When you work at a world class level and with the kind of intensity professionals like Wynton bring to his music, you are entitled to feel burnt out. He has done an incredible job as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Their orchestra never disappoints.

That bass player spoke on music as much as he spoke on life

Look, I appreciate the spirit behind the musical backgrounds you're adding over the discussion, but I would recommend against continuing that practice. You can't just slap music on the audio track like this and expect that it becomes anything but a detraction and a distraction. It's not helping; it's in the way. I would like it better if I didn't have to work so hard to hear the message these folks are trying to share, and I dare say that to ANY musician it's going to be this way because we have spent our lives teaching our ears to listen deeply to good music.

what if you have some good jazz in the background when having sex? does it make you bad in bed too?

Gotta love the Mr. Rogers-ish pianism during the beginning. "I'm so pleased to visit with you today! Why don't we feed the fish together?"

Me too. Played in some big clubs, then a career, including U.S.A.F. that had something that had to do with anything but playing music for my patients. Now I play for my dog. Midlife crisis=muscle cars and women half my age.

I really love how they're focusing on people rather than music. To me playing jazz is all about embracing and accepting the people in your group and life outside the group

Nice dialogue. It's so weird being a jazz musician, being able to see your progress can be impossible especially with how easy it is to be neurotic about it and attatching your value to it. When other people recognize your growth it can seem so weird. I play with a violinist, and he mentioned how my improvement has inspired him to get better. But Never have I ever thought I've gotten to a point of that recognition

Back in the day, playing even local gigs payed a Middle Class Wage. As a musician, you made more than regular workers and could afford the cost of living. Today, gig wages haven’t kept up with inflation. Gigs want to pay what they paid 30 years ago. Love of music is great. Struggling to survive, not so much. Try and get gigs that pay into the AFM Pension Fund. Really valuable in the end. Wynton seems like a humble guy:)

BAND LEADER Wynton says, #1 "you gotta have gigs" lol 2. Pay your people on time yes lol 3. Don't lead like you know it all and you can't expect people to follow you like puppets.....something like that .......and be vulnerable. Great stuff! and so so right Another thing I would add, you probablly should have been born in Louisiana where there were always a lot of gigs.

This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing. I am studying alto saxophone and love jazz. I plan to share this not only with the musicians in my family but with others who have challenges in life, as we all do. I have just one suggestion, and that is to correct the spelling of the word: “quitting” in the video title. There are two “t”s in the word, not one. Thank you again.

Wynton couldn’t QUIT PLAYING if his LIFE DEPENDED on it. He once told me that if he ever stopped, HE WOULD DIE. 😮 Yeah, Without BEING SEEN, he'd be a NOBODY. The horn makes him SOMEBODY. He is just as HALLOW & SHALLOW as other CELEBRITY HUMANS who believe themselves to be SUPERIOR to others because THEY can ENTERTAIN or make NOISES with a PIECE of METAL. I PITY THEM ALL. 🙏🏼 GStazzy, He also HATES MILES with a PASSION. He's as TEMPERAMENTAL as a 4 year old. FACT not fiction. Thanks
