I bought a generic USB-C dock and later a Jsaux 2.0 dock and neither of them worked with my 4k TV (sync/screen tearing on older Samsung). The SteamDeck Dock worked immediately and with a good refresh rate. The SD Dock also gets fimeware upgrades directly through the Steam Deck. Pretty neat! But yes expensive. The extra charger is worth it though, Jsaux borrows the original charger to operate.

I use my Steam Deck docked to my TV. I like the comfortable chair :). I do have a gaming PC if I really want better graphics, but I play a lot of indie titles and such so the extra power of the PC isn't really something I miss too much. Although recently in Timberborn my colony is getting large enough that the difference between the CPUs is noticeable. The Steam Deck will struggle when I set the speed to maximum, but my PC won't even notice. I definitely love being able to share saves between PC and the Steam Deck. It's one of my favorite features. I do like being able to use 4K in desktop mode, for watching KZfaq and such. @@Spencerwalker21 FreeSync is AMDs marketing term for Variable Refresh Rate. It dynamically adapts the refresh rate of the monitor to the FPS of the game on the fly, reesulting in much smoother motion and fixes screen tearing without the additional inputlag of V-Sync. Let me google that screen for you... "The C1 is a better gaming TV, with four HDMI 2.1 ports, support for variable refresh rate technology (VRR), and a 120Hz refresh rate." VRR is effectively the same as FreeSync, FreeSync is just AMDs marketing term for it and on PC it was available first via DisplayPort. VESA calls it VRR or VRF or VFR for HDMI ports on TVs and i think it is officially supported from HDMI 2.1 forward but best to look it up specifically to make sure. Nvidia calls it G-Sync and has some proprietary modules in certain PC displays (like mine) but by now also allows FreeSync Monitors to work on Nvidia Cards. .... just not the other way around (which means i actually need to get a new Display if i want to use FreeSync ... well, with the next upgrade) The Steam Deck Dock only has HDMI 2.0 ... i don't know if that will work for your screen. But there is always a chance they add it later via Firmware Update, so make sure to keep an eye on those patchnotes. Just FYI: The current gen Xbox and PS5 also support VRR via HDMI, those should work on your LG c1.

The main difference between the steam deck dock and the alternatives like the Jsaux one is, it comes with a charger, it has faster USB ports, higher bandwidth Display port and HDMI ports and is way more convenient to update, for example when you plug the official dock into the deck, the deck will automatically detect it and update the firmware of the dock, the unofficial Jsaux one requires you to download their tool on windows to then update it

Most of the good ones that support 60fps are about the same price or more than the official dock. I figured in order to avoid compatibility issues it’s just easier to go with the official one. I could see cheaper options being good for those who don’t really care or don’t want to spend much.

The only thing that is limiting me on the steam deck is that Im already very invested in the switch, even going as far as getting a couple of games again on it, just so I have everything together. And even though the switch is aging it for sure will be compatible with the next Nintendo handheld, whenever that will be.

Emulation. If there’s games from your childhood or you just want to try something retro that isn’t a priority for game devs to republish, that’s your only option (in most people’s practical terms). Sky’s of Arcadia for instance. I literally can’t buy it on for modern hardware. I own it but don’t want to have to play it on a Dreamcast, and all that entails.

Where do you go to change the settings to display it on the dock and the monitor ??? I accidentally chose to have the screen off on the steam deck and display on , on the tv. But I want both on !

While no controller can turn the steam deck on from your couch. If you set up your steam deck to use Steam Link you can wake your deck up via the Steam Link app on your phone (tested on Android I don't have an apple product to test on) even if the app says your offline. The last pc you connected to has to be the steam deck as you can't choose offline consoles in the app but it works if you just hit 'start playing' for some reason.

I like it. Was expecting more from it… but it’s a PC interacting with a USB-C docking station. What more could it do? However, I’ve never had an issue with a Switch dock packed in my bag, sure the footprint is larger, but it’s still light enough to move around. It behaves with its Dock the same way an iPad (or any USB-C tablet) does while plugged into a dock. It offers a small chip to bump up the resolution and power going to the Tegra SoC. Where the Valve APU from AMD doesn’t change its behaviors at all, whether it’s plugged in or not… which is how a PC behaves. It’s apples to oranges in this case. Would you compare your iPad to your PC? It’s really the brilliant side of Valve’s marketing on the Deck: call it a PC and not a console, then we don’t have to be stuck or chained. Also, anyone who’s worked on ANY computer knows this, change anything on the inside, the manufacturer will defacto blame your change. If my late 2018 Mac mini decides to go awry, I’m gonna have to pull out the 32GB Crucial RAM and put Apple’s back into it for coverage. I’m sure if I change out my 2230 drive in my Deck, then something goes wrong, Valve will tell me I broke it. Whereas my console fails, that’s a manufacturer issue within their warranty. Please note, I mean anything within the manufacturer’s warranty and not beyond. Love the video. Still some of the best produced content comes from you as always

