Here's a clip that shows three German Albatros biplane fighters (a D.II and two D.Va's) 'over the front'...
This is the only footage you'll find of the three reproduction Albatros aircraft built and operated by The Vintage Aviator Ltd in the air like this -- the video gives a very good sense of what it might have looked like over the Western Front back in 1917.

As a modeler and Great War aviation enthusiast, I will always burn a candle in my heart for WNW and TVAL. Loved this video- especially the shift from sepia tone to full color. Very striking!

You really cant help but appreciate the clarity of the footage, the 1910s footage never felt real due to the frame rate and speed.

Cool video, felt close to getting chills just watching it. To think how advanced those airplanes looked compared to the first heavier than air airplane (Wright Bros.) that flew just 16-17 years earlier.

Mr. Jackson has the resources to produce a WW1 epic that would be the standard to meet for a century to come. Hell, it could be a trilogy, starting it's characters out in May 1914. He could show how the politicians stumbled over the edge, the newspapers keeping the attitudes of the people in the street fed with nationalistic jingoism, the business as usual attitude of the elites. The dawning awareness of some of the socialist leadership, and their efforts to arrest the slide. There could be a scene where Kaiser Willy finds the limits of his powers as he tries to get his Russian cousin to come to an agreement on both of them standing against mobilization.

If this clip was to interpret what it was like flying 100 plus years ago, I don't get it. It's a good video, it striking, and they look like some well looked after airplanes, other than that, it does not deliver it by the title. Somebody missed something in the titling of this clip. More like three: Albatross III flying...........
@historicalmachines
@historicalmachines 5 ай бұрын
It depends on how you read and interpret the title. I disagree with your comments. We never said anything about dogfighting etc etc -- this is what the aircraft in WW1 would have looked like on patrol...

Imagine being in such a formation in 1917. You'd feel pretty invulnerable wouldn't you..?
@konsta524
@konsta524 3 жыл бұрын
And if one of those planes was red you would know you are invulnerable.
@theblytonian3906
@theblytonian3906 2 жыл бұрын
Anything but. Any time in the line would leave you aware of just how vulnerable you were to enemy action. And although that's not super tight, they wouldn't be 'scouting' in such close formation as that in the operational area whether just a couple of machines or the full ' Circus'. They'd be in a looser formation -greater separation, so they could use their eyes to scan the sky and ground around them as it takes too much attention detracting from situational awareness to maintain station in close formation.
