green on the gauge. I was baling a mix of grass and alfalfa, and I can tell by how the thrower is spitting them into the wagon, and how they bounce and keep or not keep their shape if the tension is too loose or if the bales are heavy or light. I have a spring broken on a hay dog under the chamber, and I haven't bothered to replace it yet. If I push the baler hard it will mis-tie on that side, so I was running a moderate speed with the tension backed off enough to make it happy. Baled a couple hundred bales of hay and around 50 bales of marsh grass to clean up what I had cut. I have never ran plastic twine. I am old school, and the plastic twine degrades slowly and gets into everything. So I cannot speak to the use of plastic twine. But on your knotter; this is a judgement call, but at some point you may just have to rebuild it completely. I did that 30+ years ago on an old New Holland baler that was built in the 60's, and it really cured the problems we were having. I have no idea how many bales have been run through your 575, we bought ours in '97 I think, and we baled around 6000 bales a year through it, mostly second crop alfalfa. Looking at your video, it is hard to discern exactly how worn your knotter parts are compared to my 575, so I am not going to tell you what to do, but you might consider it. In 50 years I have never had so much difficulty with a knotter as you seem to have. I wish you well.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
The more I study it, the more I realize that one small item slightly out of time can cause massive issues. When we sent it to New Holland 2 years ago, they never noticed the issue of the twine box tension being too high. Of course, they don't run material through the balers either. Had they noticed it, thigns would have been VASTLY different the last 2 years. Having to pull so hard that the string wore holes into the ceramic insulators tells me that the knotters took a heavy beating as well. The normal components that wear through such as the gears seem to be in great shape. I'm sure replacing the full knotter system WOULD be a good thing to do . . .

Hay Farm Girl 👧 BIG high five to you. The only thing I can add is your question of torque on that worm gear nut. Note the little square indentations on the outside of those nuts. That tells you that they are locking nuts. They should turn hard putting them on. So they are not subject to a torque wrench. All you do, and can do, is draw them up against the worm gear and then back off just enough for free play. That’s all you can do. Btw you’re awesome 👍

Nice! That’s Bad ass you fixed your knotters be very proud I know a lot of people that have baled hay for years that cant do that! An as for the round baler that’s a inherent problem with those old gehls in short fine hay they work best in fescue or something steamier because of the belt spacing

I kinda figured! I guess if we ever did get a round baler we'd ahve to really look into what works great for fine grass hay . . . Did you end up gettign rid of your maxilator for the Kuhns accumulation system? Or do you use both?
@BagwellFarms
@BagwellFarms 3 жыл бұрын
@@This1LifeWeLive Yes we went to the Kuhns system but I still use the maxilator for a grapple or a backup if needed the maxilator is a good steeping stone to the Kuhns system in my opinion because the Kuhns accumulator is about twice the cost of the maxilator an you still have to buy grapples so if I’d recommend something to anyone starting out with a accumulation system it’d be to start with a maxilator an grow into a Kuhns system

Short hay is an old round baler’s nightmare. Square baling your short hay would be you best bet with the round baler you have. Baling it a little tacky (dew) with a more modern baler if possible. Make short bales with the round baler cause the short hay won’t roll in the chamber as the size increases. A baler with net wrap would help as well as its quick to wrap vs string. (Less revolutions) Hence possibly hiring/rent a newer round baler. Best of luck too you.

yep 5 min with a "old" baler guy....im kinda wondering if your still like working on balers vs cutters as you stated in a earlier video? (even new balers have issues) ..rule o thumb fix rakes and balers first...cutting can always wait a few days hay on the ground cant....tap the stripped threads or double nut it and drill n pin it in place to finish the field then you have all winter to get parts n fix right.....fwiw round balers with big spaced between belts hate short hay......short limp 2nd cutting grass hay will bale some whooper tight packed heavy bales....short very crispy 2nd cut hay is almost impossible to get a heavy bale no matter the tension......sorry your having trouble....good luck hope you got it off the field..

I have probably a dumb question. When was your square baler made? When it was made was it designed to use organic twine rather than nylon/plastic twine? Would the old organic twine even make a difference? Have less wear? More than one question...lol sorry..😀
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
LOL no not a dumb question! I'm not sure when it was made, maybe late 90's? I'd have to search the serial number. It's something I never considered that a baler could have been MADE to use a specific type of string . . . that's a good point! For us we've tried every type and color out there, and the New Holland Blue has worked the best. Our issues aren't with the string (right now) it's within the knotter itself makng sure everything is set properly. Mis-ties would be a sign of incorrect string tension on the billhook. In all honestly if the syetm is set-up correctly for the type of string it's using, it shouldnt have any issue ;) Sometimes the extra skinny string can be hard for it to hold, and sometimes the extra heavy duty sisal can be hard for it for work through as well. But in theory, if the system is set-up correctly everything should flow smoothly ;)
@johns9315
@johns9315 3 жыл бұрын
@@This1LifeWeLive if its made around the 90s then it would be built to use nylon string, I worked for a farmer just after I left school in the mid 80s an he had an old NH bailer that he got from new mid 70s an that took nylon twine fine. No two balers are always the same though they can be same make model an year but one might run better on one make of twine but the other will run better on a different brand of twine lol Not sure if you can get the brand we use over there in the states but we have no trouble with Cotesi medium in our small square balers. The only other problem with the round baler is you can't easily collect them up as you bale if it looks like rain only having one tractor, at least with small sq bales you can throw them on a trailer by hand if rains looming while you continue to bale. Your doing a great job with all the problems your getting, just continue what your doing and you will get it all worked out :)

