@@bland9876 analog pocket uses fpga hardware emulation (so 100% exact emulation) and apparently the screen is beautiful and great at emulating the look of the scree of the GB etc. Wish i had one!! I suggest you check the digital foundry review of the Pocket, its great

@@bland9876 For one because the display on the pocket is far superior than any other handheld device out there. But even beyond that with a flash cart you can still use the functions like link cables or IR in case that's wanted, and flash carts allow the use of rom hacks without having to rely on shitty fakes from ebay. Personally I use my real carts as much as possible, but for stuff like hacks, translations, or extremely rare games I'll use the flash cart.

Got the EZ Flash Definitive Edition last Sunday. My only issue is that it doesn’t play SNES games after the initial setup (you’ll have to install a completely different emulator), but it’s really fun thus far. I got it specifically to enjoy the games I never got to play during my childhood. GB, GBC, GBA, and NDS games are extremely expensive these days, so spending about $80 to get dozens, or even hundreds of games is 100% worth it.

I did this like 15 years ago with my brother's DS Lite because the hinge was completely broken. I remember you needed to solder a resistor to some place so that it thought the upper screen was still connected, and it actually worked!

I did the same thing with my ds lite and I found a way to do it without soldering and still kept one speaker that worked great! Easiest and best mod I’ve done!

if you get the definitive edition (costs like $80) you can connect your gba saves to ds games, like pal park in pokemon, mineral town characters in harvest moon ds, etc

You didn't pick up the Definitive Edition of the Omega based on the smaller PCB in this video. DE has a ROM flashing mode that makes the cart work with GBA-DS link functionality in Pokemon Pal Park.

Love my ez flash, just refurbed my old childhood gba I found in the shed. Put an ips screen in, and paired with the ez flash It’s probably my new favorite gaming handheld in 2023 lol

The EZ flash model comparable to the everdrive is actually closer to the same price. Still a bit cheaper though. They each have their own advantages/disadvantages so they're not completely analogues though they're fine for most games. Everdrive is made by a Ukrainian company Krikzz. They were directly affected by the war! Buying Everdrives is directly helping people hurt by Russians. EZ flash is helping ...a Chinese company.

Some clarification: while this does allow you to technically play original Gameboy games on the DS and GBA, it uses an emulator to run them. While it works well, it may not be 100% accurate to the experience of the original game. You would need a different device designed to play the original Gameboy games.

@@MikeRetroModz oops, that's a good question! When playing GBA games, it's *not* emulation, as it puts game data where the GBA expects it to be, as if playing an original game.

@@MikeRetroModz correct. The GBA can run original GB games natively, no emulation, but requires it to boot into Gameboy mode instead. There's a physical switch inside the cartridge slot that is pressed by GB/C cartridges, but not GBA carts. Unfortunately not really practical to make a cart that does both without emulation, because original Gameboy games ran on 5v power, and GBA uses 3.3v (I forget the exact numbers but the difference is significant enough)

That sucks. Is the DS hardware simply not capable of running Game Boy games? I know the cards are a different shape and prevent Game Boy games from being inserted, but I'm just wondering if the hardware still has the capability. Like how the Wii U still has the hardwware to run Gamecube games, since that was built into the Wii hardware, which the Wii U can also run.

That flash cart will play GB/GBC games but it’ll most likely be emulating them. The vast majority of games will probably play fine but it’s not equivalent to putting in a GB/GBC cart. Notably you’ll probably run into issues trying to play crystal. I know on my EverDrive GBA X5 mini I can’t get crystal working on it so I also have an EverDrive GB X7 for my GB/GBC games

Exactly this, the emulator GB and GBC games run on is called Goomba Color, and it has various compatibility issues specifically with the later GBC titles. But even on older titles like Link's Awakening a few things like the water fall noises sound awful on the emulator. Pikachu's cries in Pokemon Yellow is another great example. But most games play quite well and, if anything, have only minor issues like a few sounds being wrong.

for people wanting to buy an ez flash, if you want to save and quit the game, always save then wait at least 5 seconds before turning it off, turning it off immediately can corrupt the save data as it takes a little while to save so what i do is save using the in game funcion and count to 5, then save state and also count to 5, only then i turn the console off

The Nintendo DS CAN get attached GameBoy Color games natively, the one that can’t is the DS Lite, but the original has no issue with the other than sticks out like on a GameBoy Advance/SP, and in the original DS GameBoy Advance games also don’t stick out

That's not true, the fat DS is also only backwards compatible to GBA games, GB and GBC games will not work on it when you try to plug them in.

Yes you may be right, I had some mixed memories right there as I played a lot of Pokémon Yellow, while I had the DS but also had the Advance and SP so I mixed their use to play that game and I kinda mixed all up

It's wild you can put the entire NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBC, GBA library on a tiny SD card. That's what I did for my Raspberry Pi and Retroid Pocket.

I can’t speak for the EZFlash but I have an EverdriveGBA and the power consumption is surprisingly low, similar to an actual GBA game. The build quality is great too, would recommend!

The power drain is the biggest advantage. I think there is one model of EZ flash that doesn't something Everdrive doesn't though... maybe it's the real time clock? I can't remember.

I have one of these. The thing to note is the device uses an emulator for the GB and GBC games, and a few games aren't compatible with that emulator. Pokemon Crystal is one specifically I tried that didn't work.

Another thing to note is that games with save features won’t keep their saves if you just turn off the GBA. You have to exit the emulator then turn off the console.

Also FYI there is the ez flash omega definitive edition which doesn't have a ds lite shell and is $80, but fixes the saving issues of the base edition, the rtc is better, and pokémon can be transferred to the ds pokémon games with it

I have an EZ Flash Omega and I love it! It even has rumble so you can use it for the few games that support it like Drilldozer. My old SP is my favorite system now

It also emulates NES natively and there is firmware available to allow it to play other systems such as TurboGrafx 16. Also, I recommend getting the definitive edition if you have a DS since it has the bonus of acting as either a DS Rumble pack or the DS Ram expansion cartridge. The rumble feature also works when playing Game Boy games that have Rumble. The only drawback to the definitive edition is that it doesn't come with the smaller case.

I still own one of the older cards, the EZ Flash III. It came with either 512MB or 1GB (The cart I had, which was orange as well) of flash memory on-board and couldn't be replaced. You needed a special device to change your ROM list on the cartridge which requires drivers that won't run on anything above XP. I'm still using it and still have an old laptop with XP on it to add/change my ROMs on it.

I tried using the ez flash GBC cart and had issues with it using too Much power and freezing on me . I paid the premium and got the everdrive and had 0 issues with it . Glad your EZ flash is working . For me my experience was “you get what you pay” I paid for the cheaper version and saw the negatives

I have the EZFLASH OMEGA: Definitive Edition, and it’s fantastic. Just be mindful that it drains battery at twice the rate, so you’ll need a better GBA battery if using original hardware.

Yes, but some reason, EZ-Flash uses an emulator called Goomba Color for GB and GBC games, instead of using GBA's native GB/GBC support. So, some GB/GBC games have save problems, glitches, you can't stretch them to full screen, etc.

I think it's for GB Micro/DS/DS Lite compatibility. But if I was part of the company who made EZ-Flash, I would make a different version for GBA/GBA SP including native GB/GBC support from console's hardware.

My EZ Flash Omega Definitive Edition works pretty well. I have the entire collection of GBA, GBC, and GB ROMs on it along with movies. My EZ-Flash Junior however has been a nightmare. And it's full of known issues with too many files on the SD card. It holds like nine games before the menu breaks.
