My personal favorite method of reduced voltage starting. Unfortunately electricians never understand the motor wiring and I had one attempt to bump a WD yesterday and welded 1M and 1S. They had wired the motor as if 1M and 2M ran in parallel so boom goes the panel!

Where is this still used? All the videos and comments I find are about teaching this in school while I can't find any real world applications.

You'll typically find this in larger motor applications that aren't VFD's.

@@RussellKasem Typically where? Where are large motor applications without VFDs? Someone pointed out large fire pumps to me; so far that's the only application I can find still on the market.

They are very uncommon, especially for new installations.