I've had some success getting my docked Steam Deck to wake up from sleep mode by clicking a USB mouse. It's finicky though, and only seems to work if I've entered sleep mode via the software, and not if I've physically pushed the power button. When it works, it does encourage me to play my Steam Deck instead of something else if I'm just bored in front of my TV.

Yeah that resolution issue has happened to me a few times. I just throw my steam deck on my JSAUX dock which doesn't seem to have the issue and then change the setting there. You can only change the settings when you're in docked mode. Mostly keeping it on automatic resolution causes the issue.

I personally like having the usb port in the back of the switch dock. I have a hub plugged in the back that has my ethernet adapter, gamcube adapter, n64 adapter and a charger plugged it. While still having access to theb2 usb ports on the side.

One thing I’ve seen people resolve the monitor issue with is by using the dock but not having power so you should be able to adjust the settings on the Deck. Not entirely sure all the specifics but it’s seen some success in Reddit threads

One thing to keep in mind, some third-party adapter/dongles/docks don’t provide the full power to charge while you play on the big screen, even with the original charger.

I went through a similar thought process you did. I bought one, but I already have a gaming PC and I play that on a nice TV. I think my use case for the dock would be to play emulated retro games. I can play it on a nice TV, but also take it out of the dock and play on the go. There’s no cloud saves for those types of things, so playing it all on a single device would be more convenient. It would also be nice for travel.

I completely agree with your conclusions. The Steam Deck Dock is the perfect extension to the flexibility that the functionality of the Deck provides. However, Valve's openness in allowing the Deck to use any generic USB-C dock, let's people who don't want to shell out the $90 for the Dock+Charger also benefit from the work they've put into the docked experience. I grabbed a JSaux dock like a week before the SDD dropped, but I don't feel like I'm missing out or getting a compromised knock-off experience. It perfectly fits my Deck with the Killswitch case, and playing Death Stranding at an upscaled 4K30 looked incredible, and was a lot easier to set up than getting my PC to run on the TV.

I think the Nintendo Switch dock was purposely design that way so to make the Switch look like a home console. When you inserted the Nintendo Switch tablet onto the Switch dock, it feels like you're inserting a cartridge onto a console like the old days of the NES, Super NES, and N64.

I can see the dock being worth it for somebody who's willing to make the steam deck their main computer, similar to how people use a laptop as their everywhere computing device. I don't fit that category of user, but I can imagine there being someone out doing that since it absolutely can be done.

Steam deck has made travel so much more convenient since I no longer have to hulk a giant glass paneled desktop pc around town with a bunch of strangers shooting me the stink eye. Having a dock (or dongle) for the device is still a great idea no matter what your case is since it makes it convenient to stream your desktop to your living room for example (Provided you don't already have dedicated devices for this) It really highlights the idea that the Steam Deck is a swiss army knife for gamers.

Is my internet speed the reason why I get “A Communication Error Occured” or some of those other messages a person can get while playing Splatoon 3? I already moved my entire dock and switch OLED near the router and what not, no interference and STILL 😤🤨 I get messages. Like in the Lobby for Turf War and Salmon Run, if I move around while waiting for my match to start, more than likely I’ll get an error message and this is a feature Nintendo implemented into Splatoon 3, as you already know. Have any suggestions to ease my frustration? It would be greatly appreciated 😌. Also, I have to mention that, I can play my PS4 and Xbox One S, all day long and no internet interruptions at all!

You can also use USB-C dongles to dock the Switch. They just only work if you use Switch-specific USB-C charger (official or third party) with it. Sold my official switch dock after I found this out. Dongles are so much easier to transport.

I am using a 3rd party dongle I got with my laptop a few years back it has tons of USB, USB c power, HDMI, and an SD card slot its great for when I want to use the deck at the TV, my only gripe is when the deck is charging the dongle may forget there's other things connected to it for a second so it has to get itself together TV flicker then I lose my keyboard and mouse then it's ok.
