Andy has been extensively testing the Wychwood Drift XL 9' 6" 3# fly rod, which extends out to over 10' thanks to its ingenious extending butt section! Possibly the best dry fly rod at it's price, but will the Drift XL also make a great budget euro nymphing rod? The potential cure for carrying too much kit, the Drift XL could be the answer to the questions "what is the best fly rod for fishing rivers?" and "what is the best fly rod for beginners".

Great video as alway. Have the exact same rod and I love it. The only thing I would do to improve it would be to add section alignment markers. Just makes set up that little bit easier.

Great review Andy - very fair and comprehensive. Interesting concept well executed. I think they should follow your advice and move that ring down. Absolutely brilliant for someone just starting out.

Hi Andy, that's such a coincidence, my Drift XL 9'6" #3 arrived late this afternoon. I'll be giving it it's first outing on Thursday. My one comment on it, before I fish with it, is I wish there was a "keeper eye/ring". It could have replaced the 20cm whipping at no extra cost and been more useful to many. Just a detail point and won't detract from how the rod fishes. Great review, if a fraction late for me! 😊

Hi nick, let us know how you get on with the rod! They couldn't put a keeper that far up the blank as both fly line but more specifically mono/braid euro leaders would get caught around it all the time. This is the one instance where I understand why there isn't one on there!

Useful review, thanks for that. I’ve been using the 11ft #3 Drift as my winter nymphing rod for the past few years and I wondered how well the telescopic function of the XL worked. Like the way you change the edition of Fly Culture as each new edition comes out, some good content in that one...😊

Got myself The Drift XL in 4 wt not fished with it yet, Need to go to fishing shop Saturday and pick up some gear then out sunday cant wait :)

I mind you done a rod review a while back on the nymphmaniac #3 10ft rod.. what rod would you recommend out of the this one and the vision nymphmaniac? IB liked the vision i think, I'm sure you did too Andy. And what reel and line would you recommend as well to go with a #3 rod? Would you go a line size up or stick with a #3?

Having watched the video I have followed the link and splashed out on the 9'6'' 3#. I have been doing quite a lot of dry fly river fishing with a cheap 7' 4# which I have found almost useless for euro nymphing and limited for catapulting. I was thinking of getting something for that purpose and this looks like the solution at a price I can justify. Thank you.

Nice review Andy. I've always looked at rods with extension pieces and wondered if they're really worth getting, worried about dropping or snapping the extension piece as I've seen it happen to a few people but I do like the idea of it being built in and really quick to adjust. 🤔

It's a rod I've been contemplating getting for dry fly and spider fishing. The other in the running is the Guideline LPS at 9' 9" it's a sort of compromise between the Wychwood options. Love the River & Stream reels. I do prefer the setup to be slightly tip heavy.

I must admit I don't know the guideline rod at all, this thing at £150 is a really good option though!

Enjoyed this review, but personally couldn't see myself enjoying the style of fishing that goes with such tools. Give me some split cane and silk, especially for dry fly fishing - if you're a keen angler & you've never tried river fishing with cane, or even just silk, then I would heartily recommend you do so.
