Yep that is correct. They would pretty much layer whatever uniforms they were issued if they didn’t have cold weather gear.

Most original pictures I’ve seen show soldiers wearing the complete m43 uniform (jacket and trousers). I would certainly say that some probably did mix it with the HBT trousers at some point, especially since the HBT uniforms were intended to be layered depending on the weather and combat conditions. I can try to find some period photos showing this later today if you would like.

I wasn’t able to find any with that exact combination. I did come across an interesting photo that shows both uniforms side by side in good detail. If you are looking to do an impression I would probably sick with a complete HBT or m43 uniform (depending on the time of the war, theatre, etc.) you are looking to portray. I’ll keep my eye out for any pictures that show soldiers wearing pieces from both uniforms. If you want to send an email to the address in my “about me” page I’ll send you that picture I found.

What theater was it use most?

@@anderslind8422 These would have mostly been used in the European theatre as marines had their own version.

I am unfamiliar with a P-43. Are you perhaps referring to the P41 or P44? Really the only similarity between USMC and Army HBTs is the fact that they are both made out of HBT fabric. The cut of the jacket, pockets, etc. are all different.

There are a few pictures of marines wearing Army HBTs but it seems to have been outside of the norm. The marines had their own HBT, the P41.

There are significant differences in cut, fabric weave, and overall style between Army and USMC trousers. Are you wanting a pair for re-enacting? If so, I guess it depends on how accurate you want to be. I doubt the general public will notice a difference between the two. There are examples of Marines wearing unaltered Army HBT uniform parts but I don’t know how widespread this was. Also, wouldn’t need to get any stamps for the pants. USMC pants didn’t get the EGA and USMC logo like the jackets did.

@@MilitariaReviewed I’m just building one with my friends. I already own the m1923 cartridge belt and harness along with the leggings and helmet and cover. I just need the shirt. And im thinking this shirt with the logo on the left pocket would do good once I’m wearing my harness, haversack, and other gear

Oh I thought you were talking about the pants. If it’s just for a fun project then you’ll be fine with an Army HBT. The most noticeable difference between Army and Marine jackets are the pockets but you could always alter the Army jacket if you wanted.
