For stuff like the veins, you could also use a good quality colored pencil with a sharp tip. The high quality ones are very soft as to not tear your paint and they give a lot of color. Just apply a coat of varnish and it wont rub off. A lot of people dont realise that even pencils can be usefull while painting models. Pencils are also great for helping you freehand very delicate and small designs

@@franciscoalejandro7567 Not started on them yet but following this tutorial and adding tentacles from pipe cleaners coated in acrylic sealant seems a good bet. Everything has to be easy to copy so cheap materials and simple techniques so the youngster can see how it was done and have a go (that way when they grow up and become early adopters I'll get all my 'last season' stuff cheap!)

Many years ago, I made a death-kiss from a ping-pong ball. For the tentacles, I used string soaked in white glue to give them some stiffness. For the center eye, I used a marble. The body texture was DAS clay. Just another way of doing almost the same thing.

Lovely project! Great result! A helpful hint: Adding the base at the end of the building phase will result in a better join (no paint in the way) and an easier painting process (you have a good way of holding on to the miniature). You can protect your transparent base with tape or masking fluid during the painting process if you want.

I've figured out that comb teeth also work very well in place of toothpicks. They're roughly the same shape and size, and they're less likely to crack or leave splinters than wooden toothpicks. Plus, you can get other types of combs with bigger/differently shaped teeth if you want a different look for your beholder.

Very nice. Will have to make a few of these. Maybe use this idea to make a few of the beholder kin as well. I made a beholder before. I used a Styrofoam ball for mine. Melted in the mouth, used my thumb to sink in an eye socket. Glass bead for an eye, and smaller ones for the smaller eyes. I used pipe cleaners covered in hot glue for the eye-stalks, which made them thicker than yours look. And I used twine soaked with glue to give him dreadlocks which help hide the wire that holds him. ... it ... to the base. Two inch metal washer for a base. Yeah, he's big. Great job..

Although I'm a maker not a gamer your tutorials are still incredibly inspiring. Your do-it-yourself approach is also inspiring, as from where I stand the whole GW shtick seems rather expensive and a little exploitative of the fans. Besides, creating is fun. Really cool build. Inspiration: When you were adding the brown over the beige on the belly, the build reminded me of some kind of fish monster. This build could easily be adapted as such, using the ping pong ball for the head and front body, and adding something to the back for the tail. Repeat the same hot glue body texture, working from head to tail and a similar color scheme as used on the blue beholder.

I've just built one of these although I used a mixture of Miliput and greenstuff to sculpt part of the face and the tentacles ( I'm not great with hot glue I'm a guitar player so I want to avoid burning my fingers). I also used a large half pearl bead for the eye it sticks out more ad looks like an eye just the horns and teeth to do which I will complete tomorrow Then Sunday morning I will paint it and mount it on a stand

Marvellously inexpensive & speedy solution. Great work & a fantastic tutorial. May try sculpting my own some day (with a no knives version). It'd take me a few days but this is how I'd do it... I would use tinfoil to get the basic shape, insert & glue the wire stocks in place (using calendar wire from a ring binder), sculpt a layer of milliput (so I could get the scales, texture) Then make the teeth out of a sheet of acetate & apply miliput to either side to secure & bulk. I'd likely use beads too for the eye stalks. Use green stuff putty (kneaditite) to create finer details (bulging veins, wrinkles, etc..). For the basing & such, I'd use all your techniques as they're the most efficient & cost effective

Might look better if you add one of the glass "drop" marbles that a lot of craft stores and, at least, Dollar Tree tends to have in their craft section, for the main eye, using glue to work it into the main body rather than just the surface of the ball for it. Another thing that might improve the end look slightly is to get some of the gloss, clear mod podge and put a bit out to thicken to more of a slurry level or some of the crystal clear tacky glue, and put it over the teeth after you mount the mini on it's base, put more than necessary for the teeth and mouth to get the wet look, the little bit of dripping as drool would be interesting looking.
