Look, I am willing to guess that the majority of you are guitarists. That's more than fair, given how much of this channel is dedicated to guitar, but it's high time we go low.
Yeesh, that was a bad joke. But whatever I love playing bass. I'm willing to go as far as to say that it was my first love as a musician. So let's talk about what you need to get started writing, playing, and performing on bass. Do you need hardware? Not necessarily. Do you even need a bass? The answer to that one might surprise you. I can only say one thing with absolute confidence here; the Origin BASSRIG pedals sound absolutely phenomenal.

Really looking forward to part 2. Was literally going to comment that I wished you went into the writing aspect so thanks for that at the end. I appreciate what you do man we're all just kinda stumbling our way around with this full band production stuff so all insight from guys with dope mixes is appreciated.

I got away from playing music for years and returned to it about a year ago. I never realized how important it was for my mental health. Your videos have helped a great deal as far as being deep on the details of dialing sounds in. Additionally, I'm grateful for the lack of surfacy BS on your channel. It stands alone brother! I've been struggling to get the level of clarity I want to hear with regard to recording bass tracks. This one has shone a light in some previously murky territories. Thanks for all your efforts! They are truly greatly appreciated.

Great video! As a bassist, I’m super intrigued by your approach to the instrument. Your bass lines are always so tasteful and interesting. Can’t wait to hear about you process for writing bass parts.

I’m sure I’ll do a video on writing parts at some point but the long and short of it is basically “take everything I know about playing minor pentatonic leads and then just apply that to pretending I am Hunter Burgan”

Hey!! I’m late … but I just got the bassrig ‘64 BP … and if you run it straight into a guitar cab IR with the blend maxed out … you get a beautiful analog recreation of a Bassman head and it sounds beautiful on guitar. SO versatile !!!

Incredibly well rounded run through for bass!! The super vintage is awesome as well as the EAE od. You’ve definitely put both on my radar! Love the thorough long format as always! Sounds like our bass and gtr journeys are very similar ( practically identical and in what we describe ourselves as and the pure joy of playing bass) I feel like if you really cut your teeth on bass then you’ll always be a bass player, even if gtr is your focus.

Very relatable. As someone who has predominately played guitar but wanted to get more into bass, I found the equipment landscape remarkably foreign. I wound up going with the Aguilar AG 700 bass amp head that Sean Hurley uses in some videos. I recorded an album with it, and recently played my first gig with it, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s also super light, which makes my band’s guitarists jealous. I know it’s not a pedal, and it’s double the price of the BassRig, but I’m happy I found it-I just wish the bass equipment landscape were easier to navigate, easier to find the corner I want to gravitate toward.

Love the Origin pedals but I've ended up picking the Jad Freer Capo instead. Currently using DG Hyper luminal > EAE Longsword > Capo > EAE Model FeT and it's absolutely monstrous.

If you want the classic SVT or Portaflex tone get the Ampeg SCR DI. It’s half the price and it’s actually an Ampeg pedal that nails these amps and includes their Scrambler pedal as well. I used this pedal touring with the Motown group The Miracles to get that Jamerson tone and in tons of studio sessions. Been doing this 50 years and this pedal is the best IMHO at getting an actual Ampeg tone. I have played the Bass Rig and it’s great but not spot on. Doing any high end recording for any length of time with both pedals and you’ll start to see what I mean. Of course if you prefer the Bass Rig tone flexibility, which many do, then go for it. But for an Ampeg tone there is a cheaper and in my opinion better option.

Hi Mark, did you notice any low-end loss on the DI of the Bassrig super vintage, compared to the Amp out? The low-end loss on the DI of the black panel is pretty massive unfortunately :( As much as it was the best amp in a box tone I ever played, not being able to remove the cab sim and use as a regular DI is a major design flaw IMO. I could live with it if the cab sim didn't have as much low-end loss. :(

Question: Did you have the body routed on that Fender Bass VI? Is that a Jazzmaster bridge pickup? Just curious what the deal was with that.
@markjohnstonofficial
@markjohnstonofficial Жыл бұрын
That’s how it came. This is the pawn shop bass vi from a now defunct fender line that was spec’d from the factory this way. Pro tip: I hate that pickup in this guitar. I basically live in positions 4 and 5 because of it.

How would you say the origin bass pedals go against the uad ampeg svt plugins? I love the tactile and response of moving knobs, but had a couple of the svt dudes included when I got an Apollo. (I'm not sure if this is addressed, about half way through the video).
