NBC's Supertrain is here come aboard for a ride. What a great idea to make a show like "The love boat" but on a super luxury gigantic high-speed train crossing the continent at 200 mph! The star of the show would be of course THE SUPERTRAIN, the regular cast and popular guest stars.
Incredible huge sets were built that had cost about 6 million dollars (in 1979 that was a lot of money...) Everything was done to make it look real and Big. Great disco themes and music composed by Bob Cobert. But the show was a failure.
Too much on the container and about no content. Silly stories with too much improbabilities. The look of the show changed at each episodes with 3 different opening themes in just 10 episodes! Was it Drama? Was it suspense? Was it a disaster movie? Was it a comedy show? Was it a slapstick comedy with recorded cheers? All this happen when a show is rushed into production without clear guidelines on the format and the background of the main theme.
Good stories, good writing and good technical consultants would have saved this SUPERTRAIN from crashing. How can you possibly believe that the government and the American people would allow an atomic-powered train to cross the America at 200mph without any single safety system on board? Would you like to have a Tchernobyl on rail? That's insane!
Anyway, i did this video to celebrate THE SUPERTRAIN. Because i love trains and this one is sure one of a kind.
I used many of the themes including the recycled theme from "CHAIN REACTION". In the first part you'll see supertrain's departure from NY followed by different shots of the models. (note: on one of the night shots, you'll see only 5 cars. This was probably filmed after the crash that destroyed half the train, but that's another story... ) Then you'll see the end of the inaugural trip from the pilot "Express to terror" OK I re-edited it but it's close to the original (meaning the original is as silly...) I would have loved a shot of the swimming pool during the emergency stop!!!!
please: ASK NBC TO RELEASE SUPERTRAIN ON DVD NOW!
Thanks for watching!

The part where the old man billionaire red lines the train to no doubt kill the two people on top of the train was priceless. Not to mention the sets were so small you were looking up everyone noses when they shot every scene. Oh and the fact it had a disco that seemed as large as the whole train was priceless. It's amusing 70's retro futurism at it's finest.

As ridiculous as the TV show was, and it was absurd, the general concept behind a super-broad gauge passenger train is intriguing. It would be very stable, plus add a lot of room inside the cars for amenities, like the disco floor and swimming pool. LOL

Scale models of Supertrain were built by Railroad Supply Corporation from Burbank, CA, that still builds live steam scale models for backyard outdoor miniature railroaders and also Hollywood movies for train wrecks in 1/8th scale for 7&1/2"inch guage track, but S.T. has 20' foot gauge in scale of 30" inches for the large outdoor set pieces to use natural light from the sun, and trick perspective when running near the mountain ranges, and this is the model that ran off the end of the loading elevated track, and wrecked the actual dummy engine unit and the 1st car with transition wedge to front plus 3 more coaches, but the small indoor studio model is 1/16th scale at 3/4" inches, but spfx could not find enough live steamers, so used slightly larger 1" scale trains from Los Angeles Live Steamers Club in Griffith Park, so S.T. 1/16 mini departs N.Y. G C T overhead viaduct and passes 1" sc., 4&3/4" gauge 4-6-2 plus wooden caboose actually cast aluminum, by Little Engines Co. In Lomita, CA.

3:12 Just this shot alone looks like a realistic train. How can this be just a model? Damn special effects even back then were awe inspiring and amazing. The said this $250,000 dollar model almost bankrupted NBC considering how much they spend on TV shows today - this show is super El-cheap-O - makes today's shows look extremely tame by comparison. They spend super duper multi-millions now. And that's just only with CGI.

They're using a technique called forced perspective for that shot. The model train is close to the camera, and the platform is behind and below the model, quite far in the distance.

Yes it's an hilarious movie. They used a real custom built Prevost bus for all the exterior shots. Strange how the production designers of Supertrain seems to have missed it. I think it was cool that Dan Curtis and Bob Cobert were working together again - in the 60’s Cobert did the music for Dark Shadows. Cobert was already an established composer by then, and his creepy cues were a 180° from his jaunty game show themes. Here he conquers disco and of course two of those cues were repurposed into game show themes - Chain Reaction (heard here) and Your Number’s Up.

Especially during the 1980's, the sets were in TV shows like "Moonlighting" on ABC with Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis during the Murder Mystery Excursion with Miss Dapesto the secretary. And you can tell by the extra wide dining room, plus sleeping car side aisle when 2 people can walk side by side.. Also used in Hardcastle and McCormack starring Brian Keith as the Judge. Then Sheriff Lobo starting Claude Akins as Sheriff during beauty pageant carrying girls on train to the competition. Plus several more. Nazis had a similar project, due to Hitler's megalomania. Not atomic propelled, only steam, luxurious as an ocean liner, and transporting only members of the master's race; but also unrealizable, because too heavy, the ground would not have beared such a weight and the ground under the giant railway would have collapsed ...

Is it me or do we see steam coming out of the sides of the engine cab ?
@Wurlyscope
@Wurlyscope 4 жыл бұрын
Yep it's a steam locomotive with a nuclear reactor providing heat. Since we see steam that mean it's not a closed circuit so in an event of a nuclear leak, this steam would probably contaminate all the passengers and the tracks as well. Not a great design but fun to watch.

It's sad in a sense that this series was a failure, and one that almost finished off an already limping NBC with its cost. Maybe the concept did not stick with viewers. Maybe most people do not find trains as glamorous as this one is meant to be. Maybe some of this train's quirks were also unconvincing: nuclear power was starting to raise more than a doubt with the risks it implies (and then Three Mile Island happened...), and if this so-called "Super" train goes coast-to-coast in 36 hours, it would average a top speed of 80 mph/129 kph, less than any high-speed train worth of this name (though, to be fair: this train is very big, a "land cruise ship" of sort, and correspondingly heavy, and with many power-hungry amenities, so, like a "real" cruise ship would do, most of its engine power is probably meant to satisfy or overcome all these features, rather than for pure speed). But this series has its merits still. First, the overall design of the train is fantastic, with its '70s Zeerust, wedge shape, interior design, and spaceship-like driving cab. Like something out of Star Wars. Also, the model effects, for all the NBC money they've burned (literally, one model train caught fire), were really nice for the time! The forced perspective at 3:10 is very realistic looking, and so are most of the other sequences in this video. Best of all, the soundtrack! How can you not DIG this "seventy-licious" disco soundtrack!! The last track especially, from 5:15, is absolutely FIRE! *_REDLINE THIS THING!!_*

Great modelwork - other than that, it was The Love Boat on rails with no laugh track, and no recognisable special guests. And think about this - in the event of a reactor containment failure, where does all that radioactive junk go first? All over the train, of course.

3:10 I love this moment, it is an classic effect that anyone can easily do, but the only reason I'm laughing is... well... can anyone find what is wrong at this moment? Other than that, the show that features a nuclear Drunkly-Built-Channel-Tunnel-Train-with-a-swimming-pool (and-is-totally-not-a-model) is for me the biggest example of a total waste of money.

Actually, if you look close at 3:20, there seem to be a person on the right-hand side of the controls, only it is small and as dark-blue as the train's interior, so it's not very visible.
