The first time I saw this match, I was sure Waldner had simply dusted Ma Lin. Out of nowhere, Ma Lin staged an amazing and confident comeback. He is simply too good. It seems that with the exception of Athens 2004, Waldner has had some very painful losses against him.

Agreed...but ma lin was lucky in this match...and otherwise both are the best players that game had witnessed.

Thank you poster. A very important match. But horrible to watch the conclusion. I can sort of work out why Waldner lost - he let his amazing control slip in the third set, and his return of serve gradually went downhill as the match progressed. Also Ma managed to get more of his third ball attacks back than...any one else at that time. Still, it chokes me up after watching how well Waldner played in the first two sets. He should have won it.

@@shanetang2273 ma won because of waldner's ton of silly mistakes... Ma didn't deserve that win... Waldner deserved to regain world champion 1999...

@@saikarthikbathula7108 The WTTC is every 2 years which kinda creates a false image of the level of players.Ma Lin wasn't selected for the 2000 Olympics,rightly so cause we all know what happened in 2004.Ma Lin owned Samsonov and Boll,that's for sure.Waldner still remains the best player of all time considering the depth of competition he faced.

Shocked to see Waldner choke in the third. Shows you that never giving up and finding a window of opportunity can change the momentum of a match at such high level. Ma has an amazing dead serve fake but I wished he had a stronger third ball attack like Kim Taek Soo or Ryu Seung Min. It was Waldner’s match for sure.

Everything went in waldner's favour until the 3rd set 16-11... Waldner was 2-0 up in sets and 16-11 up in the third set(which would've been the last)..then comes ton of silliest mistakes by waldner... He deserved to regain the title in 1999 WC

saikarthik bathula, Ma Lin was able to adapt to Waldner's serves, just in time. From then on, Ma Lin got the upper hand because Waldner couldn't adjust to Ma's serves. From this match on, Ma Lin became one of the best players in the world. If not for the unnecessary change of TT rules, Ma Lin would have won at least 3 WTTC Singles and became the GOAT of TT. Ma Lin would have been more dominant than today's Ma Long.

@@benthekeeshond545The hook serve to the forehand was a novelty at the time.Waldner studied it and beat him in 2004 just like he did against Liu Guoliang.

Ma started serving differently in 3rd game, forcing waldner to receive weaker from then on out. Good strategy from the Chinese bench.

So Waldner defeated KONG Linghui and then lost to MA Lin in this championship? I remember in mid 90s Chinese fans thought pen hold has no future. No one expected LIU Guoliang, MA Lin, WANG Hao, XU Xin coming out later on. The pen hold baton passed to European players now

Having two different playing styles makes the game more interesting to watch. Modern games have most of the players playing in the same style which makes the game boring to watch .

Kong Linghui was pretty poor against Europeans,it was a matter of serve-receive game cause the Chinese couldn't keep up in rallies so their shakehanders struggled. The game of penholders shifted more and more towards the shakeland style hence they got a guy like Xu Xin who can't even play close to the table and plays more like Europeans of the 70's and the 80's(Secretin,Appelgren). The original penhold style was fast hitting close to the table with pimples which was gone by the late 80's.

@@dickn.ormous1064 pen holder following shake hand style has no future. They need to attack first. That’s why WANG Hao did better job than Xu Xin. Felix is doing a good job too.
