Colin is such an interesting character. When we meet him he is sweet, young and naive. It's clear he is inexperienced and romantic. He's kind and caring towards Pen and appreciates her personality and her company. We can see that even though she's a little too young still (I think she is 16 in the first season, and he is 20), he seeks her out and wants to actually spend time with her. After meeting Marina he becomes excited that a beautiful young woman with many suitors is paying attention to him and taking him seriously when not even his family does so. After the truth about her gets revealed (in such an awful way) and he goes to talk to her, he finally sees the real Marina (cold and not at all in love with him) and something inside him breaks. His happy and sheltered Bridgerton bubble breaks (especially after Anthony's crass speech about him getting his dick wet). When we see him again he is lost (drinking a lot, using substances). The only good thing going on for him it's the letters he and Pen exchange. She is the only person (apart from Phillip) who shows any interest in his stories. It's clear he cares for her, but is confused. Gen says in this season that before we love someone we have to love and accept ourselves and I don't think he's done that yet. He thinks he has to fit a mold his brother fit, because otherwise no one will take him seriously. The mean thing we see him say about Pen at the end of the episode is probably him being defensive at being questioned about it. He wants to show he is a serious man and not a boy anymore. In s3 we see the culmination of years of feeling worthless and comparing worth to servitude. Colin thinks people will only accept him and love him if he has something to offer them, and not for who he really is, because let's face it, not many people appreciate his brand of nerdiness. I like how he immediately tries to fix his mistakes with Pen when he arrives. You can tell he truly misses her. At this point, we have to understand Colin didn't know Pen had feelings for him, or had any reason to believe she did. Not even her closest friend realized that. She's only been one type of Pen around him, and certainly not the assertive, confident, one we'll come to see. Once she asks him for a kiss, is like a whole new world opens up to him. So many possibilities. And we all know that when Colin likes a girl the BOY IS FAST. He wants to secure his woman before someone else does. The things about LW is that, Colin has NEVER known Pen to lie. She is a COMPULSIVE LIAR honestly, but it's a side of her he's never been shown. She didn't entrap him, but she certainly knew she was hiding something, and did not tell him (or even attempted to) before she allowed him to take liberties. Had not been for Eloise putting her foot down, I don't think she would so soon. So, he's been lied to before (someone literally tried to entrap him before), if she can lie about so much, what else isn't she lying about? Does she even love him for real? Colin is a man who struggles to have any self worth, so of course he's going to have a hard time believing Pen truly cares for him when she's been lying to his face for so long. He gets a week to be angry and gets over it, while Eloise spent MONTHS angry at Pen, and people still think he has no right to that. If anything, he got over it so fast. Man is down bad. When he said mean things to Pen at the end of s2 people were so upset with him, but she lies and lies and lies TO HIS FACE and he's not allowed to be upset? Stupid take. He's so nuanced, so interesting and deep (also feral and unhinged) I really love his character. It's a shame people don't take a closer look to appreciate it too, because this is some good writing and character building right there. Sorry about the long rant, I just have many feels about this topic.

Yes it’s this exactly! When people remember the context that Colin’s insecurity is that he is not worthy of Pen’s love it makes complete sense! He is asking what his worth is to her if he can’t protect her and her response is I love you to say that’s all I need/care about. So to hear that the person he loves more than anything also loves him for being him…it makes total sense that he has that reaction.

I agree. I particularly like this season because we know Pen and Colin so well already. They are both rich and interesting character with realistic flaws. Pen's fear of telling Colin about LW is understandable, and his anger is justified. And even though he is upset (she lied about so much, and he's been cruelly deceived before) and he is hurt, he still loves her and wants to be with her. My man took a week to get over it, while many other male leads would milk that shit for ages (Anthony got so petty because Kate didn't think he was good enough for her sister that he PROPOSED TO THE GIRL even though he KNEW he wanted Kate... ffs). He was understandably upset, but his love and admiration for her outshines that in the end, and that's how they were able to get over their issues and be happy together. This is some great story telling. It's just what I want to see.

My favorite couple is Penelope & Colin too. They're best friends, they already like and respect each other before their love story begins. There's joy and consent from the start. In seasons 1 and 2, a lot of the interactions between Daphne & Simon and Kate & Anthony are about animosity, mixed with lust, and not much respect for the other person. Simon would rather die than marry Daphne. He lies to her, and when she finds out, she forces him. The whole mess between Kate and Anthony and Edwina. Anthony's line to Kate, "You are the bane of my existence, and the object of all my desires" is iconic, for sure. But what he's actually saying is, "I really want you, but I don't like you, I see you as a problem, and I'd rather marry your sister than face my feelings." I'm not saying that Daphne & Simon and Kate & Anthony don't love each other, or that Penelope & Colin don't go through problems. But to me, Penelope & Colin have a more solid foundation from the start than the others.

I definitely enjoyed this season myself far more than the other one lol but I think ALOT of concerns comes from some scenes feeling forced like the one I pointed out. I still think it was a solid and cute season 🥹 and awww thank you so much 🫶🏾

I agree! I loved this season. I don’t understand all the negativity around season 3, they can’t all be completely conformed to the books.

I get that, but I think (this is the way I saw it) that he was just desperate for validation. We have to take into consideration that Colin didn't know Pen loved him for years. Then she tells him, only after he's confessed himself multiple times, and right after that he finds out she's lying and hiding secrets. So obviously he's going to question everything she's ever said to him. That fight is the culmination of a lot of things left unsaid between them. They had yet to have a proper conversation about LW. He wants, more than anything, to be NEEDED by her because that's what he thinks love is. He thinks he'll only be loved if he is useful. May be a side effect from having too many siblings. His "what good am I to you" line says a lot. Pen can take care of herself, so why would she need him, and if she doesn't have need for him, why would she love him? She makes it clear that she needs him BECAUSE she loves him and not otherwise. His demisexual ass just gets ultimately horny on LOVE. He's angry, slightly drunk, and frustrated, but he is also desperate for her (we've seen that since he started to spiral in ep3). He wants her to love him more than anything, and for a moment there, he can forget their problem and bask on that.

listennnn I definitely can see the “forced” part because that night alley scene….wasn’t it. I feel like it was trying to give Charlotte and George moment but it fell flat HARD!

I loved parts of it a lot but sometimes I thought 'What is going on' lol I hope Netflix won't do us wrong as always (they cut the budget on most shows after the 2nd season) I'm waiting the next season!!!! It will be the queer season with Benedict!
