Wyze Pan Cam Infrared Conversion and teardown

Converting my Wyze Pan cam to remove the infrared pass filter when the daytime camera is enabled.

Awesome! Nice work, man. I really appreciate how you took the time to go over everything rather than just instructions for the modification. I picked one of these up at a thrift store for $5 - had no idea what the USB "in" was for until now. Understanding all of this really inspires me to try some other modifications. I agree with you, the gaskets and dust filters really are nice and make it a bit more outdoor resistant. As for the mic... they rushed that thing out to market on a deadline that they were well past is my guess. Another boon as far as I'm concerned. I don't need any extra smart devices with a mic. Not if it has wifi. A lens I can point where I need it to be. :)

This teardown helped me figure out how to clean the glass on the inside so that my camera, which I have mounted outside, works at night again without the image being foggy and grey. Thanks!

What glass can did you end up cleaning can you put a time stamp from the video as a reference please. Although my camera is on the inside of the window point towards the street and but it also had gotten fuxxy and distorted

@@mynameis.....9179 you can clean the lens, but you can also remove the lens and clean inside of it. If you remove the lens be sure to put power to it, and check focus in the app before reassembly

you should put a visible light filter on it to block out the visible light. I played with IR photography a while back, Interesting effects.

Thanks for your interest Andrew! I just posted a timelapse from the camera as well. Check it out and let me know what you think. I'll be installing some visible light filters soon that should give it a really cool look as well!

This tear down helped me, figure out if I could add a telephoto lens to it. It looks like a normal 12 mm ? Lens assembly (Amazon purchase). I’m still researching. Thanks

yeah, that shouldn't be a problem as long as the threads are the same. you may have to make a hole in the front if the lens is longer

Hello! I’ve noticed that you had a issue with the motor turning in a gritty way in it’s X-Axis. Unfortunately, I’ve got a Pan Cam V2 and it came with this defect. May I know how you were able to fix it? I’ve opened it up but couldn’t find the issue. Thanks in advance :)

My V2 did the same thing, and it stopped connecting to wifi too. I even tried swapping motors with the V1. It must be an issue with the board.

@@vinnysdiyworkshop9534 Appreciate the reply dude! Hm I'm waiting for my replacement motor to arrive actually and the model for the X-Axis stepper motor is "24byj48 dc 5v" in case you're wondering. Hope it'll help you out in fixing your Cam Pan ^^

Awesome video! How does this conversion affect the night vision capabilities of the camera?

It's basically the same, but in color instead of black and white. I have this camera outside and in a weather resistant dome, so I don't use the IR Led's on the camera. When I switch to "night mode" in the app, it's really going back to daytime mode, putting the filter in front of the lens, and then the software turns the image to black and white. So it's an always on infrared camera. If you need extra light at night, you could use an external IR spotlight.

I've seen this done many times on very early dslr cameras, but what exactly is the benefit o doing this?

It enabled you to view the infrared light spectrum. You can use it for monitoring vegetation health, or just better night time viewing.

Mostly it's just for interesting imagery. But, it can have uses such as helping in identifying vegetation health.

@@TalOrmanda the colors if the vegetation if directly correlated to their thermal reflectivity and can be used to measure general moisture content, and the overall health of the tree.

@@zachary4225 interesting, how did that happen? You can just under them and install new IR less for a few bucks on Amazon. Or forget them and buy a big IR spot or flood light.
