I honestly am not a fan of news stations branding their news shows with their call signs, or at least just using their call signs. For example, in Knoxville, the CBS affiliate is WVLT-TV Channel 8. But, since 2018, their news programs are branded as WVLT News. Sure the ABC affiliate in Knoxville (WATE-TV Channel 6) is branded as WATE 6 On Your Side and the Knoxville NBC Affiliate (WBIR-TV Channel 10) is branded as WBIR 10 News, at least they have something that is somewhat creative. In fact, there may or may not be a connection between the news branding and ratings, but WBIR is ranked No. 1 in Knoxville and WATE is ranked No. 2 in Knoxville. No. 3 in Knoxville belongs to WVLT, who as mention is branded as WVLT News. WVLT could have been more creative like sticking with its Local 8 News branding it from 2011 to 2018. Why not brand it as WVLT NewsChannel 8 or News 8 Knoxville or CBS 8 Knoxville or even CBS Knoxville News? Just something creative than just WVLT News.
