Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
France was in an interesting position during World War One of being a primary supplier of rifles and machine guns to its allies, but a major importer of handguns. In addition to a great many Spanish pistols of several types, the French government purchased both revolvers and Government Model 1911 pistols from Colt. Specifically, they purchased 5,000 standard commercial 1911s off the shelf from Colt, with deliveries starting in April of 1915 and ending in January 1916. These appear to have been issued to tank crewmen, but not exclusively. It is unclear how exactly they were distributed, but after the war they were sold as surplus through Belgian dealers.
These French purchase 1911s were not given any markings by the French, and appear as standard commercial 1911s. They can only be identified by serial number and by Colt factory letter. We know the whole of the order was fulfilled with pistols between number C17800 and C28000, but only about half of the guns in that range went to France. Colt did not ship the guns as a continuous serial number range, but rather took them basically at random from warehouse stocks. To date, no complete listing of their individual serial numbers has been made.
Thanks to Ozark Machine Gun for loaning me this pistol - check out his cool machine gun rental range in Missouri!

This is fascinating! I inherited a 1911 from my dad, who had inherited it from a much older uncle. Family lore has always been that it “was used in the war,” and it has an old military leather holster. But it’s a commercial model, not a government issued. It’s a C serial number, now I can go run and see if it’s in this range, and now I also know to write to Colt and ask about it. Thanks Ian!

Still amazes me to think that the 1911 was designed over 100 years ago. If I didnt know anything about guns and someone pulled one out and asked me to guess on its age. I probably would have guessed no older than 50 years. Truly a timeless firearm and a must have in my opinion.

@@labinot1363 except they have been significantly refined over the years... The 1911 has never been perfect. Damned good, but not perfect. Like most Browning designs, they're overly complicated, kinda finicky (until the engineers iron out the kinks...), and difficult to manufacture unless you have exceedingly good repeatability in your machine processes, as they have a really nasty response to tolerance stacking. That said, they have one of the nicest-feeling trigger designs I've ever had the pleasure of shooting, and I would love to build and fit one for myself... Because they are exceedingly cool.

As a patrol sergeant of the Prefecture de Police (Brigadier de Police Secours) in the mid 80’s, badge number 669, my service handgun was a Singer made WW2 1911, affectionally nicknamed “the unsewing machine” : la machine à découdre (native French speakers will certainly get the pun).

Wow, that letter is super cool. Not in the slightest because it happens to be dated for my birthday, but just that you can actually get some correspondence about the official history of the firearm. Even if it's just a sample letter that fills in the blanks with information from a database, there's something surreal about seeing "Government of France" as the recipient, knowing they are not joking. "We trust that you will find the historical information [...] to be of interest." That's cool in a way I can't really describe. It would be a document I would preserve in a very showy way. My first .45 was a Colt 1911, not A1, purchased in 1989 from Lever Arms and Antiques, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Lever had bought something like 100 pounds of .45s from the East German government, which had been captured in WW2, and brought them back to Canada. When I went in to buy one, he took several and took their grips off, so he could show me how to tell who had made which. One was Colt made, prior to 1926, and had been scrubbed clean of all marking except for the new serial number Lever put on to import them. I would have loved to know the history of that one, but with no markings...

I had a 1911 (missing front sight) from that serial # range. It had come to the US via S. America as a Navy Arms import. What I found most interesting about it beyond the serial # was that the frame had been modified in the grip safety area by two holes, one on each side of the grip safety and it had a mainspring housing tapped for a 1/4" bolt. My speculation is that at some time in it's history it had been fitted with a shoulder stock secured by a thumbscrew into the mainspring housing. Sadly I had to sell it years ago and with hindsight I should have gotten a Colt factory letter first.

Bought one around 2015, even as a "cheaper copy" RIA for 550 or so, it was good, reliable gun after some really small and easy tweaking and more accurate than I was. Well, times got tough, needed to sell something and that was the easiest one to replace in the future so... When I get some money I want to get a new 1911, maybe even another RIA. I just like how great a 1911 is to shoot, has some cool history and just a cool gun. I would never carry one, but just for having fun at the range, perfect gun.

French has often produced other countries guns for their own armies... last example : the MAC 50 (for 1950 not the caliber) 9mm was a Beretta the french had stolen to Italians then the MAS G1 9mm (gun mostly used by the french Gendarmerie) during many years (before they chose the Sig Sauer lately) was based on the Beretta F92 9mm, but this time, France and Beretta found an agreement, and was then produced it legally. MAC means Manufacture d'Armes de Chatellerault, and MAS : Manufactire d'Armes de Saint-Etienne (literally : "Guns factory of" and Chatellerault and Saint-Etienne are french cities name)...

Good times. Ironic that we sold them pistols, and they later sold us (or gave us) Chauchats. Thry definitely got the better side of that bargain. If those are the original grips, they are amazingly pristine. I have only had an original 1911 in my hands once. An old lady brought it into our PD to get rid of it after her husband died. I wasn't allowed to buy it (i suggested to her that she could get some bucks from a collector). She wanted it gone though, so into the property room it went. They were going to see if it was possible to donate it to a historical group or museum, but i don't know what happened to it.

I have a Series 70 1911 that I'll definitely be using the archive services to get some more history on it. All I know is it was manufactured in 1973. Nothing significant or special about it, I just think it'd be cool to see some of the histories of my pistol before I got my hands on it.

Ian: you should seek how many 1911's was bought or got spoils of war by fdf or "suojeluskunta" since winter war. When war broke out, I think every one here tried to get some small arms as there was short suply. So called "Cajander"- model was our hope. That meaning any arms one had was good enough. Even .25 brownings used as sidearms(!)

No, we say "11,43 - calibre de la pègre" (weaponery of the underworld). Because there were so many parachuted to the Résistance in WW2 which found their way into the mob's hands after the war it became the weapon of choice for assassinations and gangs gunfights.

Did they make any big modifications to it later? Like a dedicated pistol for tank crew would probably have to be small and fit snugly into a holster, don't wanna lose it to the turret monster.

It would be super cool to hear the opinions of the French soldiers who carried these. I wonder how they felt about the pistols vs the other guns in service. I also wonder where the French bought their ammo for these. Some American company probably got a nice contract. I would guess UMC.
