Yes they did drop in 82nds drop zone by accident! Drops went badly. My grandpa was in the 82nd as a medic with captains rank. Was in dday, Market Garden, and Battle of The Bulge where he was wounded! He wasn't to talkative about his rough experiences, but he did carry a 30. Cal. Carbine.

​@@ronlackey2689Incorrect, a squad is 10 soldiers and is lead by a Staff Sergeant or a Sergeant, a platoon is commanded by a Lieutenant, a Captain would be a Company Commanding Officer so what that guy said still makes no sense... I dont see why they'd send senior medical personel into combat

101st didnt put their combat bandage on their helmet in normandy until market garden . also the accuracy of german side is horrendously wrong in many ways uniform and equipment. But its a good film that they made

Not to mention the bloke carrying the Thompson initially. If you fired a Thompson with it up that high, a busted nose, cheekbone etc would be a likely result. (along with a possible jam)

A lot of paratroopers lost there weapon on the drop on d day so it is possible they got one off a German. But yeah would of been short term.

The US lost a lot of men because they didn't adopt the British release mechanism. They dropded into water and couldn't get out of their harness.

Yes, but not intentionally. The transport pilots were unprepared for the amount of AA fire. They dropped them, sometimes too fast and other times too low. Sometimes both. At Market Garden, they did much better.

Yeah that is a nee technique primarily used by SWAT teams and police units. I am with you. It think it is a pretty stupid way to carry because it blocks a lot of your view. May be ok in close quarters but certainly not in the open field. One of the Americans was also carrying an M3A1. A “Grease Gun” with the “finger hole” bolt and extended dust cover. These were not yet developed and fielded in time for D Day.

I grew up on a country estate using shotguns, both on rough and driven shooting, so I was used to holding the weapon low, swinging it swiftly into the shoulder, and firing from a well-balanced stance. ...... To hold any weapon to the shoulder for any length of time, particularly while moving, causes strain, and the butt will tend to drop, meaning that any shot made will tend to be awkward. Our platoon commander was an urban penpusher by trade, and useless at commanding infantry. ...... First seen at 1:36 - it was a very good weapon and commonly picked up by allied troops to use, although I doubt this would have been the case on the pre-D day airborne drops detailed in this film.

One of the American is carrying the “Grease Gun”. Judging by the size of the ejection port and cover this is the M3A1 version. As far as historical accuracy, I do not believe the A1 version of the M3 was available during the timeframe being portrayed here. The M3A1 did not have a separate charging handle. It had an extended ejection port and a finger slot in the bolt for the soldier to be able to insert a finger and pull the bolt to the firing position.

My mothers father was an waffen ss kia in battle of Kursk. He was a major. Her uncle was an fw190 pilot mia in Italy! Now my pa's pa was in the 82nd airborne with capt.s rank and a medic. He carried a 30.cal. carbine. He was in dday, Market garden , wounded in The Battle of The Bulge! He didn't say too much of his horrible experiences until he was ready to; that would be awhile; a great while; about a year!

The english kind of copied the MP40 with the Sten gun, the English liked how the stamped steel construction of the mp40 brought down production costs. The only issue was that, with the Mp40, the magazine hindered use while in the prone position, so the English moved the magazine on the Sten gun to the side rather than the bottom

@@listerdtype1901 The Sten was a cobbled up SMG because the Brits had nothing like the fantastic MP 40 and although it looked like a piece of crap there were a terrible number of German lads who died laughing at it.

Sounds like you miss Bragg. As a veteran of the 101st (1982 - 1985), how can anyone who humped a ruck and weapon for this country be overrated? Bridge Too Far, Pvt Ryan and Longest Day features the All American diviison.

Tommy gun used here was a pre war commercial model. By 1944 they were using cheaper & simpler military model. Easy to tell because the bolt was on the side on the military model, not the top.
