Apocalypse: World War I is a 5 part documentary on WWI using film taken during the war that is as incredible as it is horrifying. It's not for the faint of heart but you learn a lot and see the absolute carnage that happened during the war. It's even on youtube to watch.

Well, for what its worth, even if the US's educational system is far below expectations, I can say that we learned quite a bit about WW1. Still learned more about WW2 though that's expected.

6:16 Prussia (precursors to Germany) defeated France in 1871 in the Franco - Prussian War and set up the the German Empire. As a newly formed state they were eager to establish themselves as a great world power, that's what the video means by "Germany wanted to take more of everyone's stuff." Germany was very aggressive in its foreign policy so they were eager to go to war when it's ally Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. France were humiliated by the Franco - Prussian War and lost the territory of Alsace-Lorraine. That's why they wanted it back. It's also why there was lots of fortresses along the border, forcing Germany to go through Belgium. As for the prelude to WWI, in Eastern Europe, you had the Crimean War of the 1860s and the Balkan Wars of 1912 & 1913. In simple terms, you had three competing empires trying to assert their power in the Balkans - the Russian Empire, Austro-Hungary & the Ottoman Empire (modern day Turkey). There was many different ethnic groups in that region as well who wanted their own independent states. Some were successful in becoming independent with help from Russia. Russia as a Slavic country saw itself as the defender of the Slavic people's in Eastern Europe and also had an incentive to prevent either Austria-Hungary or the Ottomans dominate the region. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the spark that lit the matchbox but you're right, there was other events that led up to the Great War.

I don't remember where I've heard this but apparently, it wasn't German propaganda but it was part of the UK's (or France's). Germany wouldn't gain much from showing how to the World how they pushing around weaker opponents, but Allies might gain some support by that.

The Polish did use horse cavalry in WW2, but it was modern cavalry. Think mounted mobile infantry with anti tank guns and machine guns. They didn't charge tanks with lances and swords but ride to the battle, dismount and fight on foot.

Fighting in the Second World War was often truly horrific depending on where you were...the Eastern Front and Burma were particularly nasty...but for the Allies at least there was a sense that things were moving in the right direction from the end of 1942 on. The Western Front in the First World War was soul-destroying for those who survived it, a seemingly interminable stalemate in ghastly conditions, with futile efforts to break it resulting in hundreds of thousands of casualties at a time. Previous to the war, there was a general consensus that scientific progress was always a good thing, and that those in authority knew what they were doing; in the West at least those assumptions would never again be so widely held.

WW1 collapsed the empires, and pushed ideologies forward. Most of the 1920's of in central and eastern europe is collectively repressed. Germany basically had riots leading to a small civil war situation. Hungary had a revolution and a real war. Turkey had a war with Greece. Portgual had a revolution. France had massive riots led by communists. Things were pretty chaotic, and when 1929 came along many governments turned pretty authoritarian as the whole democracy thing was not helping against the chaos. The completeness of the fighting in Europe of WW2 is what finally ended the chaos. The American/British on one side and the Soviets on the other made everyone post 1945 fall in line and stop the bickering, basically leading to the modern more unified situation.

Yeah the Franco-Prussian war happened not that long before WWI. The Germans clobbered the French and imposed a really harsh peace treaty on them including giant payments to Germany, which made France angry and it is one of the reasons that the Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1 was so harsh on Germany.

The polish Calvary against German tanks in WW2 is a myth. They basically combined a few stories into one and idk what propaganda reason for it all was but it wasn't true. The German army being this big mechanized army is also a joke. They were using horses to do almost everything you can think of for most of the military throughout the war.

8:21 thanks for repeating Nazi propaganda WTF! The Poles had horses like everyone else at the time (WWII) but they didn't fucking yolo charged them in too tanks for fuck's sake! Fact is in this battle the Polish Cavalry armed with AT rifles MG's & rifles, caught a German battalion of only infantry & thus hosed the down, then the Germans counterattacked with Tanks. That's it. But its true what Josef Goebbles said: "Just repeat & repeat a lie over & over again till everyone believes it.