Interesting . . . I have several GUY farmer neighbors who also are first time farmers and also are having issues . . . and I also have been out to help THEM out. Unless YOU are a FIRST generation farmer starting an entire farm from scratch, you really have no place to judge. That's like a 60 year old guy who's never had kids telling a first time mother how poorly she's raising her 2 yr old . . . I'm not going to sit here and judge their equipment failures, or animal failures. I knw they are doing the best they can. I also know there are farmers in my area who have spent their entire lives farming . . . and are still failing at it . . . I'm not going to judge them either for I am NOT in their shoes. And I will fully admit that I mess everything up. All the time, everytime. There is NOT ONE THING in my life I have succeeded at, so why would farming be any different? I'd probably mess up watching grass grow too. BUT, as a bonus I am NOT driving our farm into debt, we are fully debt free. And I am turning a profit. I might not be able to grow as fast as others (due to my massive tendency to fail all the time) but I am growing the farm, despite every failure.

@@This1LifeWeLive You are NOT failing Suze. You are gaining experience. Farming is very tough and then there is the Weather that beats you sometimes. You do NOT mess everything up. Shit happens. We admire your perseverance and dedication to your family, land and domestic animals. As a youth I spent many Summers Cutting and Raking hay to be baled by my cousin at various farms in the Township. We had lots of problems too. Try hand cranking a 4 cylinder Wisconson engine like forever it seemed. Don't beat yourself up. You have succeeded in many things. You even got the knotter working! The smile you had when the bales came out OK was incredible. We had a couple cranks that loosened or tightened the bale chute to adjust weight. Congratulations on being profitable. You will make it all work. (HUG)

Never drop hay on the ground thats my motto. Hay baskets don't work well with knotter issues and they cost alot of money. Good old flat hay wagons are best. Two people can bale and put up alot of hay quickly. I have six 18 footers and can get a 1000 bales on wheels in about 4 hours. Just getting it up on wheels in a short time when rain is coming can be the best option.

Hay wagons out here are tough to find (hence why we bought the parade float, which still requires major repair work). Nor do we have the space to store hay wagons out of the rain. We can exactly fit 2 bale carts into the barn plus still put the hay elevator inside. The grapple system unloads hay very neatly and very quickly, so if we do eventually manage to switch into trailers we will look into getting a second smaller tractor to use with the grapple system.
@This1LifeWeLive

Everything costs money . . . a good wagon runs about $3000-$5000 out here. In any business you look at the cost of upgrading, the different pros and cons, and how it fits your individual operation. If the same thing worked for everyone, there would only be one type of hay system made.

I just live 60 miles to your east not that far away so we are working in very different conditions $, weather, and product. If I could get $3000 for any of my wagons i would get out of the hay business and go into the wagon business. Baskets cost $3000 and up. Being able to bale alone can cost alot of money and all that equipment better work well. I think for the number of bales you do you would be better off to put the shoot back on that baler and put a person on the wagon. Getting the field on wheels quickly has its advantages. How many bales do you put up?

I have seen it where the pins that go through the bill hook and the twine holder gears have sheared allowing the shaft to turn slightly before jamming also I always carried a small piece of carborundum stone to dress the twine knives rather than a file so that you don't get that jagged finish on your knots.

The trick is to swerve back and forth until the core is about a foot tall then switch sides of the bale watching the belts they climb up hill as the bale grows if they are tracking to the left of the machine then feed hay into the right side of the machine until they start to track to the right then switch back to feeding the left and do it all over again until the bale is the size you want. Wrap it with twine and dump it out and start the process again. Also we go about 7 to 10 miles an hour as our baler likes to be crowded.

I think half of your problem with the round baler, is I think for one. The balts are too smooth don't have alot of grip? And two I don't think that model of a round baler is designed for small levy corps like second cutting, but probably just needs more TLC My guess is why your square bales were coming out heavy with the hydraulic tensioner you have, I'll guess it gotten more active when your RPM were up higher, but one thing I will say what you need to do is, sides that is a newer model then ours we have a 316 NH super sweeper which I'll guess is a mid 80s model so am telling you right now what we learned with ours especially in thin winwows, I'll give you a hint, we normally bale at forth sometimes fiveth gear at 540 544ish of RPM going 4 to 5 mph,;) depending on thick of winwows so you have to force feed it. So if you would speed a gear or two, they might not be as heavy, then that speed you went, sure I don't know that baler, but it tells me your tension is there maybe a bit high or just right, but probably just needs to have more hay in through it faster;) but it all comes down to how you like the wight of the bales, probably have to do lots of figurings and rejectings. Other than that good video.
@This1LifeWeLive
@This1LifeWeLive 3 жыл бұрын
the next video I talk about why they were so heavy, and did just a you suggested (went faster) and they were vastly improved! The hydrolic tensioner wasn't tensioning at all (it wouldn't increase) so I think it needs more hydrolic fluid . .

The first thing to know when you are farming is how potentially dangerous each machine is. We heard multiple stories over the years of people and children dying by farm equipment. One of them was a neighbor during the process of trying to pull out a stuck tractor which I already posted on onelonelyfarmers channel late last winter and it was graphic so I’m not going to re post it here. It was the video in which he told stories of farm deaths. Mine was under “Boyd W” before I changed my channel name to Boyd The Goofball.
