The X-56A is an unmanned multiple use technology demonstrator designed to test active flutter suppression and gust load alleviation incorporating advanced control technology. The technologies demonstrated by the X-56A are vital to the successful development of the slender, lightweight, high-aspect-ratio wings that could be used by future transports and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance UASs to increase aircraft performance and lower the vehicle fly away and operating costs.

Like "The Right Stuff" intro. Interesting stuff for sure. I've encountered flutter with my rc wings. Small scale resolution was to minimize unwanted control surface micro movements.

Everything X applies to all aircraft and spacecraft. NASA launch, reentry, and orbital/suborbital craft. Like the X15 tests. The Militaries' job from the Wright Brothers on is to use the results to provide air/space superiority from which weapons delivery, recon, transport are done undetected with more fuel efficient engines on a stable platform. Flutter, I believe, makes the craft light up radar while probably destroying craft, crew and cargo without engaging the enemy. How about a more fuel efficient spy plane/drone. It can re-position itself more quickly than satellites, stay up longer than other drones without endangering humans, etc. Recon was the first use of aircraft in WW I. Just a guess.

None of my modell wings does make such problems even in steep nosedives and in harsh abuse against all specifications. With a progressiv backward sweep in the wing reducing the lift to the tips and some fences this effect should not occur, even if the outer steering surfaces can be trimmed to reduce torsion and the rapid change in load between profil momentum and the constructiv downforce, if no S - shaped profil is used. That shall be calculated without any further .....
@Mishn0

That's because you've made the wings strong enough to not flutter. You could reduce weight and drag by making them thinner, but then you'd get flutter. That's the purpose of this program. Making the wings so light that they would always suffer from flutter unless it was actively damped.

Sensors detect the flutter, computers analyze it and determine how to move the control surfaces to damp it. It's the same thing that advanced ground based telescopes use to actively shape their mirrors to counter atmospheric distortion of the light they're gathering. Also similar, but much more complicated than the knock sensor in your car's engine that prevents damage from pre-ignition by altering the timing when the onset of spark knock is detected. Sensors detect a problem and a computer program instructs something to counter the problem.

An unnecessary Lockheed-Martin advertisement aimed at those who are juvenile enough to think that equipment intended to spy on and kill people is cool. It ain't. It is overpriced, largely unnecessary and uncivilized.
